HINGE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED W. MHLEN- BRUCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bergeneld, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Hinge, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description,

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinges, and it pertains more particularly to hinges especially adapted for use on freight car doors. Great expense has been incurred by railroad companies owing to the fact that when it is 1mpossible to open a freight car door on account of the platform or staging alongside of which the car is standing being too high, employees will remove the door from the car by tearing the door from its hinges and otherwise mutilating the door and car.

It is one of the primary objects of the present invention to so construct a hinge for freight car doors that in instances as above mentioned, the door may readily be removed from its hinges without mutilation of the car, door or hinges.

It is a further object of the invention to so construct a hinge that the door may be replaced without mutilation of the car, door or hinge.

It is a further object of the invention to so construct the hinge that the aforementioned objects may be expeditiously carried out.

With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which A Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Fig, 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1 with the hinge in closed position, and

Fig. 3 is a similar view with the hinge in open position.

Referring more particularly to the drawings the hinge comprises two leaf members 11 and 12, and said leaf members 11 and 12 are hingedly secured together at their rear edge as indicated by the reference character 13. The'leaf member 11 is provided with a plurality of spaced fingers 14, and

said spaced fingers 14 are curved in form. The leaf member 12 is likewise provided with a plurality of spaced fingers 15 so. arranged that when the leaf members 11 and 12 are brought together the fingers 15 will register or coincide with the fingers 14. Owing to the fact that the lingers 14 and 15 vare curved, a substantially circular passage 16 will be provided, which passage is adapted to receive the pintle of the other member of the hinge not shown in the present instance. .y

The `member 12 is secured to a car-door jamb, door or other suitable support, 17, by means of bolts or thelike, 18, and the member 11 is retained against movement relative to the member 12 by means ofa plurality of bolts or the like, 19, which have threaded engagement with the member 11, as at 20, and threaded enga-gement with the member 12, as at 21.

When it is desired to remove the car door from its hinges, it is only necessary to loosen the bolts 19, when the member 11 will be free to swing relative to th-e member 12 about its pivotal point 13, and will thus permit of the removal of the pintle of the hinge from the passageway 16.

When it is desired to again replace the door, it isk only necessary to move the member 11 into engagement with the member 12k and secure the same in such position by means of the bolts 19. After this has beenv done, the other member of the hinge is properly positioned and the pintle is inserted into the passageway 16 to make thehinge complete. 4

From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides al new and improved hinge which may be readily disassembled in order to permit of an easy removal of the door which the hinge is adaptn ed to support without mutilation ofthe hinge, door, lor member by which the hinge is carried.

What is claimed is:

1. A hinge strap comprising two members hingedly connected together, means for rigidly supporting one of said members, and means carried by the hinged member and engaging the rigidly supported member for vsecuring; the two members against movement ico relative to each other about their hinged connection.

2. A binge strap comprising two members hingedly connected together, means for rigidly supporting .one of said members, and meansI carried .by the hin-ged member .and engaging the rigidl7 Supported member for securing the two members against movement relative to each other about their hinged connection, said means comprisinga bolt 10 passing through and having threaded engagement with each of said pivoted members.
