SAFETY-CLIP FOR CUFF-BUTTONS.
Application filed December 22, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. DOAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Clips for Cuff-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for locking cuff buttons and the like to the cuff of a shirt and to prevent them from becoming accidentally detached.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device which can be readily attached to and detached from a cuff button, and which fastens the button to the cuff safe-guarding it against loss. It is another object of this invention to provide a device of the character described, which is simple in structure, cheap to produce, and does not detract from the appearance of the button or cuff or cause annoyance or discomfort to the wearer.
These objects together with other objects and corresponding accomplishments will be apparent from the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a section View through a cuff at the button hole with a cuff button therein and my clip applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the clip ready for attachment to a cuff button; Fig. 3 is a view of the clip stamping; and Fig. i is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4: of Fig. 1 showing the position of the clip with relation to the button hole.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 4:, 5 indicates a cuff provided with button holes 6 and 7. Securing the ends of the cuff together is a button comprising a stem 8, a head 9, and a stud 10. Mounted upon the stem 8 on the inside of the cuff adjacent the head 9 is the clip.
The clip comprises a split ring of hook form indicated by 11 adapted to embrace and clasp the stem of the button. Secured to the hook 11 is a head 12 lying in the plane Specification of Letters Patent. I

of the ring. The clip is preferably made of spring metal, which is stamped out in the form shown in Fig. 3. In this form there is a head 12 and a leg 11. The leg is twisted at the point indicated by 13 so that the plane of the leg is then bent to hook form as indicated in Fig. 2, and the ring is made of such a diameter and with an opening of such size, that it may be slipped over the stem of the cuff button and will remain secured thereto by its spring tension. The end of the ring or hook is bent to form a grip for the finger for expanding the ring to attach or detach it from the cuff button.
The cuff button is inserted in position in the cuff in the usual manner, and the safety clip snapped onto the stem. The clip is then moved toward the head of the cuff button till it rests against the fabric securely holding the latter between the clip and the cuff button head. The head of the clip spans the button hole, acting as a means to prevent the latter from opening to prevent withdrawal of the head, and also prevents move ment of the button and safely secures it to the cuff. The clip may be readily detached to permit removal of the cuff button, but ordinary usage will not disturb its position.
Having described a preferred form of my invention, what I claim is:
1. .A clip for cuff buttons comprising a slip spring ring provided with a T-head disposed outside the periphery of the ring, said head being adapted to rest against the cuff and span the buttonhole.
2. A clip for cuff buttons comprising a T of spring metal with the leg thereof twisted at right angles to the cross member and bent to form a ring for clasping the stem of the button, said cross member being adapted to rest against the cuff and span the button hole.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 15th day of December, 1919.
JOHN H. DOAK.
