Another object is to provide a chain rpipe l wrench so formed and proportioned as to insure a powei'iiulgripping action upon the pipe when `the `operating handle of the ywrench is turned in either direction, the entire leverage oi the handle plusithe engaging head beingutilized to turn the pipe, while the tendency to rock the engaging head whilel the handle or `lever is under strain, only results in binding the chain in tighter `engagement `with the pipe, thuspreventing any' accidental slipping of the chain around the pipe. i i
A further object is to provide a wrench having a permanently attached chain which, after the Vengaging head is applied to `the pipe, may be easily passed around thev latter and quickly attached in operative position, whether the pipe be oi' maximum or minimum size,` the ready adjustability `of the chain aiding in easily detaching the wrench when the operation is completed. f

By manipulating-the head and the chain in, the opposite manner, the teeth at the heel end will suiiice to bind the chain for turning the pipe in the opposite direction. The head and *shoe which together forms the jaw for the i'v'rench, acts as an elliptical cani in tightening the chain, whichever way the Wrench is turned. It will be observed from Fig. l that the handle is offset from the head and shoe so as to give free use of the heel of the wrench upon the pipe.
In Figure 5 a reversible shoe 22 is shown, having teeth 23 on both faces thereof, and a central threaded aperture 24 for the reception of a fastening screw. In this form, the head is provided with atoothed seat for the reception of that set of teeth not in use, and the head of the screw is seated in a countersunlr seat in said head, and when one set of teeth becomes materially worn, it is only necessary to loosen the screw and reverse the shoe to present a new set of teeth for use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple, cheaply manufactured Wrench has been provided, consisting of few parts, so formed and associated, aseto produce a powerful gripping action upon the pipe or other object to be turned.
lVhat is claimed is l. In a chain pipe wrench, the combination of a head having curved oppositelydisposed pipe gripping faces on its underside extending from substantially the center thereof lengthwise toward each end, the rounded ends of the said gripping faces merging With the rounded ends of said head so as to provide symmetrical chain-bearing ends, a handle at one end of the head rising from that face of the head remote from the gripping face and offset from the adjacent chain bearing end, a chain, means for pivot-v ally attaching one end of said chain 'to the underside of the handle above the chainbearing end, and means for attaching the other end of said chain to the upper or outer side lof the head above the other chain-bearing end, whereby the head acts as an elliptical Cam causing the chain to wrap around either end of the head and the chain swing-` ing clear of the other end and being drawn more firmly around thepipe. y
2. In a pipe wrench, the combination of a head having rounded chain bearing ends, and curved oppositely disposed toothed pipe gripping surfaces on its under side, said toothed surfaces extending from the central part to each end and merging with the rounded chain bearing ends, a handle joined to the head at one end at a point above the chain bearing end, a chain having one end pivotally attached adjacent to but above the 'inner rounded end of the head, and means for attaching the chain to the opposite end of the head above the outer' chainbearing end, whereby the chain ivillwrap around either end of the head and at the Sametime will swing clear of the otherl end and be and its under side provided with a transverse recess inthe center, a handle joining one of the tapered upper faces and offset from the head, a shoe mounted upon the underside of the head, said shoe having oppositely disposed arcuate pipe gripping surfaces each side of its central part and rounded chain bearing ends, said central part having a recess on the under side and a shouldered rib on the upper side to engage the recess of the head, means for holding said shoe to the head, a chain pivotally attached adjacent to but above the handle end of head, and adjustable chain attaching means in relatively the same position on the opposite end of the head, whereby either end of the shoe may be used upon the pipe, the chain at one Vend swinging clear of the shoe vreaching round the pipe and being tightened by the action of the opposite end of the shoe and head againstit.
4. In a pipe wrench, comprising a head, handle and chain, a pipe gripping shoe on the underside of the head extending an equal distance from the center of the head'tovvard y each end, the underside of said shoe having pipe gripping teeth andbeing curved or arcuate cach way from the center so as to rock upon the pipe and to engage it from either end of the shoe, the handle of the wrench being so joined to the head as to give free action of either end of the shoe. a
chain having oneend fastened tothe handle end of the head and arranged to extend around each end of said shoe, and means for adjustably attaching thel other end of the chain to the opposite end of the head in the same relative position with regard to the shoe as at the fixed end, whereby vwhen either end `of the shoe is in contact with the pipe, the chain at `such end will swing clear of the shoe, while the chain at the other end will be carried away from the pipe and tightened by the cam or rocking effect ofthe shoe upon it. j Y
