VALVE-LIFTER.
Application filed June 5, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN Consr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of llayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in valve lifters.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a valve lifter so constructed that the same can be applied to the valves for the purpose of raising the same against the tension of the springs.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of an implement such as above referred to including a pair of pivoted jaws designed to engage movable parts of a valve or the like together with means for moving said jaws to and from each other.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a bearing surface between the said jaws at the point of pivoting which eliminates friction and permits of the ready movement of the same.
A further object of the invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use, and readily operated.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application and in which;

Figs. 7 and 8 show a modified form of the invention in which the operating screw is disposed in a vertical plane.

proved valve lifter which comprises a body portion 11 having a horizontal stationary jaw 12 formed at one end thereof and a rearward extension 13 provided with a longitudinal bearing 11 formed upon the opposite end thereof.
A vertical extension 15 projects upwardly between the jaw 12 and bearing 1 1 and is 7 formed with a vertically disposed elongated slot 16 surrounded by a bearing rib 17.
The movable jaw is shown at 18 and engages the before described bearing rib 17.
A pivot member 19 extends through an aperture 20 provided in the movable jaw 18 and passes through the slot 16.
A wing nut 21 is threaded upon the end of the pivot member 19 and engages a hearing rib 22 which corresponds to the before mentioned bearing rib 17, but which is dis posed upon the opposite side of the extension 15.
Through the medium of this nut 21 and a washer 23 which is interposed between the rib 22 and said nut, the friction between the jaws 12 and 18 can be regulated to any desired degree.
The aw 18 is provided with a depending extension 24 formed at its lower end with a lateral flange 25 which constitutes a bearing surface for the reduced and rounded end 26 of a threaded rod 27, which has threaded engagement with the internal thread of the bearing 14.
This threaded rod 27 is provided with a suitable hand grip 28 by means of which the same can be actuated longitudinally of the bearing 1-1 for the purpose of moving the jaws 12 and 18 to and from each other.
As shown in the drawing the jaw 12 is provided with a forked extension 29 designed to receive the stem of a valve (not shown in the drawings), while the jaw 18 is provided with a flat extension 30 designed to engage the under side of the spring through which the valve stem passes (but which likewise is not shown in the drawings).
After the device has been positioned as above referred to the inward movement of the rod 27 forces the jaws 12 and 18 apart and obviously raises the spring as desired.
Referring particularly to Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing, the structure is similar to the foregoing with the exception that the member 27 is disposed in a vertical plane and is threaded in the bearing 14 formed upon the upper end of the member 15. The flange 25 is curved as shown and disposed in the path of the screw 27 in the manner previously disclosed. By this arrangement the device will occupy less room while in operation, and avoid interference with the side of the car or adjacent portions of the frame.
While the implement is used especially in connection with valves, it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to said use only but may employ the implement in any ca pacity in which the various parts thereof will operate.
It should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims,
without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and what I desire to protect by Letters Patent is;
1. In a device of the character described, a body portion, a stationary forked jaw at one end of the body portion, a vertical slotted member extending upwardly from the body portion, a jaw pivotally and slidably supported in the slotted member and hav ing a depending member, and a threaded member in and extending parallel with said body portion engaging the depending portion of said pivoted jaw.
2. A tool of the kind set forth comprising a body member having two legs arranged at an angle with respect to each other, a fork formed at the free end of one leg, the other leg being slotted, a bell crank lever pivoted to the slotted leg of the body member and having one leg complemental to the forked leg of the body provided with a terminus adapted to engage beneath a spring, the other leg of the bell crank depending and terminating adjacent the body portion, a screw member in threaded relation with the body member engaging the depending leg of the bell crank providing a means to effect separation of the free ends of the levers.

In a device such as described, the combination of a body portion having a stationary jaw provided with a forked terminus at one end thereof, a bearing at its opposite end and a vertical extension disposed between said jaw and bearing, said extension having a slot provided therein, a bear ing rib surrounding said slot, a movable aw engaging the bearing rib, a pivot member passing through said movable jaw and slot and held therein against displacement, an extension formed upon the movable jaw, a bearing flange provided upon said extension, and a rod threaded in said bearing and engaging the bearing flange for moving the jaws to and from each other upon the movement of said rod in opposite directions within said bearing.
4:. A tool of the kind set forth, comprising a body member having two legs arranged at an angle with respect to each other, a fork formed at the free end of one leg, a bell crank lever pivoted to the other leg of the body member and having a fork at its free end, and means carried by the body member and engaging the bell crank lever to effect the separation of the forks for the purpose specified.
