PUMP FOR BEVERAGE-DISPENSING MACHINES OR FOUNTAINS.
Application sied April 12, 1915. serial No.
To aZZwtom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. VVEST- FALL, a citizen oit' the United States, and a resident of East Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful VPump for Beverage-Dispensing Machines or Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its obj ect a pump for beverage dispensing machines as soda water fountains and the like, which is particularly simple in construction and highly ciiicient in use, and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of this pump.
Fig. 2 is a section on line A-A, Fig. 1.
This pump for beverage dispensing machines comprises, generally, a barrel, a tube mounted on the barrel substantially in axial alinement therewith, and opening at its lower end toward the interior of the barrel, an outlet pipe running along the tube and being joined thereto and extending into the barrel, and a plunger movable in the barrel and having a stem extending into the tube and a handle or head at its upper end.
The pump further includes, generally, a block mounted on the upper end of the tube and having a nozzle the passage of which is alined with the outlet pipe, and a top plate for covering the receptacle in which the pump is located.
1 designates the barrel which has a removable bottom 2 threading thereinto, the barrel having inlet openings near its top. As here shown, the top is composed of inwardly converging arc-shape arms 3 in the form of a spider.
4 is the tube mounted on the top of the barrel 1 at the juncture of the arms 3, the tube extending through the top so that 1t opens into the interior of the barrel 1. The tube is provided with a lining 5 and a casing 6 of non-corrosive material.
7 is the outlet pipe running lengthwise of the tube 4 and usually joined thereto, said pipe extending through one of the arms 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

.and into the barrel 1 and terminating near Vthe bottom of the barrel.
8 is the plunger movable in the barrel, the plunger being formed with an opening 9 through which the outlet pipe 7 extends.
Iother liquid in the tank is covered by a sleeve or casing 12 of non-corrosive material. n. he stem is or considerably less diameter than the tube and hence there is a comparatively large space between the stem and the inner wall of the tube for facilitating cleansing.
13 is the top plate, and 14 is the block or casting which is formed with a passage 15 alined with and receiving the tube 4. The block 14 is also formed with a nozzle 16 the passage of which is alined with the passage of the pipe 7. The upper end of the pipe 7 is deflected at 17 away from the tube 4 and is joined at 18 to the top plate. The casing 6 of the tube 4 terminates at the top plate.
19 is a sleeve encircling the stem 10 and spaced apart therefrom and iiXed to a head 20 threading on the stem below the handle 11, the sleeve extends into a tube 21 fitted int-o the upper end of the tube 4. Said head 20 is formed with a central socket in which a reduced extension of the handle is preferably secured so that the head and handle move as one piece. The tube 21 is formed with an external annular flange 23 at its upper end which extends over and forms a facing for the edge of the tube 4 and surrounding portion of the block 14 and with an inturned flange 24 at its lower end forming a seat'for aspring 25 interposed between said Vtiange 24 and the head 20.
In use, the pump is arranged in the syrup container or tank of which the top plate 13 is the cover, and the spring 25 holds the plunger elevated against shoulders 26 on the arms so that there is space below the plunger for the syrup to liow into the barrel l.
In operation, the operator depresses the plunger and forces the syrup in the barrel up through the pipe 7 and nozzle 16, and if desired the throw of the plunger and hence f the amount of the syrup delivered can be regulated by turning the head 20 toward or 'from the flange 23.
This pump is particularly advantageous 4in that it can be readily removed as a unit from the tank and upon the removal of the bottom 2 and the plunger 8, the tubes 4 and 7 can be quickly and thoroughly cleansed owing to the central location of the tube 4:.
I claim l. A beverage dispensing machine pump comprising a top plate formed with openings, a nozzle having a base mounted on the top plate andl having openings alined with vthe former openings, a` tube extending through the tube, substantially as and :tor the purpose described.
2. A beverage dispensing machine pump comprising a top plate, a nozzle having a base Ymounted on the top plate, the base and the plate being formed with alined openings, a barrel, a tube rising from the barrel and extending through alined openings of the base and the top plate, the base being mounted on thev tube above the plate, an outlet tube communicating with the nozzle, an abutment consisting Yof a tube extending into the upper end or' the Vrst mentioned tube, and having an inturned shoulder at its lower end, a plunger movable in the barrel and having a stem extending through the tube, a handle at the upper end of the stein, and a spring interposed between the handle and the shoulder of the abutment, substantially as and for the purpose specied. Y
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my naine in the presence of two 'attesting witnesses, at East Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, this 3d day of Feby., 1915. i
FREDERICK C. `WESFIMLLIJ.
