APPLICATION FILED JAN. 31. 19MB.

Application filed January 31, 1918.
To all n; ham it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK'MUENNIOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in *Window-Sash Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inrentiom such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
The invention relates to a window sash fastener and more particularly to the class of combined safety window sash fasteners and holders. i
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the sashes of a window may be adjusted for the opening thereof to a limited extent, either by raising the lower sash or lowering the upper sash. or both of said sashes may be moved to open position for rentilating purposes and when in open position will be secured to prevent further opening thereof from the outside of the window, thus eliminating the possibility of an unscrupulous person gaining an entrance through the window, or such person unfastening the sashes for the purpose of further opening the same the window.
Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character which is extremely simple in construction. readily and easily applied to the meeting rails of the upper and lower sashes of a window, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its operation, strong, durable and secure when in use, and also inexpensive to manufacture. With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully descrlbed, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of the meeting rails of a pair of upper and lower sashes showing the fastener constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto. .Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the upper and lower sashes showing the same adjusted to Specification of Letters Patent.

open position, the section being through one part of the fastener.
Fig. is a perspective view of the chain member of the fastener detached from the window sash.
Fig. d is a perspecti e view of the keeper member of the fastener showing the top plate elevated from the base plate.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail A designates a portion of the meeting rail of the lower sash and B a portion of the meeting rail of the upper sash, the rails-being of the ordinary well known construction, the sashes being adapted for slidable mounting within a window franc as usual. On the meeting rails A and B of the sashes is mounted the combined fastener and holder hereinafter fully described.
The combined fastener and holder comprises locking device adapted to be mounted on the upper sash and a keeper derice adapted to be mounted on the lower sash. The locking device comprises a base plate 5 which is preferably secured to the upper side of the meeting railB of the upper sash centrally thereof through the medium of screw fasteners 6 which are passed through suitable holes in the plate and engaged in the meeting rail. Permanently secured in the plate 5 is an upstanding eye or staple T which has connected thereto one end of a chain 8 which is of the required length and carries at its opposite end a cross bar 9 forming a latch member, the bar being formed with a main center stem or shank 10 provided with an eye 11 with which is loosely connected the chain 8. The keeper device comprises a casing or housing including top and bottom plates 12 and 13 respectively, the top plate being superimposed upon the bottom plate and the plates held together in any suitable manner, preferably by fasteners 1% which are passed through suitable registering holes in the top and bot tom plates and are engaged in the meeting rails A of the lower sash for the fastening of the keeper device thereon centrally of the same at the upper side thereof adjacent to the locking device. The top plate 12 is upwardly bulged medially thereof to form a raised center portion 15 providing between the bottom plate 13 and the top plate 12 a space 16 co-eXtensive with the raised por-,
tion 15 01": said top plate. Formed centrally in the raised portion 15 is a" longitudinal slot 17 through which is adapted to be inserted the cross bar 9 constituting the latch member, the cross bar 9 being fastened in the keeper device in a manner presently described.
Formed in the under side or inner face of the raised portion 15 on opposite sides of the slot 17 therein and at right angles thereto are channels or grooves 18 constituting seats 1 01 the cross bar 9 when the same is turned at right angles to the slot 17 after its insertion through the latter for the securing of the latch member in the keeper device. The cross bar 9 is inserted through the slot 17 by registering the same therewith, and on the passing of the bar 9 through the slot into the space 16 the said bar is turned at right angles to the slot to engage in the channels or grooves 18 to; be seated therein. The length of the chain 8 when the cross bar 9 is engaged with the keeper device Will limit the opening of'the sashes relative to each other as the said sashes of the Window may he opened a distance corresponding to the length or the chain and further adjustment of these sashes is prevented.
Cut and struck from the bottom plate 13 of the keeper device are securing cars 19 which are located near diagonally opposite corners or" said plate and serve to secure resilient leaf springs 20 thereon, the inner free ends of the springs being upwardly bent in the space 16 to provide snap fingers adapted to lie crosswise of the grooves or channels 18 in the raised portion 15 of the top plate 12 so as to retain the cross bar 9 of the latch member engaged in the channels or grooves 18 When the said bar is turned crosswise of the slot 17 and in this manner the cross bar isfir'mly retained in the keeper device to prevent the accidental detachment or" the cross bar 9 from said keeper device.
nember from the outside of the Window so as to tree the Wll'lClOW sashes to permit the opening thereof by a malicious or unscrupulous person, thereby avoiding the possibility of gaining access through the window from the outside of the same,
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
V'Jhat is claimed is The herein described Window fastener comprising a chain adapted tobe attached at one end to one sash and having a latch bar centrally connected to its other end; and a keeper adapted to be attached to the other sash and comprising a top plate raised at its inidlength and longitudinally slotted in its raised )ortion said nortion also havin 3 L #3 upstrncl: channels intersecting the center of the slot, a bottom plate underlying the top plate and having rip-bent ears at diagonally opposite corners, leaf springs secured t ieir outer ends, under said ears and with their in: er ends free and constituting fingers bcri e normally upward against the raised per ion of the upper plate alongside its slot and lying across its channels, and fastening means passing through both plates into the last name-d member.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence or" two Witnesses.
FRANK MUENNICH.
