Be it known that I, ADOLF BELEK, a citi-` zen of the United States, residing at Pitts burgh, in the county of Allegheny and State' of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vater-Heaters,
' of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water heaters, and
its object is to provide effective means for regulating the temperature of the water and for regulating the supply of gas in accordance with the changes in temperature of the water and changes in volume of the water drawn from the faucet.
Writh this object in view, my invention is embodied in preferable form in the construction and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a Awater intake pipe and 2 a chamber formedf bya casing 3 and a head 4, and with whicll chamber, the intake pipe communicates. water outlet pipe 5 leads from the chamber 2 to the coil of the heater. i Mounted within,
cylindrical form, constitutes a sliding sleeve' valve, and is mounted to slide on'a hollow cylindrical body 9 fixed. in the casing,- and interrupting the flow line. Such sleeve portion of the piston constitutesY the valve adapted to control the inlet ports 10 formed in the body 9. The forward portion of the passage body 9 is provided Ywith an abutment head 11 adapted to limit the forward movement of the combined piston and valve member. The piston is adapted to receive the pressure of thek water coming through the inlet 1 into the chamber 2 and to be forced backward by said pressure to uncover the ports 10 to permit the water to enter the water passage body 9. Thein-` ner portion l2 of the body 9 is slotted longitudinally at 12 or otherwise perforated to provide outlet ports to permit the passage of the water to the space behindthe piston and to the outlet 5. A spiral spring 13 surrounds the body 9 and bears againstthe piston 6 so as to force the same forward, and acts to return the piston to cut-off position upon equalization of the water pressure on both sides thereof.
The valve body 6 of the piston is connected through the slots or openings 12 in the cylinder 9 by a bridge 13 with a head 14 carried at the end of a sliding stem l5 which is movable'through the wall of the casing and into a chamber 16, and is provided with an adjusting stop nut 17 and packing members 18. The outer end of this stem terminates adjacent the outer end of a stem 19 extending through the wall of the chamber 16 and into a gas valve chamber 20. To the end of stem 19 is secured a gas valve 21 adapted to close the opening in the head 22 formed in the chamber 20. This valve is adapted to control the communication between a' gas inlet tube 23 leading to the chamber 2O and a gas outlet pipe 24 leading to the heater.

the latter being secured tothe casing of the said valve chamber, the function of spring 25 being to exert a pressure upon valve 21 to retain the valve to its seat and also to return thevalve thereto when stem 15 moves away from stem 19.
The open inner end of the ported passage body 9 is adapted to be normally closed by an auxiliary water valve 26 which is adapted to be held to its seat and returned thereto by the pressure of a spiral spring 27 bearing at one end against a head carried bythe valve and at theother end against the removable head f1. Loosely engaging the stem of this valve 26 isan end of a depending arm 28 of a lever 29, the other arm 30 of which loosely engages the operating rod 34 of a thermostat 35 which has an opening 36 adapted to receive the flow from the circulating or heating coil, an opening 37 adapted to receive the hot water connec tion to the coil and an opening 3S adapted to be connected to the return leading tothe circulating coil, and an outlet 39 leading to the service pipes.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The faucet is opened and the flow of water toward the same reduces the pressure on the right-hand side of the piston, and the cold water coming from the source of supply enters the intake pipe 1 and passes into the chamber 2 on the left-hand side of the piston, whereupon, Jdie greater pressure of the water against the felt piston head on that side will force said piston baclr against thevpressure of the spring 13, which action will carry rearwardly the head 14 connected to the valve body of the pistonand carry the stem 15 against the outer end o f the stem 19,
so as to open the valve 21 and permit gas to pass from the gas intake pipe 23 through the valve opening into the gas outlet pipe Q4: to the heater, where it is ignitedl by the usual pilot light. As the combined piston and valve G-7 moves back, the sleeve portion thereof will uncover ports 10 in the `fixed body 9 and permit water to enter said body and pass therefrom through the outlet ports 12 in the inner portion into the chamber 2 behind the piston 7, and thence into the outlet pipe to the coil. The water will continue to flow from the intake past the piston valve and into the outlet pipe as long as the rate of flow and the temperature remain constant. Upon an increase of the temperature of the hot water to a prede termined degree, the thermostat 35 will be expanded and the rod 34 will be lifted so as to rock the lever 29 and thus openf the auxiliary water valve 25, which will permit an increased flow of cold water through the hollow body 9 into the outlet pipe 5, which will momentarily lower the temperature of the water in the heater. At the same time, the opening of the central passage through the piston body will cause an equalization of pressure on the opposing sides of the piston which will permit the force of the spring 13 to overbal ance the pressure on the left-hand side of the piston, and thus move said piston back, carrying with it the head 14 and stem 15 so as to remove the end of the latter from contact with the stem 19, whereupon, the spring will force the gas valve 2l to its seat, thus cutting off the supply of gas to the heater, with the result of reducing the temperature of the water heated, and regulating the volume of gas supplied relatively to the required temperature of the water.
Likewise, when the faucet is turned to reduce the volume of water passing through the heater, the pressure will build up on the right-hand side of the water piston 7 momentarily and equalize the pressure on the left-hand side thereof, so as to permit spring 13 to force the piston to the left and permit the gas valve to close, until the pressure is built up again on the left-hand side of the piston by the incoming water sufficiently to shift the water piston and open the gas valve.
What l claim is :w
1. ln a water heater, in combination with a water flow line, a water receiving chamber having an intake and outlet, a ported passage body interposed in the flow line, a coinbined piston and water valve in said cha-1nber surrounding and movably mounted upon said ported body and operable by variations of the pressure of the water for controlling the ports of'said body, and temperature controlled means for establishing an opening through the body to equalize the pressure on opposite sides of the piston.
2. In a water heater, in combination with a water flow line, a water receiving chamber having an intake and an outlet, anannular hollow piston and water valve member operable byvariations in the water pressure, aV passage controlling cylindrical ported body in said chamber interrupting the flow line and having an open end and surrounded by aid member, a gas supply controlling valve, means connected to said piston and valve member for operating said gas Vsupply valve, vand a thermostatically controlled valve controlling the opening through said cylindrical body.
