Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 17, 1921.
Application filed March 11, 1920. Serial No. 364,916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SIMoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seesaws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a seesaw or teeter-totter combined with a merry-go-round and may be constructed in any size, that is to say, either as a toy to be played with by hand or of a size such as children can play with in the home or in playgrounds or kindergartens or schools or it may be constructed on larger dimensions, so as to be adapted for the general use of the public in open-air gardens, summer resorts, and the like.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numin Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 the beam 1 is shown supported by a post 2 inserted in the ground This form is better adapted for the light use of children at home than in the rougher use of a play-ground or public entertainment park, or the like.
In Figs: 2, 3, and 4 a central standard 4 is substituted for the said post 2, which standard is borne by the cross 5, to which itis attached by the screw 6, braces 7 additionally securing it thereto.
In the top of post 2 and 1n the top of standard at is a metal piece 8 containing within it a round-bottomed socket adapted to receive and bear, with minimum friction, the rounded end 970i pin 10, which produces a ball bearing effect.
Pin 10 may be-formed with an enlargement 11 and is perforated at 12 whereby it is swiveled to bar13, which is secured by nuts 14 to the side members 15 constitutin the beam 1. r
y means of the swiveled connection on bar 13, the beam 1 is enabled to teeter and by means of the ball-bearing connection of pin 10 with the socket 8 the beam 1 is enabled to rotate as a merry-go-round.
Bar 13 is mounted in bearings 16, which,
if the members 15 be of wood, is essential,
in order to prevent wear.
In the form shown in Fig. 4, the socket 8 is repeated or duplicated above bar 13 and a duplicate pin 18, like pin 10, rests in the said socket and carries bar 19, similar to bar 13, and thus the upper seesaw in this figure is adapted to teeter either in unison or independently of the lower seesaw in this figure, but if used as a merry-go-round must necessarily operate more or less synchronously with the lower seesaw. Any form of seat desired may be attached to the beam 1 or formed in connection therewith and different forms are illustrated in different parts of the drawings, the same to be chosen or used as desired. Seat 20 is provided with a hand-hold 21 comprising a rod 22 fitted in holes in brackets 23.
Seat 24: is provided with a. cushion 25 and straps or arms 26 to ,hold a babe or young child from falling. A convertible form of seat 27 is also shown (at the right hand end of Fig. 1).
A cleat 28 extending from one beam 15 to the other and underlying the same, in conjunction'with bolt 29 and thumbnut, 30, makes each of these seats longitudinally adjustable on beam 1. The underneath side of each seat is provided with a pair of guides 31 that slide within the members 15. Cleat 23 slides on and underneath members 15. This longitudinal adjustability of the seats is desirable so that a lighter person can be balanced with a heavier person without interfering with the action of the device.
An additional means of balancing a lighter person (such, for instance, as an infant) with a heavier person is provided in the box 32, in which a bag of sand or a quantity of bricks or other weighty material may be placed, the said box being provided with cleats 33 and lugs 34, or the like, that extend from the bottom 35 of the box in such manner as to slide on members 15 and together with the parts of cleats 33 that extend over members 15 act as guides for the said box 30 relative to members 15, longitudinal motion with reference thereto being permitted or prevented by thumbnuts 36 and bolts 37.
The said members 15 are tied together at their ends by bolts 38 and nuts 39, the said bolts passing through cross-pieces 40.
Lugs 41 are guides for seat adjustment.
If desired, rollers 42 may be placed upon the cross 5 to facilitate moving the apparatus around.
This apparatus may be made partly of wood and partly of metal or all metal.
Having thus described this invention, I hereby reserve the benefit of all changes in form, arrangement, order, or use of parts, as it is evident that many minor changes Inay be made therein without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character. described, a plurality of superposed members having sockets therein and spindles projecting therefrom, the spindles being adapted to be rotatably and removably received in the sockets of the adjacent member, a relatively stationary base rotatably supporting the lowermost of said members, a horizontal trunnion extending from each of said members, and a beam for each of said members and rotatably supported on the trunnion thereoi for oscillating movement.
2. A device of the character described, a horizontal beam mounted intermediate its ends to have a vertical oscillating movement, said beam including a pair of spaced parallel members, seats provided at the ends of the beam, and a box disposed between said spaced members of the beam to have a relatively slidable movement longitudinally thereof, the bottom of the box carrying flange members underlying the side members of the beam, bars extending transversely oi the beam and resting on the side members thereof, and bolts extending through said bars and the bottom of said box for maintaining the box in adjusted position between the members of the beam, said box being adapted to receive counterweights 3. A device of the character described comprising a relatively fixed base having a socket in the upper part thereofia vertical spindle, rotatably fitted in said socket, a substantially horizontal beam supported by said spindle and having a vertical oscillatory movement thereon independently of the rotatable movementof the spindle, a sec ond vertical spindle rotatably fitted in a socket in the upper portion of said first spindle, and. a second substantially horizontal beam supported by said second spindle and having a vertical oscillatory movement thereon independently of the rotary movement of said second spindle.
4. A device of the character described comprising a relatively fixed base, a plurality of superimposed independent rotatable members supported by said base, and substantially horizontal beams one supported by each of said members and having a vertical oscillating movement thereon independently of the rotary movement of its respective supporting member and independently of the rotating movement of said other rotatable members.
5. A device of the character described comprising a relatively fixed base having in its upper part a round-bottomed socket, a pin-member fitting into the said soc zet and having a rounded end for engagement with the round bottom of the said socket, and a beam borne by the said pin, there being a socket in the upper part of the said pinmember having a round bottom like the said first-mentioned socket and there being superimposed another pin-member having its lower part rounded as in the case of the said first-mentioned pin-member and a beam supported by the said second-mentioned pinmember.
6. A device of the character described comprising a relatively fixed base having in its upper part a round-bottomed socket, a pin-member fitting into the said socket and having a rounded end for engagement with the round bottom of the said socket, and a beam borne by the said pin, there being a socket in the upper part of the said pinmember having a round bottom like the said first-mentioned socket and there being superimposed another pin-member having its lower part rounded as in the case of the said first-mentioned pin-member and a beam supported by the said second-mentioned pin.- member, in SWlVGlGCl relation thereto.
7. A. device of the character described comprising a relatively fixed base having in its upper part a round-bottomed socket, a pin-member fitting into the said socket and having a rounded end tor engagement with the round bottom of the said socket, and a beam borne b y the said pin, there being a socket in the upper part of the said pinmember having a round bottom like the said firstmentioned socket and there being superimposed another pin-member having its lower part rounded as in the case or" the said first-mentioned pin-member and a beam supported by the said second-mentioned pinmember in swiveled relation thereto, there being a perforation through the said secondmentioned pin-member and a bar passing therethrough, the said bar being attached to the said second-mentioned beam.
