HOWARD F. ROBINS, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
PIPE wnnncrr.
Application filed June 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD F. RoBINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe WVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to produce a pipe-wrench simple in construction, easily and quickly adjusted to different sizes of pipe, and especially adapted for working in close places, such as the pipes of steam radiators and the like.
The invention is fully disclosed in the description and claims following, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a section of the same central to the handle and adjusting nut. Fig. 3 is a section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking down.
In the drawing the numeral 1 denotes the handle of the wrench, having an expanded head cored at 2 to receive a sliding-jaw shank 4, which is suitably threaded for a nut 5 seated in a mortise 6 in the handle. The shank forms a part of the movable j aw, which has a serrated head 7. The nut is preferably hexagonal, as shown, so that a wrench may be applied to tighten or loosen it, should occasion demand. In a lateral seat 8 is pivoted the outer jaw 9, whose Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1922.
1921.. Serial No. I76,927.
curved working face is serrated as shown. This j aw rocks on its pivot 10 to disengage from the pipe, its movement in this direction being limited by atail-piece 11.
The wrench is used in the same manner as pipe-wrenches in general, but its peculiar and compact form of working head permits it to be introduced and operated in very narrow places. This is sometimes very desirable, as where pipes are set closely together, in radiators, for example, or are close to walls, in corners, or otherwise almost in accessible. It is to be noted also that the wrench has a large range of adjustability, as will be seen by a comparison of the pipes represented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A pipe wrench comprising a handle with an expanded head cored to receive the shank of a movable jaw, a jaw having a threaded shank movable endwise of the handle in said core, an adjusting nut therefor mounted in a mortise in said head, and an outer jaw having an inwardly serrated, crescentshaped working portion, and a shank pivoted to the lateral expansion of the head, to rock thereon, the perimeter of the jaw to its junction with the head being without any external projections to obstruct reciprocating movement of the wrench in close places.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD F. ROBINS.
