IMPRQVEMENT IN BALE-TIES..
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,803, dated September 16,1873; application filed May 16, 1873. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MGMURTRY,of Lexington, county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making Ties for Baling Gotton, Hemp, Ste.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and making a part of this specification.
The letters of reference in the severaliigures represent like parts.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in cotton-bale ties; and it consists in cutting in the side of each end of the metal loop or tie a square notch, and upon eachside of this notch a right-angular cut is made, so as form a downwardly-projecting ilap, so that when the two ends are brought together the ends of the tie and the flaps will all come on the under side next to the cotton, hemp, or other material, so as to be entirely out of the way.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
A B represent the two ends of a common metal tie used in baling cotton, hemp, and other material, each of which have a square notch, d, cut in them. Upon each side ot' this notch a right-angular cut is made, so as to form the flaps c.
When these two ends are brought side or edge wise together, so that the notches and cuts will catch in each other, the two ends of the tie and the downwardlyprojecting flaps will all come upon the under side next to the bale, so that not a single end or projecting corner will come upon top to be exposed to injury, as shown in the last figure.
When these ends or corners do come upon the top they cause both annoyance and loss in stowing the bales away in the holds of vessels by catching in the bagging of other bales or against the beams of the vessel. My invention is intended to overcome these objections.
