LOOK.
iaiasei- To allwhom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs J. LANGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York,
haveinvented' certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is .a specification. 1
i y present invention relates to looks for swinging doors and the like.
The objects of the invention are to provide-a simple and substantial lock-structure which will be burglar proof and which will. be made up of but relatively few and sturdy parts not likely to get out of order andiully protected against being tampered These objects I have attained by a novel form of constructlon, combination and arrangement of parts, one, practical embodi- ,ment of which is disclosed in the accompanying drawings which are to be considered in conjunction with the following specification. The invention, however, is not limited to the particular construction disclosed, inas-. much as certainmodifications maybe re- .sorted to without departure from the true spirit of the invention, as will be apparent ,from the scope of the appended claims.
,Figure 1- inthe drawings referred to is a front elevation of the lock with portions .ofthe cover removed to show the interior construction. 5 v I Figure l is a detail sectional view taken on substantially the plane of line 1-1 of. Figure 1.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the look as taken on substantially the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1.-
Figure-8 is a partial side elevation illu trating particularly the knob or handle mechanism forreleasing the lock.
Figure 4; is a sectional view on substantially the plane of line 44 of Figure 3.
One of the important features of my invention is the bolt mechanism, which is of duplex construction, comprising a pair of cooperating j aws'5, .6 in the nature of levers, pivotally supported alongside each other on 8 and having notches 9, 10 instuds their opposed edges, at the free ends there-or to partially receive and slide over the head portion of a keeper 11. This keeper has a pointed or cam faced edge 12v to effect a spreading .orseparation of the bolts and shoulders 13 at the rear of the cams or in- Patented Mar. 28, 1922.
Application filed January 21, 1921. Serial No. 438,846.
clines behind which the notched portions of thebolts snap to secure the parts in locked positlon. To insure this interlocking engagement of the bolts with the keeper, Iprovi de spring means which maybe a piece of spring wire 14 of substantially U-shape as in Figure 1, having portions twisted beneath the heads otthe pivot studs 7, 8 and arms 15 engaged with the inner edges of thelevers at points in rear of the pivotal supports so as to spread the rear ends of the levers and hence force together the forward ends of the levers or a spring such as'shown at 14 Figure 3, may be used. The forward or looking ends of the levers are shown as centered and as limited in their closing movement by having their opposing edges arranged for abutting engagement as indicated at 16 (Figure 1). This engagement of the bolt levers also causes them to operate as closure means making, access to the look all the more difiicult.
To release the locking jaws from the keeper, I have shown a rollback 17 having angularly turned ends 18, 19 engaging over the outer edges of the bolt levers. This rollback is shown as pivotally supported at 20 at a point between the rearward ends of the levers and as operated in Figure 1, by
a lug 21 projecting from the inner end of .suchas indicated at 23 connected at its inner end with a rollback 24 similar to the first rolback andhaving lugs at its ends such as indicated at 25,26 to engage the edges of the bolt levers. In place or this key operated lock mechanism or in addition thereto I may provide a handle or knob mechanism,
for which reason I have indicated in the form shown in FigureB, a knob at 27 connected directly with the rollback 24, a second knob 27 being here provided for the outer rollback l7.
In order that the bolts or looking jaws may when desired be secured in their retracted and inoperative position, I have shown hold open mechanism (Figure l) in the form of a rotary element 29 carried by a stud or turn-button 30 and provided with cams or inclined shoulders 31 to engage over the studs or pins 32 on the levers. At the inner ends of these cam shoulders, that is, the ends nearest the center of pivotal support, I have indicated depressions or pockets 33 to catch and hold the pins 32 and hence to releasably secure the parts in the bolt retracted relation.
The parts described are preferably supported and housed by a casing such as I have indicated at 34, said casing having an end extension part 35 wholly or substantially entirely enclosing the projecting or locking ends of the pivoted bolts and provided with a slot 36- in the side thereof to receive the keeper 12. This housing of the projecting ends of the bolts prevents tan 1- pering with the same when the door is open and prevents the insertion of tools for spreading or releasing the bolts. The keeper is shown supported and carried by an angular base member 37 seated in a mortise in the edge of the door casing and the lock casing similarly is secured in a mortise cut in the edgeof the door. The extension 35 is shown as widened or brought out to the surface at the inside of the door so as to stand flush with the surface of the doorjamb when the door is closed. 7
In the second form of the invention I have shown how the outer door knob may be dogged by means of a slide 36 positioned to engage in a notch 37 provided in the outer rollback and actuated by a lever 38 connected at 39 with the push buttons 40, 41. Also in this form of the invention I have shown at 42 a cylinder lock having a rollback 43 at its inner end arranged to engage an e xtension 44 at the lower end of the inner rollback 24 which enables the lock to be operrated by a key in the hands of an authorized party.
What I claim is:

5. In a lock of the character described, cooperating pivotally operating bolt levers, a shouldered keeper adapted to enter between said bolt levers, rollbacks at opposite sides of the lock pivoted intermediate the bolt levers and having laterally extending actuating lugs at opposite ends of the same positioned to engage over the outer edges of the bolt levers, said rollbacks being independently operable to actuate the bolt levers and dogging means for securing the parts in desired relation.
6. In a lock of the character described, cooperating pivoted bolt levers, spring means for rocking the bolt levers in one direction and an operating rollback pivoted intermedi- 7 ate the bolt levers and having laterally ex- 115 tending actuating lugs at opposite ends of the same positioned to engage over the outer edges of the respective bolt levers at different points. 7 p
7 In a lock of the character described, 00- 12 operating pivotally operating bolt levers, a shouldered keeper adapted to enter between said bolt levers, rollbacks at opposite sides of the lock independently operable to actively engage the bolt levers and means for 2 dogging one of said rollbacks.
