Be it known that l, Grouse F. ftlCfhDAMS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Ruling Ma chines. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction, form, arrangement and operation of the several parts of a paper ruling machine of that'type in which the paper is caused to travel first in one direction and then in a direction at substantially right angles to obtain the cross ruling of the paper; whereby the paper may be handled at a greater speed than heretofore without buckling; and in which a poorer quality of paper may be successfully handled.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan of so much of a ruling machine as includes my invention, and

The endless carrier 1 feeds the sheets onto the endless carrier 3, their adjacent rolls being denoted by 2 and 4, respectively. The tapes or cords of the carrier 3 pass around tWo rolls 5 and 6. and around a roll 7" so arranged that the portion of the carrier be tween the rolls 6 and 7 is in plane slightly below the portion of the carrier between the rolls 4 and 5. .A table 8 forms a horizontal. extension of the carrier 3 from the roll 7 and beyond the plate is a sheet stop comprising a vertical portion 9 and a horizontal portion 10 which sheet stop is carried by brackets 11. uprising from the machine frame. the said horizontal portion 10 forminn an extension of the table 8 in a slightly lower horizontal plane. The table 8 may be supported by the brackets 11 and brackets 12, the brackets 1:2 serving also as a support forthe roll 7.
An endless cross carrier comprises two cross belts 13 and 14, the belt 13 passing around a pulley 15 and the roll 16, the upper portion extending across the depressed p01 tion of the carrier 3. The belt it passes around a pulley 17 and the roll 16. the upper portion traveling on the horizontal por tion' 10 of the sheet stop;

To adapt the cross belts 13 and 1 1 to different sized sheets, the belt 13 may be moved laterally along the roll 16 at one end of the carrier the belt at the other end of the carrier being movable laterally by adjusting the position of the pulley 15 lengthwise of the endless carrier 3.
This may be done by moving the brackets 18. which support the rolls 5 and 6 and the pulley 15 along the frame.
7 A series of diagonally arranged rollers 19 may be loosely mounted in suitable bearings in a frame 720 so that the rollers will rest on. the sheet near its advance edge as it is fed into position over the table 8 and cross bolts 13 and 14 against the sheet stop 9. The cross carrier will feed the sheets to an endless carrier 21. the tapes of which pass around. the roll 16 that end of the carrier.
The sheet along one edge will be firmly held by the weight of the diagonal rollers 19 on the belt 1 1 the belt being firmly sup ported by the horizontal portion 10 of the sheet stop; and will rest along its rear edge on the belt 13. Intermediate said edges, the sheet will rest on the table 8, thus permitting the ready feeding off of the sheets onto the carrier "21. with a minimum amount of friction. It will also be seen that when the sheet is sliding along the table 8, there is insufiicient air underneath the sheet to allow it to buckle or become distorted.
Any suitable means may be employed to drive the several carriers. such means in the present instance including the two cross shafts 22, 23, their step pulleys 24 25 and belt 26; the longitudinal shaft 27, its geared connection 28, 29, 'with the shaft 23; the pulleys 30" BL on the shaft 27 and their driving belts 32', 33; the belt 33 leading around a pulley 34 on the shaft of the roller 16; and the pulley 35 on the shaft 22 its belt 36 leading around the pulleys 37. 38, on the shafts of the rolls 2, 4t, and th idler pulley 39.
It is evident that changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
What I claim is 1. In a ruling machine, an endless carrier arranged in a substantially horizontal plane for carrying the sheets in one direction, a horizontally arranged table forming an extension of said endless carrier; and a hori zontally arranged endless cross carrier arranged in a substantially horizontal plane for carrying the sheets in another direction comprising tWo belts located along opposite sides of said table.
2. In a ruling machine, an endless carrier for carrying the sheets in one direction, said carrier having a depressed portion, a table forming an extension of said depressed portion, and an endless cross carrier for carrying the sheets in another direction comprising two belts located along opposite sides of the table.
3. In a ruling machine, an endless carrier for carrying the sheets in one direction, said carrier having a depressed portion, a table forming an extension of said depressed portion, and an endless cross carrier for carrying the sheets in another direction comprising two belts located along opposite sides of the table, one of said belts passing over the depressed portion of the first-named carrier.

5. In a ruling machine, an endless carrier for carrying the sheets in one direction, said carrier having a depressed portion, a cross carrier for carrying the sheets in another direction comprising belts, one belt being located along said depressed portion and means for adjusting said last-named belt laterally and for adjusting the length of the depressed portion of the first-named carrier to adapt the same to sheets of difierent sizes.
6. In a ruling machine, an endless carrier for carrying the sheets in one direction, said carrier having a depressed portion, a cross carrier for carrying the sheets in another direction comprising belts, one belt being located along said depressed portion, means for adjusting said last-named belt laterally and for adjusting the length of the depressed portion of the first-named carrier to adapt the same to sheets of different sizes, and a table located between said belts forming an extension of said depressed portion of the first-named carrier.
