Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KUMA KAwAGUcHI, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Yolk city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp Shades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a lamp shade. and has for its chief characteristic the provision of a shade made up of adjustable sections which may be moved with respect to the globe to deflect the light rays in any desired direction, and the shade sections held in any given position.
Another object oi? the invention resides in the provision of a shade of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, to facilitate the adjustment of the shade sections and one which can be readily and asily associated with orremoved from the globe as the OOfilSlOIl requires.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the "following detail description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrai'igement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure l is a view in elevation of a lamp shade forming the subject matter of the invention, and showing the normal position of parts.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the shade sections in an adjusted position.
Figure 8 is a view showing another position of the shade sections.
Figure 4: is a view showing another man ner of arranging the shade sections.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates a plate which may be in the form of a reflector, having a central opening 11 from the edge of which rises an annular flange 12. This flange is provided with a plurality of screws or other suitable fastening elements 13 :for holding the plate associated with the globe 14, through the instrumentality of the globe attaching member or socket A. The shade together with its supporting and adjusting means PATENT UFFICE.

is associated with the plate 10 in a manner to be hereinafter described.
The shade is made up of two identically constructed sections 1.5 and 16 respectively, which are hinged together as at 17 to provlde for adjustment of the sections toward and away from each other. The shade is suspended from a shade support 18 of somewhat similar construction as the plate 10, through the instrumentality of chains or other flexible elements 19 which have their corresponding terminals secured to the shade support 18 at diametrically opposite points. The opposite terminals of the flexible elements are secured to the respective shadesections as shown. Theshade support 18 is provided with a central opening to receive the globe attaching member or lamp socket A, and is arranged directly beneath the plate or reflector 10. Suspended from diametrically opposite points of the shade support 18, are chains 22 arranged in right angular relation with respect to the chains 19, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4: respectively, the chains 22 being utilized in holding the shade sections in any given position. For this purpose, each shade section is provided with a hook like element 23 adapted to engage with any one of the links of the respective chains 22. It desired, each of the chains 22 may be provided with a bell or other suitable ornament 24L. Manifestly, the sections 15 and 16 oi"- the shade can be adjusted indepei'idently or moved toward and away from each other to deflect the light rays in the desired direction, when the sections are held in given position by engaging the chains 22 to hook like elements 23. The shade proper may be constructed from any suitable material, and may also vary in design without departing from the spirit of the invention.
While it is believed-that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall. within the scope otwhat is claimed.
What I claim is The combination with an electric light bulb and an attaching member therefor, of a shade'supporting membersupported by said attaching member, chains suspended from said supporting member, a shade insection intermediate of its ends and slightly eluding companion sections pivotally conadjacent the upper edge thereof, and being 10 nected together at their lower ends, and atarranged to lie in path of the links of the tached to tWo of said chains adjacent the remaining chains to engage with any given pivot points, said sections being susceptible link whereby said shade may be supported to movement toward and away from each in a given position.
other, or as a unit wholly to one side of said In testimony whereof I afiix my si ature. bulb, ahook like element secured to each KUMA KAWAG CHI.
