To all whom it may concern Be it known that'we, Gnonen L. Coon and Josnrrr F. SCHMIDER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Sanctuary-Lamp, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to lamps, such as sanctuary lamps using as fuel, either fluid oil, or wax or grease in the form of a candle, and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient construction by which the combustion is evenly maintained at all heights of the fuel, or candle even to the bottom of the fuel receptacle, and also particularly simple and eflicient means for placing a new wick in the receptacle and for removing the remnant of the old wick, together with the remnant of the candle or solidified oil in the bottom of the receptacle.

The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter 'set forth and claimed.

In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of one form of our lamp.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the cap taken at a right angle to the section thereof appearing in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the wick holder and handle therefor.

This lamp comprises a fuel receptacle 1 and a cap 2 extending into and seated in the upper part of the receptacle.

The receptacle is here shown as formed with an outwardly flaring rim 3 at its top. The receptacle is supported in any suitable manner and as here shown it is shown as a hanging lamp provided with chains 4 or other means by which it is suspended.

The cap 2 is cup-shaped and seats in the upper part of the receptacle at or near the base of the flaring rim 3. The cap is here shown as provided with a conical or contracting top 5 having a central opening *5 and with a cylindrical body 7 having holes 8 therethrough, through which air passes to support combustion.

holder and wick may be of any suitable form, size and constructlon.

The wick holder 9 is, however, provided with a handle 11 extending upwardly along the bottom and side walls of the receptacle and the inner face of the flaring rim, and as here shown extends beyond the edge of the rim where it can be conveniently reached.

The cup-shaped cap 2 is formed with a passage for the handle, this passage being illustrated as a notch 12 in the lower edge of the cap.

When a candle is used, the wick and wick holder are part of the candle; and when the candle is consumed, the remnant will be removed, when the holder is removed by the handle 11., A new wick may be placed in the holder and the wick inserted in the central passage of the candle.

When a fluid fuel is used, the wick holder is placed in the receptacle and the oil poured in the receptacle and when the oil is low the wick holder and remnant of the wick can be removed by lifting the holder out by the handle and any solidified grease is brought out therewith. A new wick can then be placed in the holder, the holder with the wick replaced in the receptacle and the receptacle again filled. 7

Owing to the use of the cap with the conical or contracted top and with the air holes, sufficient air enters the cap and receptacle to support combustion and cause the wick to burn evenly at all times even when the candle is short or the oil low in the receptacle.

What we claim is:

l. A lamp comprising an elongated transparent fuel receptacle, a wick supported in at its top, a wick supported in the receptacle, a cup extending into the flaring rim of the receptacle and seated therein and extending above the upper end of the wick, the

, cap having air holes therethrough, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

A lamp comprising a fuel receptacle open at its top, a wick holder seated at the bottom of the receptacle and having a handle extending upwardly Within the recep tacle to the top thereof, and a cap seated in the upper part of the receptacle and having a passage for the handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

A lamp comprising; a fuel receptacle having an outwardly flaring Tim at its top, a Wick holder seated at the bottom of the receptacle and having a handle extending upwardly Within the receptacle and along the inner face of the flaring rim and a cupshaped cap extending into the flaring rim and seated therein near the base of the flaring Wall of the rim, the cap having a passage in its lower edge for the handle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
