UNITED STATES PATENT 7 OFFICE:
THOMAS E. WEBB, OF SHORTSVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO PAPEG MACHINE COMPANY, OF SHORTSVILLE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
v SHREDDER KNIFE FOR ENSILAGE CUTTER/S,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 10, 1916. Serial No. 102,886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I. THonAs E. \VEBB, a citizen of the United States. residing at Shortsville, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shredder Knives for Ensilage Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and. useful improvements in shredder knives adapted to be used in connection with ensilage cutters in which a cutting wheel is provided upon one face with a series of knife supports on which are adapted to be arranged tangentially shredderknives forshredding material fed to said knives.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a shredder knife in which the beveled cutting edge thereof is serrated, the portion between the teeth formed by said Serra tion being formed on curved lines in order to prevent the material from .wedging between th teeth of said knives, and to increase the strength so as to prevent the teeth from being broken off when the knives are in operation.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.
I11 the drawings,
Figure l is a plan view of a shredder knife having a straight and oblique cutting edge.
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several .tignres ofthc drawing.
My improved shredder knife is adapted to be used in connection with knife supports for cutting wheels as shown in the application of F. J. Bullock filed April 5, 1916. N 0. 89,145 and patented Aug. 7, 1917, 1,236,259 in which a series of shredding knives are adapted to be arranged tangentially in one face of the cutting wheel. so that the material fed to said shredder knives will be thoroughly shredded.
which. the bolts tion of said cutting edge bein In the form of a shredder knife as shown in Figs. 1 having the usual bolt openings 2 through are adapted to pass for mounting the same on the cutting wheel. One edge of the knife is formed with a straight beveled portion 8 terminating in an oblique beveled portion 4, the beveled edgesthus formed being notched or serrated to form teeth 5, the bottom of the notches being formed of curved lines as shown at 6 so as to provide a knife with aseries of teeth emerging into one another by curved lines which increases the strength of the knife thus formed and prevents the teeth from becoming choked when the cutting knife is in operation. By constructing a knife with an end portion arranged at an angle to the other portion when the knife is in position on a rotary cutting wheel. the angle portion which travels in a small circle cuts and shreds the fodder thoroughly.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a shredder knife to be used in connection with an ensilage cutter employing a rotary cutter wheel in the form of a disk upon one face of which is adapted to be tangentially arranged a series of shredder knives which are adjusted at the proper angle so that material fed to the same is thoroughly shredded.
I claim:
A shredder knife for rotary ensilage cutters comprising aflat substantially oblong body having a beveled cutting edge on one edge, said beveled edge being serrated to form a series of Spaced teeth, the notches between the teeth terminating short of the bevel thereof. the portion between the teeth being formed on curved lines, the inner pora rra nge d at an angle to the other portion thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS E. WEBB.
lVi tn esses W. H. PRESTON, F. J. BULLOCK.
