Specification of Letters Patent. v Feb;
Application filed December 21, 1929. Serial No. 132,251.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ,JosErH EBERT J OHN- son, a citizen of the 'United'States, and aresidentof Louisville, in the county of J efferson and-State of Kentucky, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Orthodontic Appliances, of which the fol lowing .is a specification.
The present invention relates to orthodonr, tic appliances, and has for its object to provide a device of this jcharacterwhich is of extremely simple and durable construction, which positively holds and constrains the arch-bar to perform its orthodontic function, which doesnot interfere with occlusion and does not annoy or discomfort the wearer, which is universal in action and application and which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which wlll be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:
F igure 1 1s aplan view of the invention embodied in an orthodontic appliance;
Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective of the anchor band in position on the molar,
the arch bar and interlocking'means;
Fig. 3 is avertical detail View in perspec- ,tive of the lock lug and the anchor band;
perspective of the saddle clamp of the arch Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail view in bar;
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the key; and v Fig. 6 is a detail view in plan of a slightly modified form of interlocking means.
Referring to the drawings whereinfor the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be seen that the invention is adapted for use with the orthodontic appliance of the lug .15 soldered otherwise 1 secured to the I I anchorband. l helock lug-.15 is tapered longitudinally that is, it is tapered transversely of the anchor "band and its lateral faces designated at l6 are under out or inwardly inclined, as shown in-the drawings;- -A key opening 17 extends-transversely through the lock lug and the upper surface of the lock lug adjacent the anchor. band'is provided withv a key slot/18. A saddle clamp 19 in tegrally formed with or otherwise secured to the arch bar 1O ateach of'itsrear curved end:
portions 11. The saddle clamp is provided with acha-nnel 20, the lateral walls ofwhich.
are inclined, as shown at 21 correspondingly with the inclined lateralfaces of the locklug', and this channel is also tapered longitudinally corresponding with the lock lu whereby when the saddle is mounted on the lock lug theinclined Walls of the channel will be snugly and slidably engaged with the lateral faces of the lock lug. The
coaction of "the undercut lateral faces and i the inclined walls prevents lateral displacement 'ofthe saddle from the lock lug] and the taper of the lock lug and the'saddle prevents endwise displacement in one direc tion. For the purpose of preventing end wise displacement in the other "direction the saddle is provided with key openings'22 and a key slot 23'adapted to be alined respectivelywith the key opening and key slot of i the lock lug. A key 24 of malleable metal is inserted in the alined key openings 17 and 2120f the locklug and saddle clamp when they are assembled, and is then bent up: wardly and is seated in the key grooves 18 and 23 of the lo'ck'lug'and saddle clamp and is hurnishedi'n position therein.
In practice, it is, obvious that theinven- I tion is especially adapted for use with orthodontic appliances of' the lingual type and with such appliances may be readily and see curely fastened inproper-position upon1the anchor bands and maintained fastened against displacement irrespective of the action of food or other forces'tending to disassociate the element from the appliance. The appliance doesnot interfere with occlusion, and is so positioned that it will not af-.

ing eachlcurved "rear end portion to its ankey opening therein and a key slot in its upper face, a saddle clamp having a tapered channel provided with inclined walls corre sponding to the under-cut lateral faces of- ,thelock lug and having keyopenings and a key slot adapted to be alined respectively with the key openings and key slot of the lock lug and a malleable keyinserted in the key openings and bent to be seated in the key slotand burnished therein.
2 Inan orthodontic appliance of the character described, means for securing the a reh bar t0 the anchor band including a lock lug having under-cut lateralfaces and provided with a key opening and a key slot, asaddle clamp adapted to be mounted on said lock lu'g andahaving a channel proend seated tion.
vided with incline d walls adapted to engage the under-cut faces of the lock lug and hav 7 ing a key opening and a key slot adapted to be alined with the key opening and the key slot of the lock lug and a malleable key arranged in the key opening and having its 7 in the key slot and burnished therein. 7
3; In an orthodontic appliance, means for securing the arch bar to the anchor band ineluding a tapered lock lug having under'cut lateral faces, a saddle clamp adapted to be mounted on said lock lug and having a tapered channel provided with inclined walls adapted to engage the under-cut faces of the V lock lug, and a malleablekey adapted to cooperate With-the lock lugiand the saddle clamp to maintain the Samein lOcked' 'posi JOSEPHJ'EBERT JoHN'soN.--'
