Description
L. S.'COiL. MATTRESS HOLDER FDR INVALID BEDS.
APPLICATION FILED MN. 3.1921.
Patented July 12, 1921.
PATENT OFFICE.
LUCY SPOIIRER COIL, 0F NEVADA, MISSOURI.
MATTRESS-HOLDER FOR INVALID-BEDS.
Application led January 3, 1921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LUcY Srorrana Coin, citizen of the United States, and resident of Nevada, county of Vernon, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mattress-Holders for Invalid-Beds, of which the following is a complete specification.
This invention relates to mattress holders for invalid beds and more particularly to beds having adjustable head and back rests` and the object of the invention is to equip a mattress with attachments for anchoring the mattress so that when the head and back rest is elevated the mattress cannot slip down the sloping portion thus formed.
With the object named in view, the .invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood.l reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of a mattress equipped with the devices of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the devices of the invention in use for prevent-ing` the elevated portion of the mattress from slipping downward.
In the said drawing, where like referentie characters identify corresponding parts in all of the figures, l is the side rail of a bed, and 2 the pivoted head and back rest whichcan be swung to and secured in an inclined position, as indicated in Fig. 2. The pan' ticular means for holding the head and back rest in inclined position is not shown as it forms no part of the invention.
Resting on the bed and overlying the head and back rest is an ordinary mattress 3. Se cured to each end of the mattress, but at opposite sides thereof, are a series of straps 4, which are preferably so stitched that they are capable of being swung away from the Y" adjacent end portion of the mattress, but
which for the greater portion of their length are stitched to the mattress cover so as to relieve the mattress of strain by distributing the same over a large portion ofthe mattress cover, and said straps are equipped at their loose or free ends with hooks 5.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Serial No. 434,434.
In practice, the hooks at one end only, that is the head end perform any function, the straps at the opposite end functioning only when the mattress is reversed in position and turned over, to bring such straps at the head of the bed. By reference to F 2, it will be seen that the straps at the head 0f the bed underlie the mattress and that their hooks engage the cross rail 6 of the head and back rest, so that when the latter is raised it will be impossible for the mattress to slip down the incline thus formed. The straps are not attached close to the eX- treme end of the mattress in order that it may be possible to tuclra sheet under the mattress and between the latter and the ends of the straps without interference thereby. It will also be understood that the straps nearest the side margins of the mattress will be stitched a certain distance therefrom, in order that the sheets may be tucked under the side edges of the mattress without interference by the straps.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a device of the character outlined, which possesses all the features of advantage set forth in the statement of the object of the invention, and while I have described and claimed the preferred embodiment of the same, I reserve the right to make all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
The combination with a holder and a mattress for support thereon, of a plurality of straps extending longitudinally of and underlying the mattress; the foot ends of the straps being secured to the mattress some distance from the head end thereof to permit a sheet, when spread over the mattress. to be fully tucked down over the head end thereof and back between such end and the said straps, and means attached to the opposite ends of the straps for detachable engagement with the head end of the holder.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
LUCY SPOHRER COIL.
