Description

K. MURDOCK. SUPPLY AND DRAIN CAP FOR ANTIFREEZE HYDRANTS.
APPLICATION men MAR. 5. 1920.
1,385,572, Patented July 26, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IKELSO MURDOCK, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO,
ASSIGNOR TO THE MURDOCK MANUFAC- TUBING AND SUPPLY CO., 01? CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO,
SUPPLY AND DRAIN GAP FOR ANTIFREEZE HYDRANTS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KELSO MURDOCK, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supply and Drain Caps for Antifreeze Hydrants, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a supply and drain cap in which the drains will not clog from the clay or foreign substances that may be placed around or about the cap when the hydrant is installed. An-
other objeet is to provide a cap that will be less apt to become lost in shipment than those now used.
These andother objects are attained by the means described hereinafter and disclosed by the following drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined supply and drain cap embodying my inven tion. I Fig. 2 is a sectionalview on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation ofa cap embodying my invention.
My invention comprises a combined supply and drain cap for anti-freezing hydrants having lugs extending from points near the upper edge of its outer surface, a
' rib on the bottom, and a series of apertures points near the top a through the sides and the bottom. The cap A has a supply pipe connection a extending through its wall and having appropriate connection ends a and a. This supply pipe is supported internally by a bracket a. Lugs a and a project outwardly from the cap side wall a at diametrically opposed Directly below the lugs and at the intersection of the side wall a and the base a are apertures 01 and a These apertures extend for a short distance over both the wall and the base. A rib a formed on the exterior of the bottom or base extends preferably diametrically across the base from points adjacent to the apertures a and a Apertures a and (6 are formed in the bottom of the cap, on either side of the rib a The cap is adapted to be seated on the bottom of a hydrant by means of screw threads a The operation of the device is as follows: The water supply enters the hydrant through the supply pipe at. The waste water Wlll fall to the bottom of the cap and will drain through the apertures a, a a and a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26', 1921.
'Applicationfiled March 5, 1920. Serial No. 363,619.
The lugs a and (l y serve to hold such substances as bricksor stone that might be thrown against or around the cap at the base of the hydrant, when it is installed, from closing the apertures 64 and a on their side exposures. The rib a will sit on any substance that may be at the base of the installed hydrant, thereby leaving a clearance space between the substance on which it may be seated and the base. This clearance space will prevent clay or mud from clogging up the apertures and will therefore permit the water to drain away through the sand or other substances at the base of the hydrant.
I Iaving described my invention. what I claim is 1. A combined supply and drain cap, having side walls and a base, for hydrants, and having a series of drain perforations through its side walls and base, lugs extending from the side walls above the side perforations, and a rib formed on the exterior of the base ad oining the perforations in the base. 2. combined supply and drain cap, having side walls and a base, for hydrants, and having a series of drain perforations through extending through both a part of its base and its side walls, a rib formed on the ex-' terior of the base and lugs projecting, from the exteriorof the side walls, above the perforations.
3. A combined supply and drain cap, h aving a base and side walls, for hydrants, and having a series of drain perforations through its base and having arib formed across the exterior of the base.
4. A combined supply and drain cap, having side walls and a base, for hydrants, and having a series of drain perforations through its side walls, and having lugs projecting from the exterior of the side walls above the perforations.
5. A combined supply and drain cap, having side walls and a base, for hydrants, and having drain perforations therethrough at the junction of the side walls and the base, and lugs projecting from its exterior and adapted to space foreign matter from the perforations.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 2nd day of March, 1920.
KELSO MURDOCK.
