vIMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,396, dated February 4, 1873.
Io all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN BISHOP, of Northville, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my device as applied to a sash; and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner face of the lock, showing the workin g parts. p
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of sash-locks which operate by the gravity of the. bolt; its object being to provide a combined lift for the sash and bolt which can readily be applied to the sash without cutting it. The invention consists in the peculiar construction of a metallic lift containing a bell-crank and bolt, arranged and operating as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents a metallic lift, varying but slightly in form from similar lifts and drawer-pulls in general use, being pro, vided with a lug, a, at each lower corner and at the top, through which wood-screws pass to fasten it to the side rail of the sash. B, Fig. 2, is a bell-crank, having the extremity of its short arm pivoted in the upper corner of the lift A, nearest the window-casing7 at b. G is Y a bolt, having its inner end pivoted to the angle of the bell-crank, at c, and plays through a horizontal slot in the side of the lift. The weight of the long arm ofthe bell-crank causes the bolt to protrude from the lift and to enter any socket or niortise in the parting-strip d of the window-frame, and thus lock the sash.
ln raising or lowering the sash the operator naturally places one or more fingers under the lift A, and by raisin g the bell-crank withdraws the bolt and unlocks the sash.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of thellii'ting-case A, slotted at its side and arranged upon the surface ot' the sash, the weighted bell-crank B, and fastening-bolt O pivoted thereto, when these latter are concealed Within the case, all substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
