This invention relates to a multiple press for use in the manufacture of footwear,
' whereby the upper is connected to the sole by gluing or cementing the edges of the said parts with each other. The object of the invention is to provide a multiple press in which a number of individual press devices are disposed side by side, so that a number of pairs of shoes may be operated the one after the other without changing the position of the machine, a plurality of such series of presses being arranged around a rotatable horizontal shaft which is revolved step by step, thus successively carrying the said series in front of the workmans place.
Another object of the invention is to assemble or unite the individual presses upon common carriers which can be fixed upon the shaft, so as to form a drum-shaped structure at the periphery of which many presses press devices in which the footwear to be treated is operated, the, said press devices being fixed and spaced from each other at the riphery of a fiat frame or carrier rotat dieting from said carrier are the supports lo about a horizontal axis. that is to say, every arm carries the press spindle or the like of one press and a support for the work of the adjacent, viz., preceding or following, press; therefore all the press devices are accessible from the circumference of the machine and from both sides of the respective carrying frame. Any desired number of carriers or frames can be assembled or mounted upon the common horizontal shaft which is rotatably journaled in the machine and driven through convenient gears or means mechanically or by hand. It is easily to be understood that the individual press devices of all the carriers are in alinement and that the rows or series so formed are moved in unison, when the'shaft is driven by steps, whereby the series of press devices are alternately arrested in front of the workmans place. The special combination of the parts allows of the collection of a great number of press devices within the smallest possible space, although they are freely exposed to the operator. Those series of press devices which have been charged with footwear, are swung away from the work place and moved into the casing, where the work pieces are dried; to accelerate this effect, the casing is provided at a convenient point with a heating appliance, and on the top with an exhaust device adapted to draw off the casing the warm air and vapors of the solvent of the adhesive or glue.
In the drawing, which forms a part of this specification an embodiment of the invention is represented by way of example.-
' F gure l is a front view of the press, and Fig. 2 illustrates an end elevation from the left side, partially in sectional elevation on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Like reference numerals denote like parts in both figures. The press devices proper consist of individual footwear presses, which are mounted in any desired number upon flat starshaped bodies or carriers 5 in such a mannor that upon each radially projecting arm 5 of a body 5 there are-provided members comprising a press spindle 6, and a rotatably mounted adjustable and interchangeable work piece support 7. The Press spindle acts upon the work piece through a press yjoke 8 bearing on the foot-wear to be treated.
ach arm 5 of the star shaped carrier 5 thus carries the support 7 of a press device and the spindle 6 of the next following press device. The carriers 5 are arranged side by side in the required number and are fixedly mounted upon a horizontal shaft 10 or the like, so that all the carriers 5 rotate upon a rotation of the shaft, and, as this rotation takes place step by step, there is always a series of individual presses situated at the same height in front of the workmans place.
For clearness, in both figures some of the press devices and press members are removed from between the arms 5. According to need any desired number of carriers 5 may be provided upon a common shaft.
The ends of the shaft 10 are mounted upon cheeks or standards 11 to which there is also I fixed acasing 12 which incloses the whole pressing machine at the back and at the sides in such a manner that the individual presses which are not in front of the work-' mans place are received in the interior of the casing 12. A heating device for heating the interior of the casing may be provided at a suitable point of the casing, for instance, in its lower part. The heating device may consist, as in the construction shown by way of example, of steam heaters or radiators 13, or heaters of another kind, f. ex., electric heating means may be used. The drying-of the work pieces is accelerated by the'heating owing to the more rapid evaporation of the solventof the employed cementing material, the rising warm vapors being at thev same time re oved from the casing by an exhaust device 14 'connec'tedto the upper part of the casing, so that the workman is not inconvenienced by the vapors.
The device for shifting a row of individual press devices by turning the shaft 10 may be of any construction. In the well known structure shown in the drawing, it consists of a worm wheel 20 mounted upon one end of the shaft, a worm 21 cooperating therewith, a belt pulley 23 loose upon the shaft 22 of the worm, and the coupling device 32. The worm wheel 20 is provided on one side with pins or projections 24, their number corresponding to the rows of presses. These pins are engaged by a locking pawl 25, the lower arm of which is connected by leverage to a foot lever 27, upon the depression of which the pawl 25 is swung back and brought out of. engagement with the pin 24. 'Then the belt pulley 23 is automatically coupled to the worm shaft 22, which turns by means of the worm gear the shaft 10 to the left, whereby the row of presses situated in front of the workmans place is moved upwardly and. into the casing 12. As soon as thenext row of presses has been brought before the working place, the next pin 24 strikes the pawl 25, which causes the pulley 25 to be uncoupled from the worm shaft 22, producing at the same time the engagement of the coupling 32 arranged between the shaft 22 and the standard 11, whereby the whole mechanism is stopped and the individual presses are locked in their position. During one revolution of the shaft 10 the work pieces are dried and can thereafter be removed at the front.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a press for manufacturing foot-wear by gluing the upper 'to the sole, the combination with a number of individual pressdevices, arranged upon and around a horizontal shaft, so as to form a plurality of series, of a casing inclosing the said individual press-devices at the rear and the sides of the press, a heating device placed in said casing, an exhaustconnected to the casing, and means for revolving the said individual press-devices in unison.
