To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that we, OSWOLD HARRY SNAZELLE, J OHN HETHERI-NGTON, and LOUIS MANTELL MoILDowIn, subjects of the King: of England, all residing in London, Eng
land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatusfor Cleaning ,Windows and Similar Purposes, of which' the followingis a specification;
This invention consists in a power-driven clevice primarily intended for cleaning windows but useful also for other purposesparticularly where a surfacehto be cleanedfis diflicult of access by hand.
' The device according to this invention] essentially comprises, in combinationa portable motor (for example an electric motor) providedwith handles or the like for holding it conveniently,. 'and provided with a shaft which is extended outwards from it, and means forsecuring interchangeably to the free end ofsaid extended shaft any one of a series of brushes, mops or other cleaning appliances.
, Preferably, the device is provided with a change-speed gearing through which the extended shaft is driven by the motor; for example a gearing which provides a low speed;
and a high speed, the former for use in cleaning with wet brushes ormops, and the latter when polishing with dry mops.
The extended shaft mayb'emade in sections reach of which is provided with means at one end for readily connectin it toa' driving shaft mounted permanently in the motorcasing, and connecting means at ,the other end to enable a cleaning appliance or an-i other shaft-section to be readily secured thereto. By this means the-length of the ex 7 tended shaft maybe varied to suit different requirements, and also the :device may be packed into a .small'space by disconnecting all theshaft-sections.
Each shaft-section, ispreferably mounted in bearings in a casing whichis provided with connecting means, such as bayonetjoints, at eachend to enable them to be readily connected together end to end and a to theend of a casinglsurrounding the driv- I ing shaft, andthe ends ofeach shaft-section,
as well as the end' ofthe; driving shaft, are provided withJclutchmerribers so-situated as .7
to be in engagement with each otherf when the casmgsare connected.
[in which In orderf to-j secure readyiiinterchange ability of the cleaning appliances the end pliances.
A device according to this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
' Figure l'is 7 parts of the extended shaft broken away;
and on a sectlons the same scale'as Figure 1;of variousiforms Figures 3, 4, 5, 16 and 7 i are elevatibnsajto' an elevationgof the device with a 1 Figure 2 is an; elevation'partly in section, zlargeriscale, of one 'offthe shaft 1 'same scale as Figure 2, of theqchange=speed gearing and the driving shaft, and showing the end of one shaft-sectioncoupledto the driving shaft;
The formof the invention illustrated comprises a-small electricvmotor2,'the .c'asing'o'ii which is extended at each end to form handles &, Current is, led to the motor through a long flexible cable 8 which passes 7 through the handle et andis providedat: its
end with a plug which can'be fitted into any ordinary lamp-socket. Afswitch for startmg and stopping is provided, which is 0pat the end 'ofxthe dle 4.} c
6 contains a change-speed gearing, ill'us-Y 'ter-shaft 12 drivenv from the motor-shaft erated by a, ring lOJrotating between stops casing next tothe han- The part of the, casing next to thehandle- I trated in Figure 8,'which comprises a 'counllb-y. gears 16, 18'and having fast to it two dissimilarpiilions 2,0, 22 in mesh with two "gears 24;, 26-jrespectively, loose on :ashaft 28 (hereinafter referred to asthe driving shaft) either of .Whichgears can be clutched clutch member 30's'plined'to the, shaft and capable of engagement with clutch-teeth 32 joneither of the two-gears. This clutchmember' can be moved from outside the cas to the driving-shaft by meansfof a {sliding 7 ing, and provided-with: a knob 40:.andl'a spring plate 42 which: snaps into any 'one ofth e-dep s ions 4a iath'e 9 1??? s r-i face of the casing, corresponding to the low speed, free and high speed positions lot the gearing.
It is primarily intended that the low speed-should be used with wet cleaningiap and accordingly the two extreme positions of the knobgiOare marked wet and dry respectively on the casing, as shown in Figure 1. The motor and "change-speed gearing are arranged, in the example shown, to-give a'lowspeed Ojf250 revolutions per minute, and a ihigh speed of 125.0 revolutions'per minute.
The outer end of the driving shaft 28 is supported in ball bearin-gs in a hollow plug 46 screwed into the end of the handle 6 (Figure 8). and carries a dog-clutch member 48 which lies "within the plug. Thelatter is provided with laterally projecting pins 50.
' The 'hereinbefore-mentioned extended shaft ismade' in sections, one-of which is shown in "Figure 2. {This shaft-section 52 ismounteddn baILbearingsin a tubular casing M rthe right-hand or outer end 56 of which is "of -the same external diameter as the outer partof the plug 46 and has pins 58 similar to the pins 50.
The right-hand end of the shaft-section '52, not shown in thedrawings, has a clutch member exactly similar to :the clutch-mem- V ber 48, the plugr4'6 with the clutch-member 48 being, in fact, identical in all respects with'theend 56 of the casing "54 and the clutch member at the end of the shaft-sec- -:i3i0Il "52.
The left-hand or vinner end of the casing 54 shown in Figure8, is provided with a socket :60 capableof fitting over the plug .46 (or o'ver the outer end of :anothersimilar' casing-T54) and provided with bayonet-joint slots 62 to engage the pins 50. The lefthand end of the shaft-section '52 is provided with a clutch-member tie so situated as to engage the clutch-member 48 when the socket 60- and plug 46 are in engagement, as shown clearly in F igure -8.
, 7 It willzbe readily understood that a numberof such shaft-sections and casings 'may be assembled endto-end with the casings held rigidly in alignment andthe shaft-sections coupled together. Two such "sections are shown'assemb-ledin Figure 1;
Inprder .to secure a brush or-mop to the extendedshaft an end section,':shown in Fig- :urei2, is employed which consits of a-short mountedin ball-bearings in a socket "6'8 similar to thesocke-t-itifl, sothat it can be assem- 'bled..rwith the outer end of any one of the shaft-sections, OI WllLh the plug 4:6 "and the shaft 28. "The outer-end of theshaft 66-is :prowided with a socketfz'O having bayo'neto-1nt-s1ots72,-and-the s'tudsfi of the brushes and 'mops shown I in Figures 3 to '7 are made the-use of ladders;
tor through said 'era't'ive engagement with i the casings are connected shaft 66 carrying a clutch-member '67 and hina-t'ion a portab gearing, a xd'rit l f -tor -thronghsaid-n pins 76' engaging the islets 172, so that any one of the brushes or mops-may be readily securedto the outer end ofthe sectional extended shaft. 7 r pliances, and the high speed with dryenes,.
7 The appliance shown in Figure 3 isa conical brush 78, that shown in Figure 4: 1s a form of a helicalspring. Figure 5 shows a cylindrical'rbrush:84, and Figures 6 and 7 illustrate mopsrconsisting of strips 86 of amples, as it"islobvi;ous that any-dorm of cleaning appliancelcan be usedz V The ,HIELIIHGI" or using *the device will-he sinall mop 18 0 :withgaflexibleineck 82 in the evident from the foregoing description,
it will be-appreciated that windows, *ceilings, shelves and otheri' parts 10f a"building I and expeditiously' can be'ver'y thoroughly cleaned by means-of the device/with am'inimum-of exertion and inmost cases without fItis to -be understood;that ,the invention is not limited -to'3the particular detailstde scrlbed for the purpose of illustration Jbut includes modifications "which come "within the scope of the appended claims.
