Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Dec. 30, 1919.
Application filed December 15, 1917. Serial No. 207,235.
To all whom it may concern:
e itknown that I, JOHN Klnwioz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of- Suil'olk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Driving and Stopping Mechanism, of which the followinp; description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a Specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to driving and stopping mechanism of that type adapted to drive a machine that is constructed to per form a predetermined cycle of operations and to bring said machine to rest in a predetermined position when the cycle of operations is completed. The object of the invention is to provide a novel driving and stopping mechanism which is constructed so that when the machine is to be started the driving mechanism will be held positively inoperative until the stop device has been entirely released and will be rendered operative to start the machine in operation by the releasing movement of the stop device.
My invention is adapted for use in driving; a great variety of machines that are constructed to perform a predetermined cycle of operations and then to be brought to rest. As illustrative of one machine of this type I would refer to a buttonhole sewing machine and I have herein chosen to illustrate the invention as it would be applied to such a machine, although, as stated above, the invention is equally applicable to other machines.
In order to give an understanding; of the invention I have, therefore, illustrated it as it might be applied to a buttonhole sewing machine, and in the drawings, Figure l is a side view of a sewing; machine which is controlled by my improved device;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the pants in the position they assume when the machine is at rest;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the driving'clutch;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line fr-4:, Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the parts in the position they assume when the stop device is being released;
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the lever for actuating the controlling member.
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7,'Fig. 1;
8 is a section on the line 8-8, Fig. 4.
In F ig 1 I have indicated generally at 1 a buttonhole sewing machine of the type shown in United States Patent No. 1,188,942, dated June :27, 1916, and which comprises stitch-forming mechanism for forming the edge stitches over a buttonhole. Said stitchforming mechanism includes the upper reciprocating eye-pointed needle 3 and an under thread mechanism indicated generally at at, said stitch-forming mechanism being actuated from a driving shaft 2. The feeding of the work during the formation of the buttonhole and some of the other operations of the machine are controlled from a feed cam 5 which is rotatably mounted in the bed of the machine.
Inasmuch as the present invention relates solely to the driving; and stopping mechanism by which the movements of the shaft 52 are controlled, I do not think it necessary to give any further description of the buttonhole sewing machine 1.
The shaft 2 is driven from a driving pulley 6, and said pulley is rendered operative or inoperative by the movement of an actuating device 1 1, movement of said device toward the pulley causing the pulley to be operative and movement in the opposite direction causing the pulley to be inoperative. This driving pulley 6 may be a pulle fast on the shaft onto and from which a driving belt is shifted, in which case the member 1% would take the form of a belt shipper, or said pulley may be loose on the shaft and may be connected thereto by a suitable clutch device which is rendered operative or inoperative by the member 1 1, in
which case said member 14 becomes a clutch actuator. In the construction shown the pulley 6 is loosely mounted on the shaft and is adapted to be connected thereto by means of a friction clutch which comprises an expanding clutch ring 7 which is secured to and rotates with the driving pulley 6, said ring being adapted to be expanded into clutching engagement with the interior clutch surface 8 formed on a clutch member 9 which is fast on the shaft 2. The clutch ring 7 is expanded by means of a clutch-expanding member 10 situated between the ends of the clutch ring and journaled in the pulley 6. This clutch-expanding member has an arm 11 fast thereon Which carries at its end a screw 12 that is adapted to be engaged by a clutchactuating cone 13 slidably mounted on the shaft 2. The movement of the cone toward the pulley causes the cone surface thereof to act on the screw 12 and thus turn the lever 11 in a direction to expand the clutch into operative engagement with the clutch surface 8, while movement of the cone 13 away from the driving pulley will release the clutch. The cone clutch 13 is given its movement in one direction or the other by the clutch actuator 14: having a forked end 15 which is received in a groove 16 formed in the clutch cone.
At the end of each cycle of operations the shaft 2 is brought to rest in a predetermined position by means of a stop device shown as a stop cam 17 fast on the shaft 2 and a cooperating stop member 20 which is yieldingly carried by an arm 21 fast on a controlling member 22 in the form of a rod slidably mounted in suitable bearings 23 formed on the machine. The stop cam 17 is formed with the eccentric or cam surface 13 and with the stop notch 19 which is adapted to receive the stop member 20 when the machine is at rest and the stop member 20 is carried by a plunger 26 slidably mounted in the arm 20 and backed by a spring 27. While the machine is in operation, the controller 22 is in a position to hold the stop member 20 at one .side of the eccentric portion 18 of the stop cam and against the concentric portion thereof, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 7, but when the cycle of operations has been. completed, the controller 20 is moved into the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby moving the stop member 20 in the direction of the axis of the shaft 2 and in position to engage the eccentric portion 18 of the stop cam 17. The stop cam has a low portion 2a which is of the same diameter as the concentric portion 25 thereof, and when the stop member is moved toward the stop cam, as above described. at the end of the cycle of operations. said stop member passes onto the low portion 2a; of the cam and thence onto the the eccentric portion 18 thereby producing a braking effect until the notch 19 comes opposite the end of the stop member when the latter swings into the notch, thereby positively bringing the shaft to rest. This return movement of the controller 22 as well as the movement which causes the stop member 20 to enter the notch 19 is secured from a pulling spring 28 which is fastened at one end to the frame of the machine, as shown at 29, and the other end of which is secured to a pin 30 extending from a collar 31 fast on the controller 22. The spring 28 is situated at a slight inclination, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, so that it not only pulls downwardly on the arm 30 and thus tends to turn the controller 22 in a direction to cause the stop member 20 to enter the notch 19, but it also tends to pull the controller in a direction to carry the stop member axially toward the stop cam 17.
The shaft 2 is set in operation by forcing the controller 22 in a direction to carry the arm 21 and stop member 20 laterally out of engagement with the stop cam 17, and thismay be done by hand or by any suitable device. The mechanism herein shown is so constructed that when the controller is thus moved into position to carry the stop member laterally out of engagement with the stop cam, the actuator 14:, whether it operates a clutch or is in the nature of a belt shipper, will be held inoperative until the stop member is entirely free from the stop can'nand then said actuator will become operative so that there will be no tendency to start the shaft 2 in rotation until after the stop member is entirely released from the stop cam. The actuator 1 is carried by a sleeve 32 which is slidably mounted on the controller 22, said sleeve being yieldingly connected to the controller by means of a pulling spring 33, one end of which is fartened to the sleeve 32 and the other end of which is fastened to the collar 34- that is fast on the controller. The sleeve 32 has a latch member 35 pivoted thereto at 36, said latch member being formed with a shoulder 37 which is adapted to engage an abutment herein shown as a rib 38 forming part of the frame of the machine when the clutch actuator 15% is moved into a position to render the clutch inoperative. The latch 35 will thus hold the clutch in its inoperative position. lVhen the controller 22 is moved in a direction to carry the stop member 20 laterally out of engagement with the stop cam, as shown in Fig. 5, the clutch actuator 14- will remain stationary due to the engagement of the latch 35 with the abutment 38 and the spring 33 will thus be placed under tension. Just as the stop member 20 becomes free from the stop cam 17, the latch 35 is released from the abutment, and when this occurs the spring 33 moves the sleeve 32 thereby to carry the actuator 1 1 toward the pulley and to throw the clutch into operation. This clutch-actuating move ment of the clutch actuator, however, does not occur until. after the stop member is entirely free from the stop cam, and there is thus no overlapping of operations between the release of the stop cam and the engagement of the clutch. In the present embodiment of the invention I make use of the stop-releasing movement of the arm 21 to disengage the latch 35 from the abut ment. n
Upon referring to Figs. 1 and 7 it will be seen that the bottom of the notch 19 is at a greater radial distance from the center of the shaft 2 than the portion 25 of the stop cam and consequently when the stop mem- Ell) ber 20 has been carried laterally out of the notch 19, the pulling action of the spring 28 will turn the controller 22 slightly so as to bring the stop member against the portion 25, as seen in dotted lines Fig. 7. This slight upward movement of the arm 21 from the position shown. in Fig. 1 to that it occupies when the stop member engages the portion 25 is made use of to release the latch The latch 35 hasrigid therewith a bracket 39 in which is adjustably mounted a stop screw 40, said screw being situated over the arm 21 and being adjusted so that when the arm 21 is in the position shown in Fig. 1 and the latch 35 is in operative engagement nism will be positively held inoperative until the stop device is entirely released so that there will be no tendency of the driving mechanism to start the driving shaft in operation while the stop motion is still operative.
Further, it will be seen that in the device herein shown, the releasing movement of the stopmotion is made use of to render the driving l'IlGCllEtlliSlll effective.
I have above stated that the controlling member 22 might be moved into position to release the stop device by any suitable means. Where the device is used for controlling the shaft which drives the stitchforming mechanism of a buttonhole sewing machine, I propose to control the movements of the controller 22 from the main cam 5. 11 is an elbow-lever pivoted to the frame at 420, one arm of said lever being forked and having engagement with the pin 30 and the other arm also being forked and having engagement with the offset end -12 of a lever 43 which is pivotally mounted on a stud ii. The front end of the lever 4:8 is situated over a pin 1-5 which is mounted in the frame of the sewing machine for vertical movement, and the lower end of the pin is adapted to be actuated by a cam portion 456 formed on the main cam 5 of the machine. When the high portion of the cam a6 passes under the pin 45, the latter is raised thereby raising the front end of the lever and depressing the rear end thereof. This movement of the lever 43 turns the bell crank ll in a direction to move the controlling member 22 into the position shown in Fig. 5 from that shown in Fig. 2. The controlling member will be held in this position so long as the high portion of the cam 4L6 engages the pin, butwhen the end 47 of the high portion passes under the pin 45, then said pin will drop, thus allowing the controller to be carried into the position shown in Fig.2 and the stop member 20 to be brought into operative engagement with the stop cam.
In the buttonhole sewing machine shown in the patent referred to No. 1,188,942, the main cam 5 is set in operation thereby to cut the buttonhole before the shaft 2 which op erates the stitch-forming mechanism is set in operation, and thus the movement ofthe cam 5may be readily made use of to control the movement of the controller 22, but the particular means by which the controller 22 is actuated is not essential to the invention.
While I have illustrated the invention herein as it might be applied to a buttonhole sewing machine, yet I would statethat it can be equally well used in connection with other machines that have a stop motion and a driving mechanism cooperating to drive the machine and to bring it to rest after a predetermined cycle of operations.
