CHARLES F. DE ARMOND, 0F ELKO, NEVADA.
TOOL OR DRILL HOLDER.
Application filed May 10, 1920, Serial No. 380,348. Renewed April 15, 1921. Serial No. 461,682.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. DE AR- MOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elko, in the county of Elko and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool or Drill Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a simple, compact and durable construction whereby a tool or drill may be strongly fastened in a head of any description without liability of the tool or drill being accidentally displaced, and yet when desired the tool or drill may be quickly and easily removed from the head and as readily replaced with a. new tool or drill.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof Figures 1 and 2 are longitudinal sections of my improvement, taken at right angles to each other.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the improvement.
Figure t is a fragmentary perspective of the inner end portion of the tool or drill.
Figure 5 is a perspective of the spring pressed locking member.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
As before indicated the head 1 may be of any description without affecting my invention. In furtherance of'my invention the head 1 is provided with a diametrical kerf 2, the inner end portion of which is flared or enlarged as indicated by 8, and housed in achamber 4 in the said head 1 is a coiled spring The said coiled spring 5 backs a locking member 6 which is preferably of taper formation to prevent displacement thereof from the head 1, and is provided in one side with a notch 7.
Movable endwise into and out of the kerf 3 in the head 1 is a tool or drill 8 having a head 9 of a shape in cross section corresponding to the enlargement 3 of the kerf 2. In one side of the tool or drill head 9 is formed a notch 10.
in the practical use of my improvement it will be manifest that when the parts are relatively arranged as sh wn in Figure 1,
the tool or drill 8 is strongly held in the head 1 without any liability whatever of the tool or drill being casually displaced. lVhen, however, the locking member 6 is moved rectilinearly inward against the action of the spring 5 until the notch 7 is co-incident with the tool or drill head 9, the said tool or drill head 9 may be knocked or otherwise moved edgewise out of the head 1. In this connection it will be understood that the member 6 in its normal position will rest in the notch 10 and thereby prevent edgewise movement of the tool or drill 8.
Also, that when the locking member 6 is held against the action of the spring 5 so that its notch 7 is registered with the enlargement 3 of the kerf 2, the said locking member 6 will not interfere in any measure with'the tool or drill being moved edgewise into the head 1. When, however, the notch 10 is alined with the member 6 and said member 6 is released, it will immediately enter the notch 10 in the manner and for the purpose before described.
An important feature of my invention resides in the fact that the transmission of shock or strain from the tool or drill 8 to the locking member 6 or the spring 5 is absolutely precluded.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent. is
The combination of a tool-holding head having a kerf the inner end portion of which is comparatively large, a tool or drill movable laterally edgewise into and out of said kerf and having a T-head shaped in conformity to the enlargement of the kerf and also having a notch in one side of its head, and a locking member movable lengthwise in the tool-holding head and alongside and longitudinally of the tool or drill and also movable into and out of the said notch in the tool or drill head and having a notch in its inner side adapted to be registered with the said tool or drill head; said notch normally resting out of registration with said head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES F. DE ARMOND.
