Beit known that I, DioNIsio ARTAMENDI, aV subject of the King of Spain,` residing at Barcelona, Spain, have inventedcertain new and 'useful Improvements in Automatic Pistols, (for which I have filed applications for patents in Spain on March 25, 1916, August l, 1918, and July 10, 1919; in Belgium on April 17, 1917, and June 7, 1919; in Germany on April 13, 1917, and in italy on June 26, 1919;) andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to automatic pistols and more especially to the type of automatic pistols provided with a hammer which at themoment of firing strikes the cartridge either directly or by means of a firing pin.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved automatic pistol having greater safety properties than those heretofore known and in which the firing canonly occur when the operator grasps the firearm to tire, thus avoiding any possibility of involuntary firing.
Another object ot this invention is to fur nish an automatic pistol which stays automatically in safety at the moment in which the cartridge magazine is drawn aside, thus avoiding the possibility of iiring of the cartridge occupying the barrel, when the cartridge magazine is drawn aside.
My invention consists essentially in pro viding the rear part of the head of the hammer with a tooth or hook and in combining the rear partfof the grip of the pistol-with a grip or pressure lever pivotally mounted at the lower` part of the grip, and being at its upper part provided with a hook which can catch andY hold the tooth'of the head of the hammer. This grip lever is moved in one direction by aV spring which keeps it nor mally in the position which holds the hammer, thus preventing the accidental firing of the irearm. The grip lever extends rearwardly oil the rear part of the grip ol the firearm, to such position, that lwhen the operator grasps the firearm for firing, he exerts pressure upon the grip lever and releases the hammer.
Besides, the invention consists in arranging at one side of the grip of the arm, an oscillating lever adaptedto engage the cartridge magazine in such a manner that when the magazine is'in itsV place, this oscillating lever allows the free operation of the firearm` but when the magazine is drawn aside, the lever oscillates and prevents the operation 'of the trigger and o1 the grip lever;
The invention will be explained by the following detailed descriptionA with reference to the accompanying drawing in'which lFigure 1 isa longitudinal sectional view pi an automatic pistol embodying my invenion.
Figure 2 is a similar view-of 'another embodiment of the invention.`
ln F ig. 1 my invention is shown as incorporated in a pistol of the well known type, in which the reaction spring is disposed around the barrel. In this ligure, 1 represents the breech slide and 2 the barrel, upon which is coiled the reaction spring 7,' kwhich at its rear end bears on the shoulder 8 ofthe barrel and at its iront end bears upon the collar 3 concentric to the barrel. This collar 3 Vis' fixed to the end of thebreech-slide 1, in the well known manner, by a bayonet locking joint includingthe teeth 5, which coopcrate with the circular groove 6 of the breech slide, its position being determined by the flange l oi' the sleeve and the corresponding shoulder of the breech-slide.
Figure 2 shows an embodiment of the invention in a pistol of the well known type inl which the reaction springis disposed beneath the barrel. In thisl figure, 31 is the breech-slide, 32 the barrel and 37 is the reaction spring, which is disposed around the 'bolt 3S and bears at its forward end upon the breech-slide 31 and at its rear end upon the head of the bolt 38.
Both the form oi construction of the Figure 1 and that of the Figure 2 are'provided, in a well known manner, withthe usual safety device 20 which renders` the trigger 19 inactive.
My invention consists in providing these pistols with an automatic safety deviceconstituted by a pressure or grip lever 21, disposed in the rear part of the grip of the firearm. This lever hasl its lower end pivotally mounted on a pin 22, and carries at its upper part a tooth 26, bearing on the frame27of the pistol to limit the rearward movement ofthe grip lever and to determineitsnormal position. The grip lever 21, is actuated by the same spring which actuates, in a well known manner, the impeller 23 of the ham-- mer 24. This spring is not shown in the drawing iii order to simplify the latter. This spring operates upon the downwardly exl The grip lever 21 also carries a forwardly` extendingahutment 17 adapted to cooperate with the oscillating lever 10. This lever can oscillate around a pin 11 and is moved in one direction by a helical spring 18, which engages its lower end.
The upper end 14 of the lever 10 is arranged in close proximity to the rear end of the connector 15, and the lever 10 has an arm 12 arranged near its upper end, which due to the act-ion of the spring 18, bears upon the cartridge-magazine 13. The frame ot the pistol has a recess 16 in which the abutment 17 travels, the end of this abutment terminating close to the lever 10.-
The spring 18 pushes the lower end of the lever 10 and causes the arm 12 to engage the cartridge-magazine 13. When. the cai'- tridge-magazine is placed in the pistol, as shown inthe drawing, the arm 12 of thev lever 10 is engaged by the cartridge-magazine 13 and this causes the upper end of the lever 10 to move out of the path of movement of the connector 15 and of the abutment 17 of the lever 21, so that on grasping the pistol the grip lever 21 can be moved forwardly so as to unhook the hammer 24: thus permitting firing when the trigger 19 ispressed by the linger ot the operator.
On the contrary, i'the cartridge-magazine 13 isdrawn aside, the arm 12 of the lever 10 loses its support, and the lever 10 oscillates owing to theaction et" the springA 18. and then the body ofthe lever 1() is brought to a position in front of the abutment 17 of the lever 21, so that evenwhen the pistol is grasped, it is impossible to oscillate the grip lever 21 to unhoolr-the'hammer 24 and, therefore, the firearm cannot be fired. At the same time, the end 14 of the lever 1() is 'brought into a position in the path of movement of the connector 15, thus preventing the-movement of the connector and therefore of the trigger 19.V Y Y Thus when the cartridge-magazine 13 is drawn aside, any firing of the pistol is absolutely prevented because the trigger can not be actuated and on the other hand, even in the case of it being possible to actuate theV trigger 19, the Vgrip ,lever 21 is locked, and
therefore the hammer 2a would remain withheld by the hook 28 and prevent firing.
From the description oi: this invention, it will be understood that with this device, absolute saiiety oi? autom atie pistols is obtained, and" the mechanism prevents at all times an unvoluntary liring of the pistol, because the firearm stays automatically in safety when the cartridge-magazine is drawn aside 0r when the'operator ceases to exert pressure on the grip.
Although I have described a preferable and convenient form of my invention, it will be understood that slight changes can be iiitrodueed without varying the character and the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims.
'1 claim:
1. In an automatic pistol of the class described, a grip lever pivoted in the rearv portion of the grip of the pistol and actuated by `the same spring that actuates the hammer,
in such manner that it projects normally from the grip, a. hook at the rear part of the head of lthe hammer, another hook at the upper end of said grip lever adapted to normally engage the hook ot the hammer and thus prevent iring while the grip lever is not grasped by the operator, a pivoted oscillating lever provided with an arm which bears upon the cartridge-magazine and is actuated by a spring which causes it to oscillate when the cartridge-magazine is drawn aside, a trigger connector, the oscillating levehaving its head arranged in close proximity to the end of' the connector in such Y manner that on drawing away the rartridgemagazine, the last mentioned lever oscillates and its head is interposed in the path of the connector, thus preventing the firing of the pistol.
