To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM C. Srnow- BRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford City, in the county of Blackford and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gasoline Filters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a filter which is especially designed for use with internal combustion engines and has for its purpose to assure a clean supply of gasoline to the carburetor, the filter being interposed in the pipe line leading from the gasoline supply tank tothe carburetor.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient filter of this kind which can be readily installed, and which is so'constructed that it can be easily taken apart for cleaning, repairs, etc.
lVit-h the objects stated in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in'order that the same may be better understood reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

Referring to the drawing in detail it 'will be seen that 1 designates a hollow body having its upper portion open and having a groove situated in its lower wall so that the hollow body may be positioned ona support such as an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine. Suitable dust packing 2 1s situated in this groove so as to prevent the overheating of the body 1. series of spaced semi-circular staves 3 are arranged along the bottom of the body 1 and support a foraminous partition 4 which is preferably formed of two layers of screening which should be comparatively fine in mesh. It will be noted that this partition 4 divides the hollow body into an upper and a lower compartment. In the upper compartment a sponge 5 or any suitable absorbent mate rial is situated. An outlet nipple 6 is situated in one end wall of the body 1 adjacent through the upper port-ion of the partition 4 and extends into the interior of the lower cham ber. A suitable drain cock 7 is provided in the lower chamber adj acent the bottom thereof. A closure 8 is provided for the upper portion of the body 1 and a suitable gasket 9 will be interposed between this closure 8 and the body 1. This closure 8 will preferably, .be held in placeby bolts and nuts 10. An
inlet nipple 11 extends through the closure 8 and preferably throu h the center thereof. A distributer 12 is attac led to the lower face ofthe closure 8.so as to register withithe nipple 11. This di'stributer 12 is formed from a sheet of perforated metal-or other suitable material and is bent so as to be semi-circular in transverse cross sectionv while the ends thereof will be bent upwardly and termlnate a relatively short distance from the closure 8 so as to provide an over- Q flow outlet for thisdistributer.
The pipe leading from the gasoline supply tank will be attached to. the intake nipple l1 and the gasoline passing therethrough will drip through the various apertures provided in the distributer 12 and will then pass the sponge 5. While passing through the sponge 5'the. gasoline will be thoroughly cleansed of all foreign matter and will be free to pass through the foraminous partition 4. Any water which may bev contained in the gasoline after having passed through the sponge 5 will naturally,-through capillary attraction, run downwardly along the wires of the foraminous 'partitionrather than pass therethrough and will thusenter the lower chamber adjacent its lower portion-and thus it will be seen that the gasoline in the lower chamber will naturally at all times be in the upper portions thereof so as to pass through the outlet nipple 6 to the carburetor. Should the level of the Water become higher than the outlet nipple 6 the drain cock 7 may be opened so that the water may be drained from the lower chamber. It will also. be readily seen that by. i i
removing the closure 8 all the interior mechanism of the filter'may be readily removed and cleansed or replaced as may be desired,
