Description

Patented Mar. 18, 1924.
UNITED STATES 1,487,500 PATENT oFFlcE.
LESLIE ELVINiWILLIAMS, 0F WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR. OEONE-HALF T0 CLIFFORD ALLDAY, OF PET'ROLIA, TEXAS;
CHANGEABLE SIGN WITH LOCKING DEVICE.
Application filed January 11, 1923. Serial No. 611,950.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, LESLIE ELvIN VVIL- mAMs, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing at Wichita Falls, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Changeable Sign with Locking Device, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a changeable sign with a locking device, comprising a frame to be supported by a chain or other suitable means, providing a swinging sign, or it may be mounted upon a standard, the invention as herein illustrated is mounted upon a standard. The standard is constructed of two pieces of wood or metal. One piece riveted or bolted to the frame, the other piece of material bolted to the first mentioned piece of material, forming an A shape. This sign may be constructed with one standard in the center thereof or it may be constructed with a standard on each end thereof. The frame of the sign being constructed of angle iron or other suitable material, having hinges arranged thereon for the purpose of opening the sign. A locking device is also arranged thereon, comprising a certain number of eyelets on the frame and a corresponding number of eyelets on the hinged frame. A rod is inserted through the above mentioned eyelets and held securely in place at one end with a lock of any suitable design. An auxiliary sign is arranged on the top thereof, and is held in place with strap iron or other suitable material. One end of the strap iron being riveted or bolted to the frame of the main sign. The other end of the strap iron is riveted or bolted to the auxiliary sign.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this nature to be used on highways. The auxiliary sign is intended for a highway marker; the main sign to contain the advertising matter.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this character to be used as a changeable sign for the front of stores. The sign may also be used as an interior advertising device.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this nature which is very simple and practical and can be manufactured and sold at a very nominal cost.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description isread in connection with the accompanying drawing, formin-g'a part of this application. i The invention residing in the construction as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the various parts are referred to by numbers. And, whereas,
Figure 1 is a side iew.
Figure 2 is an end view.
Figure 3 is a plain view of the sign.
The device forming the subject matter of this invention comprises a frame 1, which is stationary to the standards 2. The standards 2 being attached to the frame 1 with rivets, bolts or other suitable means. 3 are braces which are riveted or bolted to the standards 2 as illustrated at 4:. 5 is a frame corresponding in size to the frame 1. The frame 5 being hinged to the frame 1 as illustrated at 6. 7 are eyelets securely attached to the frame 5. 8 are eyelets securely attached to the frame 1. 9 is a rod or shaft inserted through the eyelets 7 and 8 and held securely in place by means of a lock 10. The auxiliary sign 11 is attached to the frame 1 with strap iron and bolts or rivets as illustrated at 12. I
hen in posit-ion for use this device serves as a very eflicient sign, in as much as the advertising matter, as illustrated on the sign 13 in Figure 3, may be quickly and economically changed. When it is desired to change the advertising matter, the lock 10 is unlocked and removed. The rod or shaft 9 is then removed from the eyelets 8 and 7. The frame 5 may then be lowered, as illustrated in Figure 2, and the sign 13 removed. Another sign may then be inserted in the frame 1 and the frame 5 closed, and again inserting the rod or shaft 9 through the eyelets 7 and 8. The lock is then applied to the rod or shaft 9, thus preventing the sign 13 I from being removed by any person not hav ing a key for the lock 10.
\Vhile it is believed from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the device will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and decomprising a pair of standards attached to a frame; a pair of bracing standards attached to said first mentioned standards; a frame hinged to said first mentioned frame, each frame having a plurality of eyelets at the top thereof, a perforated member attached at each end of the first mentioned frame; a rod having ahead on one end and an eyelet on one end inserted through said perforated members and said eyelets, a lock larger than the hole in said perforated members, locked in the eyelet of said rod.
'2. A changeable sign with locking device comprising a pair of standards, a frame mounted on said standards, a frame hinged to said first mentioned frame, a bulletin board disposed between said frames, a locking device comprising a plurality of apertured members'attaehed at the top of both
