A. FRANCONETTI GEM SEAT GROOV'ING TOOL Filed Sent. 27, 1922 in settings which Patented July 1, 1924.
UNITED AUGUST FRANCONETTI, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
GEM-SEAT-GROOV'ING TOOL.
Application filed September 27, 1922. Serial No. 590,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST FRANooNE'r'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gem-Seat-Grooving Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for forming gem seating grooves in rings and other jewelry where the stones are set in openings other than round openings, although the device is likewise adapted for use in grooving round openings for the reception of stones. I
Jewelers experience considerable difficulty in setting oval, square and irregular cuts, due to the fact that the groove upon which the stone must seat in the setting must be cut by hand, causing the groove to be often irregular and resulting in many instances are not as perfect as they should be. For this reason, the setting of odd shaped gems is usually comparatively costly. This invention provides means whereby the groove of such irregular openings may be cut to a uniform depth both as regards the size of the groove and the spacing of the gem seat from the face of the setting in which the gem is to be placed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very cheaply produced and readily operated, and in the use of which no special tools or accessories are required.
;These and other objects I attain by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout.
In the drawings v Figure 1 is a side elevation partially in section showing a device constructed in accordance with my invention in use for forming a gem seating groove in a ring set opening;
Figure Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken through the shaft showing one manner of mounting the burr therein, and
Figure 4 is a modified form of burr.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a shaft 2 is a section on the line 22 of adapted for engagement in a jewelers lathe and having formed thereon at a point spaced from the end, or secured thereto as desired, an abutment member or collar 11. The end of the shaft has either formed thereon or secured thereto a cutter or burr 12, in Figure 1 this burr being'shown as formed integrally with the shaft and in Figure 3 being illustrated as provided with a shank 13 inserted in a bore formed in the end of the shaft. This cutter is in the form of two cones having their bases disposed against one another, the outer faces of these cones being provided with teeth, one of the cones being secured either to the shaft 10 or shank 13 as the case may be. If desired, a cutter such as shown in Figure 4 may be employed wherein the teeth are formed only on the outer cone of the cutter head.
The numeral 14 designates a member slidably and rotatably mounted upon the end 'of the shaft 10 in which the cutter 12 is mounted, and adapted to abut against the collar 11. This member has formed thereon a flange 15 which, when the member abuts the collar 11, is flush with the end of the,
It has been found in practice that with a structure as above recited, odd shaped stone receiving openings may be readily grooved and in a very short space of time when compared with the ordinary hand operation. It will be obvious that by varying the shape of the cutter or burr 12, the character of the groove may likewise be altered the shaft 10 placed in a,
to suit the requirements of the work at hand, and I do not accordingly wish to limit myself to the specific construction of the burr or to the specific structure above recited except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim I. In a device for forming grooves in the 'walls of gem receiving openings of jewelry comprising a rotatable shaft, a burr carried by the end of the shaft, and a flange carried by the shaft and adapted for engagement by it of jewelry in which the grooves are to be formed, said flange being adjustable longitudinally of the shaft.
2. In a device for forming grooves in the walls of gem receiving openings of jewelry comprising a rotatable shaft, a burr carried by the end of the shaft, and a flange carried by the shaft and adapted for engagement by it of jewelryin which the grooves are to be formed,'said flange being adjustable longitudinally of the shaft, said shaft being rotatable in said flange.
3. In combination with a burr chucking neeaeie shaft for jewelers lathes and the like and a burr carried thereby,-a stop element carried by the shaft at a point spaced from the burr receiving end thereof, a member mounted on the shaft and abutting the stop member, a flange formed on the opposite end of the member and having that face thereof next adjacent the burr highly polished, and means insertible intermediate the first named end of the member and the stop element for adjusting the member longitudinally of the shaft.
In testimony thereof I afiix my signature.
AUGUST FRANCQNEIII.
