0. KONGSRUD BRAKE HEAD AND SHOE FOR RAILWAY CARS Filed Jan. 13 1922 OLE KO/YGS/W/D.
Patented Apr. 1?, i923.
area an OLE KONGSRUD, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
BRAKE HEAD ANDSHOE FOR RAILXVAY CARS.
Application filed January 13, 1922.
To aZZ toil/0m it may concern Be it known that I, OLE Konosnon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake Heads and Shoes for Railway (jars; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a brake head and brake shoe for railway car, which head is carried on the ends of the brake beam and the shoe thereof is adapted to contact with the peripheral surface of the wheel.
It is an object of this invention to provide a brake head of rugged structure which will not be easily broken in service and to provide the same with suitable shoe engaging means. It is a further object of the invention to provide a brake head having; large bearing surfaces for the shoe and to have longitudinal slots in said surface which are adapted to receive longitudinal ribs formed on the head-engaging surface of the shoe.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different vie vs, and in which- Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of the head with the shoe attached, a small portion thereof being shown in section;
F ig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l as indicated by the arrows; and
Fig. 3 is a. horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, a brake head 1 is shown having a. central projecting portion to its outer side in which is formed a recess 2 adapted to receive the brake beam in the usual manner. Arms 3 project at each side of the central portion and these arms are of heavy solid construction having longitudinal ribs extending along; each side thereof, which ribs are continued around the central portion having therein the opening 2. The head is provided with the usual opening 5 for receiving the hangs to the head by Serial No. 523,972.
rod. and a. transverse slot 6 extends across the central part of the head from the shoeengaging surface thereof to the opening 5. The head is also formed with a longitudinal slot 7 therethrough adapted to receive the shoe retaining key ,8 which is suitably curved to pass through the slot 7, the said slot being curved parallel to the shoe-engaging surface of the head. The head is also formed with longitudinally extending slots 4 centrally located in its shoe engaging surface, which slots extend from its outer ends inwardly to a plane spaced a short distance from the sides of the slot 6. A shoe 9 is provided of solid form curved to fit the outer. surface of the head and curved on its outer surface to contact the periphery of the wheel. This shoe has a transverse rib or projection 9 at each end thereof adapted to project slightly over the end of the head and the shoe is also provided with a central rib 9 at each side extending from the rib 9 inwardly towards the center thereof which ribs are adapted to fit in the slots 4 of the head. The ribs 9 and 9", it will be noted, form T-shaped projections or raised surfaces on the inner surface of a shoe, the cross arm of the T being formed by the ribs or projections 9 The shoe is also provided with a central transverse projection or tongue 10 of slightly less width than the width of the shoe, which projection is adapted to fit into the slot 6 of the head and which projection is provided with a longitudinal slot 11 extending therethrough, as shown in Fig. 3, adapted to receive the key 8.
When the head and shoe are assembled, as shown in Fig. 1. the parts will be held firmly in position, the shoe being connected the key 8. The parts will be mounted on the truck and brake beam in the usual manner. The shoe has a wide bearing surface on the head and is held against any appreciable movement relatively thereto by the ribs 9, 9 and 10. The parts can all be readily made and assembled and require practically no finishing WOTK. The structure provides a shoe and head of great strength and one which will withstand much rough usage.
it will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form" details and arrangement of the parts without departing" from. the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.
WVhat is claimed is:
1. A brake head having a central lug adapted to receive the brake beam and having a substantially solid arm extending at each side thereof, said arms having longitudinal slots therethrough to receive the shoe retaining key and also having slots extending longitudinally in the said engaging surface of said arms adapted to receive projecting ribs on the shoe.
2. A brake head having a central transverse opening in its shoe contacting surface and a longitudinally extending slot in said surface, and a shoe having a transverse tongue fitting in said opening and a longitudinally extending rib adapted to fit in said slot.
3. The structure set forth in claim 2, said head also having a longitudinal slot therethrough and said tongue having a slot therethrough in alinement therewith, and a shoe retaining key disposed in said latter slots.
l. The structure set forth in claim 2, said shoe contacting surface extending across said head at each side of said transverse opening and longitudinally of said head at each side of said slot throughout the length of said head.
5. A device of the class described comprising, a brake head having a recess extending transversely thereinto from its shoe contacting surface, said surface extending at each side of said recesses and longitudinally throughout the length of said head, shoe having a tongue projecting into said recess and contacting said head throughout said surface, and a key passing through said head and tongue for connecting said head and shoe.
6. A brake head having a central transverse opening therein on its shoe contacting surface and a slot extending longitudinally of said surface extending from one end thereof and terminating short of said transverse opening, a narrow slot extending longitudinally of the head and inwardly from said slot, ashoe having a central transverse tongue extending into said transverse opening in the head and a longitudinal rib extending into said first mentioned slot, said transverse tongue having an aperture therethrough adapted to receive a key disposed in said narrower slot in said head.
7 A brake head having thereon a body portion extending at each side of its center and having a comparatively large shoe contacting surface, said surface having longitudinally and transverse slots therein, a shoe having a surface contacting with said surface and provided with longitudinal and transverse projecting tongues adapted to seat, respectively in said slots.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
