IMPROVEMENT IN PACKAGE BANDS AND FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,000, dated March .18, 1873.
l To all whom it may concern:
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a top view of the band and fastener. Fig. 2 isa view of the same closed as if surrounding apackage. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section -of the band and fastener. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the fastener spread ont so as to show its construction.
My invention relates to a band which may be applied to the purpose of confining large bundles, but is intended principally for holding small parcels, such as packages of bank notes, or files of papers, or for securing pocket-books, Ste.; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the device for fastening the band, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the drawing, A represents the band, which may be made of paper, leather, fibrous fabric, or other suitable material. B is the fastening device, which may also be made of any suitable material, but I prefer to make it of strong, stiff paper, or card-board, when it is to be used for light packages only. In form it is square, or nearly so, with semicircular tongues b b extending from two of its sides in opposite directions. Two slits c c, are cut transversely of the band, one on each side of the center of the fastener. The band may be passed through these slits,`so as to lie either over or under the intervening port-ion. The semicircular tongues b b are formed on two opposite sides of the square, and lie in the same direction as the band, which is about half the width of the square, and is placed in the center thereof, so that the other two opposite sides d d project on each side a distance equal to half the width of the band, as shown in Fig. 4. 1n attaching the band to the fastener, the two sides d d are covered with paste or glue on their under sides and turned down on the under side of the band, so that their edges just meet, as shown in the dotted line in Fig. l, thereby securing the band to the fastener, and leaving a space between the upper side of the band and the lower side of the fastener through which the free end of the band may be passed. vThe tongues b b are then covered with paste or glue on their upper side, and turned down on the upper side of the fastener, so as to present an edge that will not easily fray out or become ragged.
In using this device to secure a package, the band is passed around the package, and the free end passed through the space in the .fastener and drawn a-s tightly as desired, and then secured by passing it through the slits c c, either under or over the intervening portion. o
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The band and fastener herein described, consisting of the band A, attached to the fastener B by pasting down the sides d d, said fastener being formed with the tongues b b and slits c c, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
