ARTICLE OF FURNITURE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELLA A. KENDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in San Francisco, California, have invented Art-1 cles of Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to provide a structure consisting of a novel combination of parts whereby it is adapted to serve both as a book-case and as a bureau, the arrangement being such that either of these parts may be covered or concealed by suitable doors while the other is exposed and availabl for use.

It is further desired to provide an article of furniture of the above noted, type which shall be substantial in construction and ornamental in appearance, at the same time being convenient to use and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

These objects and other advantageous ends attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section illustrating a modification of my invention.

In the above drawings 1 represents the base portion of an article of furniture comprising my invention which is preferably supported above the floor by legs 2 and has attached to or mounted on its sides 3, a top 4 and a back 5 whereby an upright boxlike structure is formed which is open in its front face. Vertical partitions 6 divide the space within this structure into two vertically elongated spaces 7 on either side of a central space 8 and said spaces 7 are in turn sub-divided by a series of horizontal partitions or shelves 9 whereby they are adapted to serve as book-containing cases.

The central space 8 is likewise sub-divided by a horizontal partition 10 preferably at Specification of Letters Patent.

a point about two-fifths of its vertical length above the base 1 and below this partition it is provided with drawers 11 and 12 after the manner of a bureau. The upper and larger part of the compartment 8 above the partition 10 has mounted at its rear portion, preferably against the back 5, a mirror 18 preferably, though not necessarily, occupying its entire back surface. The top of the partition 10 is formed to serve as a table so that it with the drawers 11 and 12 and the mirror constitute the bureau portion of my invention.

The front portions of the base 1 and top 4. are provided with parallel transverse guide- Ways 14 for the reception of two pairs of slidings doors 16-l6 and 1717 so formed that the latter oair may be moved in front of the book-case spaces 7 respectively so as to expose the bureau portion. On the other hand with the doors 17 in front of the bureau portion of my invention, the second pair of doors 16 may be moved in front of them so as to expose and give access to the books in the compartments or spaces 7 while closing or concealing the bureau portion.

It is to be understood that the doors as well as the top, base and sides are preferably formed with ornamental moldings, etc, and that the doors are preferably glazed with leaded, colored or other ornamental glass panes or windows, preferably more or less opaque so as to conceal the structure or objects behind them.

From the above description it will be noted that my invention is particularly adapted for use in situations where it is necessary to economize space, since it consists of a unitary structure itprovides a double book-case, and a bureau in a minimum space. Moreover by the use of the doors 17 the bureau may be effectually concealed when not required for use so that the structure as a whole has the appearance of a relatively large ornamental book case ;it being noted that the said doors are preferably of the same width as the doors 16, so that they may be moved to lie one over the other without projecting. Obviously the doors 16 may be hinged to the sides 3 without departing from my invention as shown in Fig. 5 if this be preferred to the sliding construction shown in Figs. 1 to -inclusive.
