ARTHUR HOHM'EISTER, OF CINCINNATI, OHEO. AfiSIGNOR TO THE JOHN DOUGLAS COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, Ol-LIG, A GGRPORATIGN OF OHIO.
BALL-COCK.
Application filed November 23, 1917.
To all whom it may concern ,Be it known that I, ARTHUR Horurmsrnn, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, in the county ot Hamilton and State of Ohio, have in proved ball cock construction in which 111-- creased efliciency' of closing action is attained over other ball cock constructions known to me.
A further obj eot is to produce a ball cock of simple, reliable and cheap construction, in which a minimum number of working parts are present and which may be quickly taken apart and put together to eflect repairs.
These and other objects are attained in the ball cock described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a flush tank having a ball cock embodying my invention mounted therein.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through a ball cock embodying my invention.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental longitudinal sectional view showing the parts in different positions from those illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental sectional view of my improved ball cock taken on the line H of Fig. 1, the parts being shown in positions to permit the entrance of water to a flush tank containing the ball cock.
My improved ball cock consists of a body 5 having a casing 6 at the upper end of a water admission standard 7, the interior of the casing forming a distribution chamber 8 into which water from standard 7 enters, a valve seat 9 at the upper end of standard 7 and within chamber 8, a cap 10 adapted to close the chamber, a flexible diaphragm 11 located between the cap and easing, a diaphragm operating plunger 12, a plunger operating lever 13, and discharge pipes let and 15 located in the bottom of the casing 6.

the flush tank by means of the usual. fastening means 16 which also connects the water pipe 17 with the standard 7. Cap 10 screws ontocasing 6 and clamps diaphragm 11 at its periphery against the top edge of easing 6. Valve seat 9 is provided with a concave or countersunk upper surface 18 against which the diaphragm is pressed by plunger 12. The lower end of plunger 12 is convex so as to cause diaphragm 11 to seat firmly against and into the valve seat. The upper end of plunger 12 is of uniform diameter and reciprocates within a guide 19 formed on the top of cap 10. Plunger operating lever 18 is pivotally mounted at a point 20 upon lugs 21 on the top of guide 19 and is provided with a plunger operating end 22 which is located at an angle to the main portion 23 of lever 13. In a lug 31 formed on lever 13 adjacent to pivot point 20, is mounted a set screw 32 which is adapted to be adjusted to engage guide 19 and to limit the downward movement of float stem 24: and the float attached thereto. This is for the two fold purpose oi. limiting the opening movement of diaphragm 11 so that it may be adjusted-for varying water pressures, as well as for the purpose of preventing the interference of float 25 and float stem 24 with the operation of release valve 29. When the water pressure is high the set screw 32 is adjusted to cause lever 13 to permit of but slight movement of plunger 12 and consequently but slight opening movement of diaphragm 11. Under low water pressure the screw may be adjusted to permit of greater opening movement of diaphragm 11. To main portion 13 the stem 2a of ball float 25 is attached in the usual manner. From the bottom of easing 6 a branch channel 26 is provided, a small pipe 27 being attached thereto and having its upper end located in an overflow pipe 28, so as to provide for the after-fill of the bowl as is usual. I have disclosed the usual form of flush release valve 29 and operating mechanism 30 which needs no detailed description.
In describing the operation of my improved construction, the tank will be assumed to be empty. The water entering standard 7 passes through seat 9, engages diaphragm 1.1 and after distributing itself throughout chamber 8, the discharge is ef- 'lected through pipes 141- and 15 from which it is di iarged beneath the surface oi the water reinain' in the tank This results in absolutely noiseless discharge of water from the v -vc. As the tank gradually fills, the float uses and causes lever 13 to press upon plunger 12, thereby flexing diaphragm 11 and c using it to be pressed against seat surface 18 to cut off the Water. During the time water is being admitted to the tank, the howl s being refilled with fresh vater through pipes 27 and 2S and as soon as the dia )lll'zWDl eng'apes surface 18 the afterr a m tin ceases.
It will he that in my improved coir strnction I have devised a hall cock which is of the most sin ple design, which may he qnichiy repaired, and which is capable of less noisy and mor reliable operation than other hall cocks known to me.
thus dcscrihed my invention,
a shalli'm' distrihui r its bottom an mission @01 scharge ports, a concave valve see t snrronn ring the admission port, a flexible diaphragm ii'orining the top of the distribution chamber a can covering the distrilmtion chan' )er and having agnide collar in alineinet with the valve seat, a plunger in the glide collar and having a convex face, a lever adapted to reciprocate the plunger and a float attached, to the lever.
in tes -D'lOIlX whereof l. have hereunto ea'ihscriheti my name this st (lay of November. i917.
