Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
N. W. ROBINSON, OF KEESVILLE, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR MANUFACTURING BARREL-HEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,829, dated May 6, 1856.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, N. IV. ROBINSON, of Keesville, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Making Barrel-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a front elevation of my improved machine. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of ditto. Fig. 3, is a vertical section of ditto, the plane of section being through the center of the machine. Fig. et, is a horizontal section of ditto, (Z), (Z) Fig. 3, being the plane of section. Fig. 5, is also a horizontal section of ditto, (WV) (W), Fig. 3, being the plane of section. In this View, the under side of the clamp, upper cutting disk, and ring, are shown. Fig. 6, is a section of the upper cutting disk, (X), (X), Fig. 5, is the plane of section. Fig. 7, is also a section of the upper cutting disk. (Y), (Y), Fig. 5, is the plane of sect-ion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for making barrel heads, and consists 1st. In the combination of two rotating cutting disks, stationary bed, movable slide and clamp, arranged in such a manner that barrel heads may be cut, planed, and chamfered, either out of a single piece of stuii', or out of several pieces, and without changing their position from the time the stu is placed in the machine, until the heads are finished.
2d. My invention consists in a peculiar construction of the cutting disks, whereby the disks may be rmly attached to the arbors, and a free passage given the shavings from the cutters.
3d. My invention consists in a peculiar construction of the clamp, whereby it may be adjusted so as to suit different sized barrel heads, and also barrel heads varying in thickness.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, represents a frame constructed in any proper manner, and B, B, are vertical arbors working in suitable bearings, (a),
attached to the frame, A, by horizontal arms, C, O, C, C. See Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. The arbor, B, is at the upper part of the frame, and the arbor, B, at the lower part. Both arbors work loosely in the bearings, (a), and can be moved up and down, when required.
D, D, are pulleys placed on each arbor; one pulley, D', being an idle pulley, and the other one, D, a working pulley. A rotating motion is given the arbors, by means of the working pulleys.
E, E', are circular' cutting disks attached one at the end of each arbor, shown more particularly in Fig. 3. On the back ot each disk, there is a .hollow or bowed hub, F, shown clearly in Figs. 1, and 3, and these hubs are attached to the arbors.
F2, F2, are cutters placed radially in each disk; the two cutters are placed in reverse positions, and their ends meet at the center of the disk. See Figs. 3, 5, and 6. The cutters are secured in the disks by set screws which pass through slots in the cutters, and into the disk, whereby the cutters are made adj ust able.
G, G, are two cutters placed at the edge of each disk, at opposite points, for the purpose of cutting the bevel on the edge of the barrel head, see Figs. 1, 3, 5, and 7. These cutters are secured in slides, H, H, which fit in recesses, (b), (b), in the disks, see Figs. 3, 5, and 7.
I, I, are vertical cutters, which are attached to the same slides, H, H, on their outer edges, one on each slide, see Figs. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7.
Both of the disks, E, E, are constructed precisely alike, and the several cutters are also arranged precisely similar on both disks.
J, is a stationary bed, attached by brackets, (C), (C), to t-he frame, A. The bed has a circular aperture at its center, which is larger in diameter 'than the barrel heads are intended to be. The bed is placed horizontally between the two cutting disks, E, E, see Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
K, Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4f, and 5, is a circular clamp formed of a series of segments (d), attached to the under side of a ring, (e). There is a spring', between the upper part of each segment, (d), and the under side of the ring, (e), as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The segments are attached to the ring by set screws, (g), by which the segments may be adjusted nearer to, or farther from the edge of the ring. In the under edges of the segments, small beads, (L), are driven.
L, is a ring, which encompasses the lower parts of the segments. The ring, L, Yis secured to the frame, A, by set screws, (i),
(2'), and may therefore be adjusted as re-r gards height, as desired.
The clamp, K, is secured to a sliding frame, M, which works in suitable guides, (j), (j), see Figs. l, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
N, N N2, are levers by which the clamp may be elevated or depressed, when desired.
O, is a slide which works in proper grooves, (7c), (7c), in the upper part of a frame, I), directly underneath the bed, J, see Figs. 1, 2, and 3. On the upper surface of the slide, O, there is a circular ledge, (Z), having brads, (m), driven in its surface, see Figs. l, and 3.
R, is a lever by which the lower arbor, B, is moved up or down.
S, S, S2, are levers by which the upper arbor, B, is moved up or down.
Operation: The lower disk, E', Vis depressed, and the upper disk, E, is elevated. The frame, P, is also depressed, and the clamp, K, is kept elevated, or raised, by means of a spring, T, on the upper part of the frame, A, see Figs. l, and 2. The stuff, U, to be formed in barrel heads, is placed upon the bed, J, see Fig. l, directly between the two cutting disks, E, E, the slide, O, having been previously withdrawn from underneath the bed. The clamp, K, is then pressed down upon the stuff by depressing the lever, N, with the foot, and the brads, (7L), in the under edges of the segments, (d) enter the stuft', and hold it firmly upon the bed, J, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower cutting disk, E, having a rotary motion, is now forced upward against the under side of the stuff, U, and the cutters, F2, F2, plane the under surface of the stuft', while the cutters, G, Gr, bevel the edges, and the vertical cutters, I, I, cut half through the stulf, partially forming the edge of the barrel. Ihe
lower cutting disk, E', is then allowed to fall, and the slide, O, is shoved underneath the bed, J, and raised upward against the under surface of the stuff, U, by operating the lever, Q, which raises the frame, P. vWhen the slide, O, is raised, the brads, (m),

slide, O, is retained in this raised position,
and the upper disk, E, having a rotary Inotion, is brought down upon the upper surface of the stuff, and the cutters, F2, F2, plane the upper surface, and the cutters, G, G, bevel the edges, and the vertical cutters, I, I, cut entirely through the stuff, and the head is formed. The frame, P, is then allowed to descend, and the clamp, K, allowed to rise; and the slide, O, is drawn outward from underneath the bed, J, the barrel head being upon it, as shown in Fig. 2.V The head is removed from the slide, and the operation repeated, to form another head. The ring, L, clears the superliuous,
or waste pieces of stu from the brads, (7L), y
in the under edges of the segments, when the clamp is raised.
By having the segments, (CZ), adjustable on the ring, (e), and the cutters, G, G, I, I,
on the disks, E,v E, adjustable, heads of different sizes may be formed. The springs, (f), between the upper surfaces of the seg ments, and the under surface of the ring, allow the clamp to operate equally well upon stuff of different thicknesses. VThe hollow or bowed hubs, F, allow the shavings to pass freely from the cutters, F2, F2, and prevent them from chokingor clogging.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Y l. The peculiar construction of the clamp K as herein shown and described, viz: said clamp being formed of a ring c having segments el attached to its under side by set screws g placed between the upper surface of the segments and under surface of the ring, by which construction the clamps may be enlarged or contracted so as to suit different sized barrel heads.
2. I claim the stationary bed piece J and rotary planing disk E in combination with the sliding clamp O for the purpose of allowing said planing disk to plane and chamfer thev whole surface of one side of the barrel head t' and then support it in its posi- N. WV. ROBINSON.
