To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, (Immune E. WnHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Pencils, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a pencil, and particularly to that type which employs a removable and renewable lead.
One of the object of the present invention is to provide a pencil which is simple and substantial in construction, cheap to manufacture, easy to manipulate and so arranged thatthe lead may be readily changed or replaced when worn Another object of the invention is to provide means for advancing the lead, and particularly a novel form of screw feed mechanism for Ezadually advancing the lead as the point comes worn. Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more full described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa side elevation of the pencil.

Referring to the drawings indetail, A indicates in general the pencil, which, in this instance, consists of a hollow cylindrical shell 2 and a solid and 3 which is pointed, as shown at 4, and provided with a central passaga5 for the reception of a lead 6. Formed on the opposite end of the pencil is-athread for the tion of a screw cap 7, which also-serves as" a holder for an eraser 8.

In actual operation, with the lead inserted in the pencil 5, it will only be necessary to turn the nut 14 to advance the screw 11, and, as this screw is positioned in alinement with the passage 5 and is adapted to engage the inner end'of the lead, it should be obvious that it is possible to radually force the lead outwardly through t e point 4 of the pencil when the lead becomes worn away. The

Furthermore, by flattening the end of the screw rod, as shown, it becomes possible 'to utilize the space in the upper end of the cylindrical shell as a magazine for extra leads, said leads being secured against accidental removal by the cap 7, which further serves as the holder for the eraser 8. Furthermore, it will be impossible to lose the nut as it is secured against endwise movement and is too large to become displaced by passing through t e slots. Having thus descri (1 my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A ncil including a shell, a pair of spaced rii mbers in the shell One having an aperture and the other a non-circular aperture, an extension on one end of the shell having a lead receiving. assage and havin its inner end arranguf adjacent to an spaced from one of said members, a threaded rod extending through said member having the aperture and having a portion conforming to and slidable through the memher with the non-circular aperture, and a nut on the rod mounted between the first named member and the inner end of the extension.
2. 3. A pencil including a shell, 0. lead en; gaging threaded rod in the shell, a nut for advancing the rod, a member in the shell, and means between the rod and member to hold the rod against turning, said member being spaced at such distance from an end of the shell to permit leads to be stored in the shell and to engage said leads to restrict movement thereof within the shell.
