To al] whom it may cow/cem.' n j Be it known that l, JOHANNES CRoNING, a subject of the German Republic, and resident of Hamburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Mortise Locks (for which applications for patent have been filed in Germany. March 22, 1919, Patent No. 337,487; in Holland, June 80, 1920, Patent No.
i 15,355; in Belgium, July 10, 1920, Patent No. 289,217; in England, July 8th, 1920, Patent No. 147,493; in France, July 8th, 1920, Patent No, 519,474; and in Switzerland. June 28th, 1920, Patent No. 89,518), of which the following is a specification.
Cylindrical locks which can be adjusted to fit doors of different thickness are known, but the encasing portion ofthe lock is in the form of a rectangular box and houses the cylindrical portion of the lock, which is `secured by escutcheons. The operation of mortising the door frame for the box shaped member of the lock entails `troublesome chisel work and the escutcheons of the lock cylinder are a frequent source of error. es-
pecially when they are made two-sided so as to act for two lock cylinders at the same time.
The removal of these drawbacks is the object of the present invention. The lock consists solely of two properly shaped interconnected cylinders of which the one lying transversely to the plane of the door is arranged in such a way that it can be fastened to a fianged guard cylinder prior to being inserted in the door, and is then screwed into a similar guard cylinder fixed on the opposite side of the door, and secured in position by the cylindrical tube which 40 lies in the plane of the door. In this way the lock and casing cylinder are securely prevented from being `unintentionally loosened. Moreover, the troublesome labour ouf-'chiseling out a mortise, as is necessary 5 in the case of box-shaped mortise locks, is
overcome by boring a couple of holes.
The subject of the invention is illustrated in the drawing.
Figure 1 shows a vertical section of one method of carrying out the invention.
Figure 2 is a section A-B of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a modification and Figure 4 the section C-D of Figure 3. rlhe door 1 is bored through horizontally Vand carries on the oneside-preferably the inner--the threaded flange 2, which is provided `with noses, wedges or'pins 3 to prevent it from turning. The threaded fiange 6, which is fixed to the cylindrical case 4 by the set screw 5,' is inserted from the opposite side of the door and screwed on to the flange 2, The cylindrical casing 4 consists of the strengthened central portion7 and the threaded members 8 and 9 on eitherside. The tumblers cylinders and their accessories for operating the bolt are housed in the flanges 2 and 6, while the central portion 7 of the lock case 4 serves to house the mechanism transmitting movement to the bolt. These and the tumbler cylinders are omitted in the drawing. `The set screw 5 provided in the flange 6 protrudes into the slot 10 of the threaded socket 9, so that the flange 6 can be screwed onto the casing 4, to a greater or smaller extent, in accordance with the thickness of the door, so as to hold it in the desired position, prior to being inserted in the door. The casing 4 is secured by the tube 11, introduced from the edge of the door, said tube screwing into the casing 4 and serving as a guide for the bolt. d
In the form shown in Figures 1 and 2, the' lianges 2 and 6 are provided with internal threads, and the cam pivot 12 for operating the bolt is eccentric in relation to the central point of the casing 4.

A mortise lock `consisting of a cylindrical lock casing having pockets and threaded ends, screw flanges engaging 1said threaded ends for compensating for different door thickness, said flanges closing said' pockets, a cylindrical bolt tube of smaller .diameter than said casing and screwed thereto at right angles, and means to secure one vof ,the flanges in adjusted position.
