Description

1. T. WILLIS.
SLICiNG MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 12. 1919.

WITNESS:
INVENTOR. A
' BY /f z A TTORNE Y.
rrnn sgr-Arts rar i.:
JOSEPHUS T. WILLIS, OF MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI.
To all @07mm t may concern: f Be it known that I, JosErHUs T. WiLLIs, va citizen of the United States7 residing at Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi,.have invented certain new vand useful Improvements in `Slicing- Machines, of which the following is a speciiication. y 7 This invention'relates to cutters for meats, vegetables and the like, and more especially to those which reciprocate ;A and the object of the Vsame is to produce a machine or 1mplement for kitchen use by means of which meat such as bacon or sausage or Vvegetables such as potatoes may be cut'into slices or the slices thereof bisected.
A further object is to providea Vmachine of this kind wherein an ordinary mea-t or bread knife can be used or a iiXed blade, the former moving through the article being cut and the latter being stationary and the article moving with reference thereto.
Details are set forth in the4 following specification and claims, and attention is drawn to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view and Fig. 2 a side elevation of one form of this invention.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof and Fig. 4 an end view.
Fig. 5 is a cross section showing part of the same structure, but with the use of a stop block, whereby an ordinary tablelmife blade may be used as the cutter.
Fig. 6 is a perspective detail of a part of the block and the filler sheets or strips.
The bed 1 is by preference a block of wood or the like notched in one end as at 2 and carrying upon its upper surface a track composed of two L-shaped rails 3 running lengthwise of the bed and spaced from each other about the width of the notch. -Bel tween one end of these rails is a stop block 4 fixed on the bed. At their other ends these rails are carried upward into split coils 5 which stand on opposite sides of the notch 2 and are intended for the removable insertion of a blade 6 whose cutting edge 7 when in place stands about over the inner end of the notch 2 as seen in Fig. 3. Coacting with the structure thus far described is a base block 10 and a series of filler sheets or strips 11 of paper, cardboard or the like, thesebeing of a size to iitV closely betweenvthe rails and between the stop block 4 and the inner end of the notch 2, and the base block 10 be ing of? a size te rest upon their, and te at also Specification of Letters Patent.
Yvided with` outstanding shown) is employed.
Patented oct. a, 191e.
Application filed March 12, 1919. Serial No. 282,067.
in place as seen in Fig. 5. The upper face of Y the base Vblock is by preference corrugated longitudinally as shown at 12. In Fig. 5 is also shown a stop block 13 corrugated on its under face as at 14 andthis'may be sometimes employed as described below.
It will be noted that the Trails 2have in.- wardly struck tongues 9 which engage in the rear of the base vblock lOand also the filler strips 11 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 whereby the base block and filler stripswill beheld .against ldisplacement over the notch 2. It .will further be noted that the blade is provlugs Gf these lugs engaging `forward of the f split'coils 5 and preventing `rearward displacement of the blade when an article .beingcut is drawn across` its upper surface.
In the use of this device for cutting vegetables, as for instance potatoes, the blade is inserted in the split coils 5 and is held iX- edly but removably. The base block l0 is then placed between the two rails 3, and beneath it are inserted filler strips 1l suiicient in number to bring the upper face of this base block up nearly to a line flush with the upper edges of the rails 3. The potato is now laid upon the corrugated surface 12 of this block and movedl quickly across the blade 6. The result is that the cutting edge 7 of the blade severs a slice off the bottom of the potato, and the slice passes beneath the blade and drops into the notch 2. The potato is now retracted and again moved forward, and a second slice follows the rst excepting that it has none of the potato peeling elsewhere than around its edge, the first slice having been cut off the exterior of the potato. The latter is now rapidly reciprocated along the corrugated surface of the block with the result that it is lquickly cut into slices which fall through the notch into a receptacle in case the bed is mounted upon or above such a receptacle as will be clear.
When the device is t0 be used for slicing articles which are already thin, as for instance a slice of bacon, the blade 6 is removed and an ordinary knife blade (not The base block 10 and its Jiller strips are again used, but the top block is corrugated on its face 14 and is now employed as shown in Fig. 5. The
Vstrip of bacon or the like is laid upon the moved longitudimtlly over the upper edges of the rails 3 and it Willslice or out quite ,a thin slice of bacon 'into two yet "thinner slices in a manner which will be clear.
