To all whom it may concern Be it known that. I, CARL J. SUNDEL a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible High Chairs-of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a convertible article which may be used practically for the service of children, or if desired, so that it can be employed by them as atoy, or in play, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a highly useful article, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, and eflicient in operation, which can be used practically as a high chair or a baby carriage, from one form to another of which devices it can be readily and quickly converted; 'or if desired, it can be constructed, of proper size and material, and be used by children as a toy for dolls, in which event, the same construction and convertibility will be maintained.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

Referring now more particularly to 1 to i inclusive of thedrawings, it will be seen and understood that the supporting .frame of the device includes two pairs of spaced apart supporting members, each pair consistingof two bars 10 and 11 crossed a little below their longitudinal middles and.-
pivotally connected together by means of a rod 12 which extends from one ofthe supporting members to the other. That portion of the bars 10 below their pivots 12 constitutes the. front legs of" the chair, and that portion of said bars 'above their pivots 12 constitutes a portion of the back of the device. That portion of the bars 11 located below their pivots 12 constitutes the rear legs of the device, while the upper portions of said bars constitute the upper front part of the supporting frame.
The parallel bars 10 are braced near their lower ends by means of a transverse rod or bar 13 and the bars 11 are similarly braced near their lower ends by means of a like connection. 1 1. The side members 26 are transversely united just below the lower crosspicce 27 by means of a rod 29 on which are loosely mounted at their upperends a pair of bars 30 which are similarly mounted at their lower ends on a cross-rod 31 which is mounted at each of its ends in a bar 32 pivotally mounted on the lower portion of each of the supporting bars 11. Pivotally connected to each of the bars 32 at the inner end thereof is a link 34: which extends upwardly and .is pivotally secured at itsupper end to the inner surface of the supporting bar 10. adjacent thereto at a point near the lower end of the back of the device.
Pivotally secured at one of its ends to the upper portion of each. of the supporting members 10 and extended horizontally and forwardly therefrom is an arm rest rail 36 each of which is in telescopic engagement with another arm rest rail 37 each of which is pivotally mounted at its front end on the upper portion of one of the supporting members'll and is provided with. a longitudinally extended slot 38 to receive a screw 39 seated in the member 36 and having on its outer portion a thumb or set nut 40 to be used for fixing the telescopic members or rails 36 and 37 together in the desired position.
Located between the upper portion of the supporting members 11 at a suitable distance below the rails 37 thereon is the front portion of a platform all which is pivotally connected to the members 11 at its side edges H and has at the rear portion of each of its side edges a lateral projection 42 to engage a slotted link 43 one end of which is pivotally connected to the upper portion of each of the supporting members 10 and by preference by means of the pivot rod 25 which supports the back rest of the chair or device.

mg a communicating opening 57 at about itsmiddle for the reception of headed projections 58 on each end of a roller 59 which is located transversely on the rear upper portion of the back rest between the plates and has secured thereto one end of the top 60 of a canopy, which top is provided at each of its sides with downwardly hanging portions 61 as is clearly shown in F igs. 5 and 6 of the drawings for closing the sides of the body of the carriage.
Pivoted at its ends on the projections 58 of the roller or bar 59 is a yoke 62, the upper portion 68 of which is adapted to extend transversely with respect to the upper portion of the back rest and to be supported in an upright-position so as to hold the top 60 of the canopy at a suitabledistance from said back rest. The side members of the yoke are provided with ofi'set portions 64: to rest on the inner portions of the handles 28 as is clearly shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 7 of the drawings. At a suitable distance from the front end of the top 60 of the canopy the same has secured to its lower surface a transverse bar 65 to each end of which is secured on its front and rear surfaces a plate 66, each of which is provided with an upright extension 67, thus forming a pair of parallel spaced apart extens ons at each of the ends of the, bar 65 which extend upwardly and outwardly therefrom, as is clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing.

When the canopy is in its operative position, it will be understood that the top edge of the table or tray 49 which forms a foot rest 'or' closure for the front end of the carriage body. At its front end the top 60 of the canopy is provided with a number of spaced apart straps 71 which may be secured at their lower ends to buttons 72 on the lower surface of the front part of the seat 41 the front end of which meets the lower end or edge of the table or tray 49 when the same is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drznvings.

To prevent the possibilityof the supporting members 10 and llbeing accidentally moved toward each other at their upper portions. it is obvious that the thumb nuts 40 can be tightened on. the screws 39 so as to hold the arm rest rails 36 and 37 in their extended positions as shown by continuous lines in Fig. 3 of' the drawings. It is manifest that should the child fall asleep Whenthe device is used as a high chair,'said device can be converted from the high chair form to the reclining or baby carriage form without disturbmg or uwaking the child.

As the canopy is detachably secured to the back rest of the device and also detachably'supported on the carriage body by means of the supporting arms 68 and is detachably connected to the platform, it is manifest that it can be easily removed,

In a device of the class described, the combination with a main frame including a pair of spaced apart side members pivotally and transversely connected together between their ends, each of said members consist ing of two bars crossed at their pivots, of a platform horizontally and pivotally mounted on and between the front upper portion of one pair-of said bars and extended toward the rear upper parts of the other bars, a lateral projection onthe rear part of each side of theplatforn'i, a jointed and 4 slotted connection engaging each of said projections and pivotally connected at their ends to the bars of each ofthe side mem bers, a back rest pivotally mounted between the rearwardly and upwardly extended portionof a pair of sald bars, and connections loosely uniting the lower portlon of the back rest to the lower rear portion of a pair of said bars.
