S. STANLEY.
DRAINER.
APPLICATION FILED IIIAR I, 1920.
PATENT orFicE.
DRAINER.
Speceaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12,1921.
Application led March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,205. i
To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that SIDNEY STANLEY, a subject of the King of England, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, hasl invented new and useful Improvements in Drainers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient culinary drainer adapt'- ed for use in connection with pots, pans, kettles and similar receptacles for the purpose of retaining food such as vegetables, while permitting the discharge of water or liquid from the receptacle, the means for retaining the strainer in operative relation with the receptacle during the draining operation being such as to permit of the application and removal of the same with the utmost convenience and the least eX- penditure of time on the part of the operator while insuring the eiiicient retention of the straining medium against accidental displacement by the weight of the solid contents of the receptacle; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a show the elements of the locking means carried thereby.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the drainer detached. Y
Fig. L1 is a detail sectional view.
The receptacle in connection with which the drainer 10 is adapted to be used is indicated typically at 11 and is provided with keepers 12 consisting of horizontally disposed tongues spaced from the outer surface of the wall of the receptacle to form seats 13 which are closed at one end and are accessible at the opposite end due to the spacing of the terminals of the keepers from the surface of the receptacle. l
The drainer which may be provided with a straining medium orV diaphragm 14C Lof any desired construction such as wire, screen or gauze or perforated sheet metal or the equivalent thereof is provided on its marginal ring15 with tongues 16 disposed substantially perpendicular to the plane of the ring and having terminal deiected fingers 17 which are adapted to be engaged under the closed ends of the keepers 12 after the tongues have been brought into engagement with the keepers by the turning of the drainer after the latter has been seated upon the upper edge of the receptacle.
In other words in applying the drainer to the receptacle the first step is to place the same upon the upper edge of the latter with the depending tongues 16 in different vertical planes from the keepers 12, after which the drainer should be turned to cause the tongues to enter the keepers with the defiected terminal ngers 17 passing beneath the closed ends of said keepers, whereupon the drainer will be locked in place and the receptacle may be inverted or tilted to any desired extent to permit of thel escape of the liquid contents of the same while theV solid contents by contact with the screen or diaphragm are retained.
lNhat is claimed is:
1. A drainer having a perforated diaphragm and tongues extending perpendicularly from the plane of the diaphragm and having terminal, deflected fingers, in combination with a receptacle provided on' its wall with transverse open-ended keepersfor the reception of said tongues. Y
2. The combination with a receptacle provided adjlacent to the upper edge of Yits wall with offset horizontally disposed keepers open at one end, of a drainer having a perforated diaphragm and marginal ring and provided with depending tongues offset terminally at a distance from the plane ofi theringwhich is greater than the interval between said keepers and the upper edge of the receptacle wall, to permit of the engagement of said terminals beneath the closed ends of the keepers.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
SIDNEY STANLEY.
