GAS PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. '2, 1922.
Application filed April 26, 1920. Serial No. 376,435. I I.
To all whom it may concern: 7
'Be it known that I, CHARLES A. KIRK- wooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion.
l y invention relates to stoves or heaters that use gas for fuel, and particularly to improvements in stoves or heaters popularly known as gas-plates.
The objects of my invention are to increase the efficiency of such a plate or heater, and to improve the construction thereof so that not only will it be more durable but it will be cheaper to manufacture and more economical to operate. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a plan view-of a embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on dotlted line 3, 3, Figure 1, drawn to a larger sea e.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section of one end portion ofsaidplate taken on dotted'line 4, 4, Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a vertical section taken on dotted line 5, 5, Figure 1, drawn'to alarger scale. 7 V
Figure 6 is a horizontal section of a fragment of the plate taken on dotted line 6, 6, Figure 5, showing the *base plate broken away.
Figure 7 is a similar section taken 0 dotted line 7, 7, Figure 5.
Figures 8 and 9 are views showing isolated details the spreader support and mixing plate, respectively.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an oblong sheet metal top, the ends of which are rounded and struck from a center midway between its sides, and together therewith has its edges flanged downwards. This top is provided with two circular openings (6, a, the circumferences of which are struck from the same center as the ends of the top, and these openings have the margins thereof flanged downwards, and formed into a rabbeted seat B for the outer circular rim of the gas-plates C. and D, respectively.
The top A is supported by four legs E, E, two of which are located at each end. Le 's E, consist of flat bar-metal, which near their gas-plate upper ends are bent inwardly as at b, andhavc their upper offset portions c extend up inside the downwardly flanged edge of said top, and have their upper ends a bent horizontally the top between the rabbeted seat 13, and said flanged edge by nieansof bolts and nuts d. I 1
Neartheir lower ends or feet, these legs are secured together by means of a baseplate F, the shape of which preferably, con.- forms to that of the top and its downwardly turned edges f, are fastened to the inner sides of said legs by means of bolts and nuts g. f r
The gas fonthese plates-C and Dis'fura nished by means of'gas-pipes e, e, the outer ends of which lead to and are connected with a supply-pipe H by means of nipples h, which latter are provided with valves, whose upper ends have handles j'with which in toward and secured to the under sidesof l to regulate them. The outer ends of these gas pipes c, e, are supported by and pass through openings in theflanged edges fof the base-plate F and their inner ends terminate in elbows G that pass'up through openings in the base-plate whose eenters'ztline 1 7 with the centers of openings a, of top A and are secured into the lower endsofvertically disposed tubular mixing chambers I, or
pipes, substantially as shown inthe draws and have a gas-jet J screwed chamber extends upwardly in axial alinement with the axis ofelbow G, and opening a of the top,to a'point below the down wardly flanged edges of the latter,-and has the bore of its upper end provided with a V therein. The ends of the legs of the crossshaped mixing-plate are pushed" down intoseries of equi-distant longitudinal grooves T 7 these grooves as shown inFigure 7 and thus. the plate is retained in'the mixing chamber U as shown in Figure '5 of the drawings. The 7 upper end of this mixing chamber is exte riorlyscrew-threaded, and a screw threa'ded boss N is screwed down over the same, and this boss has a series of eQui-distant arms p, p, projecting upwards therefrom that are integral with and support an inverted concshaped spreader The flames issuing from the mini chamber impinge against the underside of this spreader Q, and aredirected radially outward against and thri h the grate-bars or arms 0, 0, projecting inwards from the circular rim of the gas-plate l), the inner ends of which arms terminate be fore reaching the center of said plate substantially as shown in Figure 1 of the draw ings.
The mixing chamber under consists of an upper and lower the upper section. a is screwed onto section so that it is in alinement axis of the lower section and the center of gas-plate C by means of sleeves let. The cross-shaped mixing plate 71: has its ends seated and immovably clamped between the butt edges of the lower section of the mixing chamber and the upper section thereof.
The plate C (Figure 3) comprises a circular rim and an inverted cone-shaped spreader R- which constitutes the center of the'plate and said spreader R is connected to and concentric with said rim and supported thereby through the medium of a series of equidistant radially extending bars or spokes r, r. r
In order to securely hold the mixing chambers in such a position that their axes, the axes of the jets, and the center of the mixing plate is will aline with the centers of the gas-plates, T have provided three braces L, L, and M, for each mixing chamber. The braces L, L, have their inner ends provided with openings, through which the upper section of the mixing-chambers I project, and they gradually decrease in idth or taper toward their outer ends as they extend upwards toward the under side of the inwardly projecting upper ends or the legs E, to the under side of which their outer gas-plate C section and the lower with the 7 ends are securely fastened by the bolts and nuts (Z, hereinbetore referred to. The braces M, M,aline with the centers of the gas-plates and are shaped similar to and are interchangeable with braces L, and the mixing chambers likewise extend up through openings in one end thereof and their adj acent ends are secured to the under side of the top A between said openings by means of screws m, m, or bolts and nuts similar to d and g. The converging ends of these braces are securely clamped to the upper section a of the mixing chamber 1, (Figure 3) by means of anut G which screws down over R in Figure .3, or may formipart of and be supportedthe boss-N as in Figure 5.
naoatar It does not makeany diilerence whether the gas mixing element in the mixing-chamber T, consists of a cross similar to that shown in Figure 9 or oi a substitute therefor, whether it consisting of a plate secured in the bore of the mixing-chamber substantially as hereinbefore explained or of any other device secured in any other manner therein. All such changes and other details of construction, I desire to be considered as comwithin the scope of my invention.
