CASTING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that we, (Jr-mums Peon and LEO FRANK N() CK,-lO0tll citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, countyof Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve.- ments in Casting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
Our invention relates to casting apparatus and more particularly to a type thereof having the mold cavities formed by a plastic composition which apparatus is particularly adapted for use in the production of what is known as finished castings.
In the production of finished castings, it is essential not only to securev accuracy in ,the dimensions of the casting produced, but to have the finish of the castings smooth and the dimensions thereof accurate, and
uniform in all castings made. Such castings ordinarily, are made in large numbers and when drawn from the pattern require little or no machine finishing excepting that incidental to the removaliof the sprue and, sometimes, the drilling of holes. In the process of producing the mold for makingthese castings we have been able to guard againstthe presence of fins at the parting between the mold parts, when bi-part molds are used; to provide for the production of a number of castings in a single mold; and to control the (hill of the casting sons not to interfere with the flow of the molten metal through the ingate of the mold. The apparatus of our present invention is designed to so control the molten metal as to avoid all likelihood of dross, or othep. impurities, entering the mold cavities, thus avoidin the presence of either concealed or superficial defects in the castings.
lVe secure these results by providing the molding apparatus, which term in this application includes as a part thereof the'mold itself, having, a supplemental innate of such capacity that when the metal is poured thereinto, .dross will accumulate in this ingate and only clean metal will flow to the gate cavityand the mold cavity. We have found in actual practice that the best resuit can be secured by forming lhconstriction either in the main ingate to the mold, or in Specification of Letters Patent Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed January 5, 191?. Serial No. 140,710.
the supplemental ingate, so as to retard the flow of the metal momentarily and permit the Stratification, or separation, of the clean metal and the tll0-, the constricted portion of the ingate forming an automatic skimmer which will accomplish this result. In order to economize in the volume of plastic entering into the molding apparatus, the supplemental ingate is formed in a weighted memher which also serves to hold the mold in close engagement with the base upon which it rests and the parts together, while pouring. Ne have found it necessary to avoid a too rapid chilling of the metal in this supplemental ingate and to facilitate the drawing of the casting to provide a refractory lining therefor.
In this manner, the metal as it is poured into the mold contacts only with a refractory substance, the low conductivity of which facilitates the flow of the metaland results in zr-highpercentage of perfect cast ings. Some molds, however, are provided with chills so as to control the setting or solidification of the metal of the casting after it entersthe mold cavities.
The invention consists primarily in a molding apparatus embodying therein a mold formed of a plastic composition having an ingate and a supplemental weighted member having an innate registering with the ingate of the mold and adapted to be superimposed upon said mold, the ingate of said supplemental memher being formed of refractory material and of a capacity sufficient-to permit the accumulation of dross therein; and in such other novel features and combination of parts as are hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out-in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a' mold embodying our invention;
Fig, 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; i
Fig. 3 is a similar view form thereof; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the mold arts containin the gate cavity and its ranches. sx Like letters refer to like parts throughout of a modified the severalviews. I
Inthe accompanylng drawings, we have shown the inventionin connection with an apparatufiiiibodymg therein a bi-part mold,
tion. ,..The ingate capacity to permit'the rapid pouring of the charge of metal with a relatively lower rate of flow of the metal throu h the parts of the mold is immaterial to the invention.
In the embodiment ofthe invent on shown in the drawings, at indicated a mold part hav ing therein a gate consisting of a run 6, branches 0 leading to each mold cavity and an enlargeddngate d; and a mold member e having therein mold cavities e and a cavity e forming a chill opening for the casting. In pouring, the section e of the mold is sup ported upon a base 7 formed of a material having a chilling action, which is preferably provided with a thin insulation f composed of asbestos or other suitable material. This construction avoids any possibility of the metal bondin or freezing to the support f and also avoi s a too rapid transfer of heat units from the castings to the base, conduction of heat from the castings to the base I being desired, under a certain control. The mold part a rests upon the part c and surmounting said section a is a weighted member 9 having an enlarged portion 9 through.
which-passes an opening 9 forming avsupplemental'ingate in register with the ingate d. This supplemental weighted member 9 serves to hold the mold firmly upon the base 7 and'when a plurality of parts are used in the mold, it also serves to hold these parts in close contact throughout the pouring'operag is of sulficiently great entire ingate Z and the run 6. In the pre erred form of the invention we provide either the main ingate d or the supplemental ingate g with a transverse partition, such as it, having a constricted passageway therethrough, so
as to momentarily check the metal as it is being poured and thus facilitate the separation of the clean metal and the dross in the supplemental ingate 9 This partition we have termed a skimmer and We preferably arrange it in the ingate d in order to secure the maximum capacity between the run 6 and the open mouth of the ingate g and to nsure a more thorough separation of the clean metal and the dross by permitting a more rapid pouring and affording a longer interval within which the separation above referred to will take place.
To prevent the chilling of the metal poured into the ingate g and minimize lilielihood of itsfreezing thereto; and to facilitate the drawing of the completed casting, we provide the ingate g with a lining of refractory material 9 preferably consisting of' the same composition as that employed in making the mold portions a and e.- I
The venting of the mold results from the method of making same, and the nature of the composition from which itismade, no
provision being required in the apparatus to 7 By providing an ample ingate, as shown a 6: described, we not only insure the delive y of clean metals to the various mold cavities, but a suflicient mass of metal in the inigate to avoid possibility of the premature so idific-ation of the metal therein.
After the casting operation, sutiicient time is allowed to permit the desired solidi fication of the or is drawn the member 9' is removed from the mold parts, the lining remaining in the ingate g or sliding therefrom and remaining about the ingate sprue.
The mold is ,then broken up and the cast: ings removed therefrom and such machining as is required to remove the sprues is done. In making the molds, however, the various branches 0 are so positioned in relation to the mass of metal in the mold as to permit the separation of the sprue at a point where it Wlll'IlOt interfere with the smaller parts of the castings. Where a chill is formed upon the casting, it is also necessary to remove this chill unless the nature of the casting be such as to'permitthis chill to form a part thereof.
It is'not our intention to limit the invention to the particular form of mold shown in the accompanying drawings, nor to the particular arrangement of the run 6. y and branches 0, since such will vary with-ldiiiei ent castings.
Having described the invention, What we .sting, and before the casting claim as new and desire to have protected by superimposed upon said '.mold, and to bear o to prevent separation of the mold members when the casting is poured, and a separable lining of refracupon the'samc suiiicientlv tory material for the ingate of, said supplesaid ingate having a capacmental member,
permit the accumulation of ity sufiiciont to dross therein.

3. A casting a paratus embodying therein a mold formed 0 plastic composition havin an upwardly opening ingate and a chil opening through the bottom thereof, and a heat conductive base adapted to support said mold and conduct heet from the chill opening witnesses this 28th day ofDecember,
ing therein, said base having a thin facing 1916. of refractory materialto retard the chilling action upon the mold and prevent the bonding of the metalthereto. Witnesses:
