Description

- E. D. TUBES CONCRETE'TIE CLIP Sept. 11, 1923.
Filed June 15. 1922 Patented Sept. 11, 1923.
WE!) S PAT CONCRETE TIE CLIP.
Application filed June 15, 1922. Serial No. 568,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARLD. Tunes, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Tie Clips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This, invention relates to clips for eonneeting transversely extending. reinforcing rods for concrete work, and has for its object to provide an improved form of clip of this kind which will securely hold the rods in proper relative position and which may be very quickly applied to said rods. Qther objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter de scribed in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of two crossed reinforcing rods for concrete work secured together with one form of tie clip made in accordance with this invention, and
Figure 2 is a similar view of two such rods connected by a modified form of tie clip.
Referring first to Figure 1 of the drawings. the reinforcing rods 2 and 3 are held securely in proper crossed position by a wire tie clip 1 which is preferably made of a single piece of wire folded at 4 upon itself, said fold coming at the end of the hook 5 at one end of the shank 6 of the clip. At the other end of said shank the free ends of the wire are spread apart to constitute prongs 7 at opposite sides of a fork or crotch 8. Said prongs '7 are inclined away from the plane of the shank 6 in a downward direction, as is also the hook 5. The extremities of the prongs 7 are bent upward at 9 forming spaced hooks 10 at the ends of the same. The two strands of wire constituting the shank 6 are prevented from spreading apart when the longitudinal rod 2 is engaged in the crotch 8 by a looped ofiset portion 11 formed on one of said strands and overlapping the other strand adjacent said crotch.
In assembling the clip on the rods, the transverse rod 3 is placed in the hooks 10 .hook 5 with saidlongitudinal rod, as indicated in solid lines, it is necessary to bow said shank and place it under tension which serves to securely hold said rods against relative movement.
The modified form of clip 12 illustrated in Figure 2 as applied to crossed. rods 13 and 14 is similar to the clip 1 of Figure 1 except that instead of the offset portion 1.1 for preventing the strands of the wire forming the shank 15 from spreading said strands are twisted about one another at 16. The hook 17 at one end of the shank corresponds to the hook 5 in Figure 1, and the spaced hooks 18 to the hooks 10 in the first form of the invention. The rods 13 and 14 are secured together in the same manner as already described in connection with the rods 2 and 3, said rod 14 engaging the hooks 18 and the rod 13 engaging said rod 14, the crotch 19 bctnwen the prongs 20 carrying the hooks 18, and the hook 17.
I claim 1. A clip of the character described comprising a shank, a hook on one end oi said shank, and a pair of spaced hooks on the other end oi the shank, there being a crotch between said spaced hooks to engage one of a pair of crossed rods which is also engaged by the hook on the remote end 0'! the shank, while the other rod is engaged between said spaced hooks and the first rod.
2. A clip of the character described comprising a shank. a hook on one end of said shank. a pair of spaced hooks on the other end of said shank. there being a crol'ch between said spaced hooks to engage one of a pair oi crossed rods which is also engaged by the hook on the remote end of the shank, while the other rod is engaged on opposite sides by the spaced hooks and the first rod, said shank and spaced hooks being formed of two strands of wire, and means tor retainingsaid strands from spreading apart at the crotch between said spaced hooks.
3. A clip of the character described comprising a shank, a hook on one end of said shank, a pair of spaced hooks on the other end of the shank there being a crotch between said spaced hooks to engage one of apair of crossed rods which is also engaged by the hook on the remote end of the shank. while the other rod is engaged on opposite sides by the spaced hooks and the first rod, said shank and spaced hooks being formed of two strands of wire, and an offset portion on one strand of the shank overlapping the other strand thereof for retaining said strands from spreading apart at the crotch between said spaced hooks.
4. A clip of the character described comprising a shank a hook on one end of said shank, a pair of spaced hooks on the other by the hook on the remote end of the shank,
while the other rod is engaged on opposite faces by the spaced hooks and the first rod, said hooks being arranged in such positions with respect to the shank that said shank is placed under tension when the clip is in place on the rods, whereby said rods are securely held in proper relative positions.
5. A clipojf the character described made of a single piece of wire folded upon itself to form a shank and a hook at one end of said shank consisting of two strands of the wire, and spaced hooks at the other end of the shank formed of single strands of the Wire, there being a crotch between said spaced hooks to engage one of apair of crossed rods which is also engaged by the hook on the remote end of the shank, while the other rod is engaged on opposite faces by the spaced hooks and the first rod, and means for retaining said strands of the shank from spreading apart at the crotch.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
EARL D. TUBES.
