Be it known that I, HENRY N. MCKAY, citizen of the United States, and resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines and particularly those using a cylindrical platen.
One of the main objects of the invention is to so improve the cylinder machines as previously used in bookkeeping that a large work sheet (ledger sheet) and a smaller work sheet (statement) can be inserted into the machine with greater speed, convenience and accuracy than before and so that the vertical relation of the small sheet to the large sheet, on which it is superimposed,
may be altered and controlled at the will of the operator more readily than was formerly possible.
It is also an object of the invention to produce the desired result in controlling the vertical relation of two superimposed work sheets without the necessity of punch holes of any description in the sheets.
It is a further purpose of the invention to provide means for causing a large and small work sheet, when fed around the cylinder in superimposed relation either singly or simultaneously, to pass automatically on opposite sides of an auxiliary ribbon, and also to provide a more convenient means for preventing back printing from the auxiliary ribbon on the back of the top copy or small work sheet.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear my invention consists of the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

much of the No. 11 Remington machine as may be necessary to arrive at an understanding of my invention in 1ts embodlment therein.
The various devices and improvements in ,work sheet feeding and control are shown as applied to a No. 11 Remington machine equipped with auxiliary ribbon mechanism and bail. It is noted, however, that while certain of said devices enter into co-operation' with the auxiliary ribbon mechanism they are applicable to other cylinder machines, and that the work sheet feeding and control parts are not necessarily dependent on the auxiliary ribbon but may be used with carbon sheets as well.
For guiding the two work sheets in their lateral relation a compound chute or paper table designated as a whole by the reference numeral 1 is mounted on the carriage frame behind the cylinder, said chute having a main section 2, the width of the ledger or inside sheet, and a depressed section3, the width of the statement sheet. The sides 2 of the main section constitutes side edge gages for the inside sheet, whereas the side walls 3 of the depressed section constitute side guides for the narrow, outside or statement sheet. In the central or depressed section of the chute means are provided in the shape of spring clips 4: suitabl mounted, as on horizontal bars 5 adjustable vertically on the paper table by screws 6 and slots 7, for holding'the bottom edge of the statement form securely to the paper table during the insertion of the ledger sheet. A finger hole 8 or cut-out is provided in the upper portion of the depressed section of the chute for convenience in inserting the statement sheet under the clips 4. A forwardly curved flat spring 8 is mounted on the back of the chute below this finger hole, and arches forward through the finger hole in such manner as to prevent a work sheet when turned backward from catching under the clips accidentally.
In this machine it is frequently desirable to insert the statement sheet around the cylinder or platen 9 from the rear, secure it in position in the chute and then subsequently to feed a ledger sheet around the cylinder without disturbing the statement sheet. Therefore I have provided separate feedrolls 10 at each end of the cylinder, bearing only upon the margins of the ledger sheet which are beyond the limits of the statement sheet, and separate deflector plates 11 are provided at each end supplementing these side or marginal feed-rolls. In other words the central feed-rolls 12 which bear upon the statement sheet, together with their corresponding central portion or section 13 of the deflector plate are susceptible of being dropped away from contact with the cylinder or paper thereon while leaving the left and right marginal feed-rolls 10 and their corresponding marginal deflectors 11 in contact relation to the cylinder or the wide ledger sheet thereon.

These levers are mounted on the platen frame, for'controlling these two groups of feed-rolls and deflector plates,the central feed-rolls-12 and deflector l3mbeing considered one group, and the two sets of marginal feedrolls 10 with their corresponding deflectors 11 being'considered to constitute another group.
One convenient method of correlating the statement and the ledger forms is to have the adjustable horizontal bars 5 and clips 4 in the central or statement portion 3 of the chute so set that when the bottom edge of the statement is under the clips and against the horizontal bars or stops 5 the first writing line of the statement will be at the printing point of the machine. central feed-rolls and deflector dropped away from contact with the cylinder, a statement sheet is slipped around the cylinder from the rear and its bottom edge is Levers l4 and With the backed up under the spring clips and against the horizontal stops or bars.- A ledger sheet is then dropped into the chute between the guides 2, its top or leading edge resting against the marginal feed-rolls 10,. and is fed in the usual manner, by turning the cylinder knob or finger wheel, until the first writing line of the active section thereof is also brought to the printing point. The central feed-rolls and deflector are then restored to pressure relation with the cylinder and work sheets, by operating the required lever 14, and from then on the two work sheets are fed together forward or backward as desired, maintaining the desired correlation. 1
F or ideal convenience in manipulating two superimposed .work sheets in the machine, it is desirable to be able to 'Stop the narrower or superimposed outside sheet at any desired point of its feeding and maintain it fixed While moving the wider or inside work sheet forward or backward with relation to it. This result is effectively attained in accordance with the present invention with the aid of two groups (central and marginal) of the main feed-rolls bearing upon the cylinder.
To aid in accomplishing this ideal result in the control of work sheets I provide clamping mechanism mounted in the bottom portion of the center, depressed section of thechute and operated at will in a certain relation to the central feed-rolls and deflector. The clamp in this instance as shown comprises two clamping fingers 16 each mounted on a collar fixed -to a horizontal rod 17 mounted in suitable bearings on the back of the chute, said rod extending beyond the left edge of the chute and then forward and again to the left forming a crank 18 operable by an eccentric or cam 15 on a lever 15 located beside and on the same bearing with the central feed-roll release lever 14. The feed-roll release lever 14 has a projecting arm 14' which extends therefrom tothe rear of the lever 15, the parts being so constructed that a rearward movement of the lever 15 will carry the central feed-roll release lever 14 with it to releasing position, and so that restoring the center feed-roll release lever to normal position will cause the restoration of the .or clamping fingers-16 maybe provided at both the right and left sides of the statement portion of the chute if desired but in practice it has been found that one of these clamps is all that is required. The clamping means is maintained by a coil spring 17 in its rest position away from the back Wall pending the insertion of the ledger sheet,
or it may be retained by depressing the clamping lever 15. While thus retained by 'either means the ledger sheet is fed around with the cylinder as before described through the medium of the feed-rolls 10 in the margins. The operator then moves the lever 14 forward enabling the central feedrolls 12 to engage the sheets at the same time automatically causing the release of the clamps 16 so that the two work sheets may be fed together when the platen is turned. The operator may bring any desired line of the statement sheet to the printing point of the machine and thereupon depress the clamping lever 15 which carries with it the center feed-roll release lever. By this movement the statement sheet is completely freed from the cylinder of the machine while being steadfastly maintained in the desired position with relation to the printing point by the clamping means in the chute. This permits the operator to turn the ledger sheet forward or backwardto bring any desired line thereon to the printing point of the machine and therefore to a position directly behind the desired line of the statement. The operator may then release the central feed-rolls, causing the clamps to release the statement sheet and proceed with the entry or entries.
By the operation of the eccentric levers 14 and 15 the movement of the clampingledger sheet and sheet of carbon around the cylinder as is described above for ledger sheet only.
When the device is used with an auxiliary -ribbon 18, means are provided so that the work sheets may be fed around the cylinder from the rear without colliding with or fouling the auxiliary ribbon or its bail carrier 19, and also to cause the larger or wider inside work sheet to feed invariably behind the auxiliary ribbon and the narrower or outside work sheet to feed automatically and invariably in front of the auxiliary ribbon.
The first of these objects, to prevent the leading edges of the form or statement sheet from fouling the ribbon during insertion, is achieved by having all insertions made with the carriage at the extreme end of its writing line and by causing the ribbon bail to be lifted automatically when the inserting position of the carriage is reached. This automatic lifting is brought about by a roller carrying arm 20 mounted on the pivot or shaft 21 of the auxiliary ribbon bail, which arm, or the roller thereon, engages with a lifting cam 22 rigidly fixed to the front of the top plate of the machine, and so shaped and located that when the movement of the carriage toward the end of its line brings the arm into operative relation with the lifting cam, the arm will be so operated by the cam as to raise the auxiliary ribbon a suitable distance above the printing point of the machine, so that the two forms or sheets passing around the cylinder can pass one to the front and the other to the rear of said ribbon without touching it, allowing the ribbon to be received between the sheets.
More than one-arm may be provided if desired and these arms as shown are mounted on suitable bearings by which they may be adjusted along the shaft 21 so that the lift of the ribbon may be produced at whatever point or points in the movement of the carriage such lifting may be required. The bearings 23 by which the arms 20 are supported on the shaft 21 are held in adjusted position on the shaft by set screws 24. Since it may be desired at times to cause the ribbon carrying bail to be inactive, the arms are hinged to the bearings 23 so that they may be tipped over out of the path of the lifting cam when needful.
In order to cause the ledger sheet, or wider work sheet, to pass invariably behind the auxiliary ribbon, means are provided to hold this ledger sheet close to the cylinder during its feeding operation and thus guide its top edge on the cylinder side of the auxiliary ribbon. These ledger sheet controling guides are here shown as peculiarly shaped strips 25 of spring steel attached to the forward edges of the two small deflector plates 11 at the ends of the cylinder and curve upward and toward the center of the cylinder roughly following the cylinder curve for a certain distance.
It will be seen that with the carriage in inserting position, for example at the extreme left-hand limit of its movement, the natural tendency of the top edge of 'the statement sheet when inserted around the cylinder from the rear, is to project forward at a tangent on emerging from between the cylinder and center deflector 13. To obtain the desired result of causing the statement to feed accurately on the forward side of the auxiliary ribbon it is only necessary to control this natural tendency of the statement. This is done by providing two fiat guide fingers 26 mounted on collars 27 which are adjustable along and rigidly fastened by means of set screws 28 to a rotatably mounted cross-rod or shaft 29 having its end bearings in the side arms of the ribbon carryin bail 19. To one end of this rotatable r0 or shaft 29 is rigidly attached a crank arm 30. A pin 30 on the operating end of this crank arm is engaged in a rigid slottedcam 31 fastened to the carriage frame so that when the ribbon bail is automatically lifted the guide-finger shaft 29 is caused to rotate a certain distance and return to its original position when the ribbon bail drops. The flat guide-fingers 26 in rest position are approximately horizontal and lie out of the way. When the carriage is moved to the extreme left end inserting position and the ribbon bail lifts, these fiat fingers 26 are caused to turn their forward-ends downward so as to receive the top or leading edge of the statement sheet as it emerges from between the cylinder and center deflector 13 and to guide said top edge upward, close to, and on the forward side of the auxiliary ribbon. The rearward ends of these fingers, when the ribbon bail drops back to its normal operative position, serve to press back the upper or leading portion of the statement sheet and maintain it close to the cylinder in the correct position for writing.
For the convenience of the operator in con trolling the manifolding on the ledger sheet a novel device is provided for lifting the auxiliary ribbon into a non-manifolding position, which position is intermediate between the normal manifolding or rest position of the ribbon and the completely lifted or inserting position of said ribbon. When the auxiliary ribbon is in this intermediate or non-manifolding position it is lifted just far enough so that no part of it remains in the path of the type. Hence it follows that when said ribbon is in this position the operator can write headings or other data on the statement sheet without having same manifold on the ledger sheet.
This result is produced by means of a hand actuated slotted arm 32 pivotally mounted at one end on the carriage, the slot 33 being en aged with a pin 34 projecting from the si e member of the bail. is peculiarly contoured having a shoulder 35 therein, which is so formed that when the slotted. arm is lifted by means of its outer end the walls of theslot co-acting with the projecting pin 34 will cause the ribbon bail to lift far enough to prevent manifolding and when so lifted the said shoulder in the slot will support the pin, and thus the bail, in the desired non-manifolding position. The slotted arm is provided with a spring 36 so designed that when the bail is lifted farther, either by hand or automatically through the lifting cam 22 which operates at the end of the line, the pin will be released from the supporting shoulder 35 in the slot, allowing the ribbon bail to drop back to its normal rest or manifolding position.
I have provided means in the present instance to prevent the auxiliary ribbon from back printing on the form in front of the ribbon, in this case the statement sheet. To avoid this back print previously, it was customary in some instances to employ a short strip of paper or other fabric which was fastened to the guide brackets of the ribbon carrying bail by gluing or sewing the ends of the strip upon themselves. This means has always been extremely unsatisfactory, due to the short life of a non-adjustable short strip and the cumbersome and awkward manner of replacing a worn strip with a fresh one. These difiiculties in the way of eliminating back printing have been completely eliminated in the present invention through the novel use of a shield ribbon 37 wound on a spool 38 mounted on a rigid arm 39 projecting from one side of the ribbon bail 19 and feeding through suitable guides 40 so as to follow a path within and in front of the auxiliary ribbon to a receiving spool 36 similarly mounted on a rigid projection 39 from the opposite side member of the bail.
Double guide openings 40 and 41 are formed in the ribbon carrying bail to permit the auxiliary ribbon and the shield ribbon each to travel through its own guide opening or separate guide. The shield ribbon feeding and receiving spools are equipped with pressure springs 42 designed to bear against and produce sufficient friction upon spools to maintain them in whatever position they are rotatively adjusted to, in spite of the constant lifting and falling of the auxiliary ribbon carrying bail. B this means a constant tension of the shie d ribbon is assured to maintain taut the stretch of ribbon between the two spools.
Whenever a certain portion of the shield ribbon, in protecting the backs of the state- The slot ment sheet from back printing, have absorbed sufficient ink to permeate the shield ribbon fabric, or when that section has become worn, the operator simply winds the shield ribbon from the feeding spool to the receiving spool far enough to bring a fresh 46 which extends transversely across-the machine and is thus supported by the carriage. This shaft has two ribbon spools 47 loosely mounted thereon. One flange of each spool is provided with projections 48 with which a pivoted clutch member or lever 49 is adapted to engage to lock the associated spool to turn with the shaft. A spring 50 engages one arm of each of the pivoted clutch levers and is adapted to hold it in either the engaging or disengaging position. The right-hand end of the shaft 46 carries a ratchet wheel 51 engaged by a spring detent 52 to prevent backward rotation. An actuating pawl 53 is pivoted at 54 on a slide 55 adapted to move fore and aft of the machine and supported at one end by a pin and slot connection on the upright arm of the associated bracket 45. The opposite end of this slide is pivoted to the upper end of the usual bell crank 56 of the line spacing mechanism so that as the upper end of the lever moves rearwardly it will cause a corresponding movement of the slide and an actuation of the feed pawl 53 to turn the shaft 46 and thus feed the ribbon. A coiled spring 57 is connected at one end to the pawl 53 and at its opposite end to the. slide 55 in order to maintain the engaging end of the pawl in cooperation with the ratchet wheel. From the foregoing it will be understood that each operation of the line spacing handle 43 is effective to turn the ratchet wheel one or more notches to effect a longitudinal feed of the auxiliary ribbon.
It will also be understood that the reversal in the direction of the feed of the ribbon is controlled by the clutch levers. Thus by releasing the clutchlever from the full spool and engaging the clutch lever associated with the empty spool, the ribbon will 1be wound from the full to the empty spoo The above various but closely related novel devices constitute what is now commonly termed a collating mechanism.
Itshould be pointed out that the above described collating mechanism makes possible daily entry postings on fold-over forms such as department store bills, etc., without the use of carbon.
By employing the fold-over form with the fold at the bottom and with the top sheet or bill narrower than the bottomsheet or charge, leaving a suitable margin at the right and at the left, these forms can be inserted speedily into this collating machine. The above described ribbon bail control mechanism and feed control mechanism will cause the original or outside sheet to feed automatically and invariably in front of the auxiliary ribbon and the duplicate or inside sheet in back of it. The shield ribbon eliminates entirely the objectionable back printing from the bill.
For this kind of work no special chute is needed and a stock paper feed and stock or standard deflector plate are used. The form is dropped into a standard style of chute of a requisite width upon a set of end-guides preferably, and is fed in the usual manner to the desired writing line. As the carriage is returned to the beginning of the line to write the posting, the auxiliary ribbon drops into manifolding position. After the entry is made the carriage is tabulated again to the end of the line and the fold-over form is pulled out of the machine bottom first.
The auxiliary ribbon control mechanism, and the means for preventing back printing, described above, are claimed in a divisional application Sr. No. 339,287 filed by me November 20, 1919.
Various changes may be made in the construction without departing from my invention and certain of the features thereof may be employed without others.
What I claim as new and desire to secure rollers co-operating with said platen, and
common operating means controlling the engagement and release of said feed rollers I and the engagement and disengagement of said clamping means.
3. In a typewriting machine, the comb1- nation of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a paper table or support, feed rollers co-operating with said platen, means for pressing against a work sheet and clamping and holding it on said paper table or support, and a lever operative to control the application of the clamping means to a Work sheet on the paper table or support and release the feed rollers seriatim.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried there by, a paper table or support, feed rollers co-operating with said platen, means for pressing against a work sheet and clamping and holding it on said paper table or support, a lever operative to control the application of the clamping means to a work sheet on the paper table or support and release the feed rollers seriatim, and a second lever operative to release the clamp and restore the feed rollers to operation in the reverse order.
5. In a typewriting machine,'the combination of a carriage, a paper table or support having a depressed center section equipped with an adjustable cross bar which constitutes a gage for the bottom of the work sheet, and an adjustable spring clip for holding the work sheet on the paper table or support.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage. a platen carried thereby, and means for guiding the leading ends of work sheets as they are introduced into the machine and positioned .on the platen, said means comprising paper fingers and automatically operating means for shifting said paper fingers into and out of operative positions.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a paper table or support, and a leaf spring mounted on the paper table and extending forward of the front face thereof to deflect a work sheet away from the face of the paper table.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a paper table or sup port carried thereby, a spring clip for holding a work sheet to the paper table, and a deflecting spring carried by the paper table and co-operative with a work sheet to prevent it from catching under said spring clip.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, a deflector co-operative with said platen and comprising a plurality of independent sections disposed longitudinally of the platen, and means for effecting a movement of a center section away from the platen while the terminal sections remain in co-operative relation therewith.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a paper table or work sheet support carried thereby and having a finger opening to facilitate adjusting a work sheet on the paper table, and a deflecting spring which projects through said opening and is effective to deflect a work sheet away from the face of the paper table.
11. In a typewriting machine, the com;
bination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, feed rollers which extend throughout the length of the platen and 00- act therewith, a work sheet clamp, and a sin gle means for controlling the movement of the clamp into engagement with a work sheet and for controlling the movement of the center feed rollers out of co-operation with the platen or paper thereon, said controllin means being ineffective on the terminal feed rollers so that the latter may remain in engagement with the platen or paper thereon while the center rollers are removed from the platen.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotative platen carried thereby, a work sheet support or table on the carriage, clamping means for clamping a work sheet to said support or table, feed rollers which extend throughout the length of the platen, and a common means for controlling the engagement of the clamping means and the release of feed rollers near the center of the platen, the terminal feed rollers being out of control of said common controlling means so that the latter may be operated independently of the terminal feed rollers.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, and a paper table or support carried thereby, said paper table having a chute-like formation with side edge gages formed at the sides thereof and a central depressed portion to receive a comparatively narrow sheet, the side walls in the depression forming side edge gages for the narrow sheet.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, means co-operative with the platen to feed the innermost of two superposed work sheets with the platen, a clamp which co-acts only with the outermost work sheet and holds it while the innermost sheet is being fed by the platen, and means operable at will to control the engagement of said clamp with the outermost work sheet and to release said clamp as may be desired.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, feed rollers which co-operate with the platen and engage only the innermost of two superposed work sheets, and clamping means independent of the platen which engages only the outermost of the two work sheets and holds it while the innermost sheet is fed independently thereof with the platen.
16. In -a typewriting machine, the com-.
bination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, feed rollers which co-operate with the platen and engage only the innermost or wider of two superposed work sheets, clamp= ing means independent of the platen which engages only the outermost and narrower of the two work sheets and holds it while the and with both of said sheets to feed them together as the platen is turned.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, feed rollers which co-operate with the platen and engage only the innermost of two superposed work sheets, clamping means independent of the platen which engages only the outermost of the two work sheets and holds it while the innermost sheet is fed independently thereof with the platen, a feed roller which cooperates with the platen and with both of said sheets to feed them together as the platen is turned, and feed roller releasing means for controlling said last mentioned feed roller independently of said first mentioned feed rollers.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, feed rollers which co-operate with the platen and engage only the outermost and wider of two superposed work sheets, means independent of the platen which engages only the outermost and narrower of the two work sheets and holds'dt while the innermost and wider work sheet is fed independently thereof with the platen, a feed roller which co-operates with the platen and with both of said sheets to feed them together as the platen is turned, and means for simultaneously operating said clamp and releasing the last mentioned feed roller independently ofsaid first mentioned feed rollers.
19. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a paper table carrled thereby, two work sheet collating devices associated with and at the front face of the paper table and operative to bear against a work sheet and clamp and hold it against endwise movement on said table, and means whereby one of saidLdevices may be moved independently of the other.
20. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a paper'table carried thereby, a rockshaft carried b y the paper table, a work sheet clamp carried by said shaft and arranged at the front of the paper table and operative to hold a work sheet against endwise movement on the paper table, and means forcontrolling the turning of said shaft and the clamping and releasing movement of said work sheet clamp.
21. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a paper table carried thereby, and means for collating two work sheets one narrower than the other and comprising work sheet edge gaging means and work sheet clamping means at the front face of the paper table and operative to hold a work sheet in definite fixed relation to the paper table and against endwise movement thereon while the collating is being effected.
22. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotary platen and paper table carried thereby, and means for collating work sheets and feeding said work sheets together after they are collated, said means comprising a device associated with. the paper table for holding one sheet against endwise movement and in fixed relation to the paper'table while another sheet is fed independently thereof by a rotation of the platen. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a paper table carried thereby, and means for collating work sheets comprising gaging means associated with the paper table and co-operative with an edge of a work sheet to gage the sheet, clamping means for holding the sheet thus gaged against movement on the paper table, and means which enable another work sheet to be moved to collating position while the first mentioned sheet is held clamped to the paper table.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a collating work sheet table or support carried thereby and having a work sheet end gage and a side guide, a clamp for holding a work sheet fixed against endwise movement relatively to the paper table when a sheet is posltioned to coact with said gage and guide,
and means which enable another sheet to be collated while the first mentioned sheet is held against movement on the collating support.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, paper feeding devices coacting with the platen, a collating table or support, and clamping means for holding work on the collating table while the work extends between the platen and the feeding devices, said clamping means comprising devices for engaging the work at both sides of the collating table.
30. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, collating means carried thereby and comprising supporting surfaces for maintaining superposed sheets to be collated spaced apart, means positioning the sheets laterally one with relation to another, and clamping means associated with one of said supporting surfaces and cooperative with a sheet thereon to hold it against endwise movement on said surface.
31. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a feed roller co-operative with said platen, and collating means comprising supporting surfaces for maintaining superposed sheets to be collated spaced apart while the sheets extend between the feed roller and platen, guiding means for positioning the sheets laterally one with reference to another while they are maintained spaced apart, gaging means with which an end of a sheet coacts, and clamping means associated with one of said supporting surfaces and cooperative with a sheet thereon to hold it against endwise movement thereon.
