The cable 38 is conducted around one of the sheaves in onelof the blocks 28. thence across the .jdeck and around one "lot" the lie sheaves in the other block 28, thence along the deck and around one of the sheaves in the block 30, thence around the sheave 36 on the boom 14, thence around the other sheave of the block and thence to the cleat 37. v
The other cable 39 is conducted around one of the sheaves of the other blockQS, thence around the other sheave in the other bloclr28 and thencealong the deckfand around the sheaves in the corresponding sheave 29 and guide sheave on the boom l l at the other side of the vessehas shown, and finally attached to the cleat 3'7.
By this arrangement the cables may be adjusted to allow the sails 15 and 16 any desired amount of play according to the velocity and direction of the wind. When employed on a two'or more masted vessel, the cables 38 and 39 are simply extended in the same manner through a series of the sheaves, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. By this arrangement when the steersman desires to tack or turn'about, he shifts the rudder to bring the vessel intothe wind, and when the latter has turned'far enough to expose the opposite sides of the sails to'the wind, the pressure of the wind on the main sailswill throw them over and carry'the jib sail with them through the; action of the coupling cables 38 and 39, as Will be obvious, and without the necessity for manipulating themseparately, and thus automatically set cables the sails'to correspond with the change of direction.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any'modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In a sailing vessel including a jib sail and masts carrying booms and-'mainsails, of a plurality of guide sheaves attached to the vessel along its opposite sides and spaced to correspond to the mainsails, a guide sheave attached. to each of said booms, attached at one end to said jib sail, means for guiding said cables from the jib sail rl-spectively to the foremost guide sheaves of the vessel at opposite sides thereof, said cables being thence carried" alternately around the sheaves of the vessel and the sheaves of the booms, whereby the shifting oi the mailsails will correspondingly shift the jib sail.
