Description
c. 6. KING. COLLAPSIBLE TUBE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 20, I920- Pa tented July 20, 1920.
UNITED STATES CLIFFORD G. .KING, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAIiTD.
GOLLAPSIBLE TUBE.
1 Application filed February 20, 1920. Serial No.
is to provide a simple and effective sanitary v closure for the same whereby the contents of the tube will be prevented from being contaminated by dirt or accumulations adjacent I the nozzle thereof and from being discolored by chemical action between itself and the nozzle. A further object of my invention is to provide a removable closure whereby the contents of the tube may, at the option of the user, be delivered in a flat ribbon or in cylindrical form.
My invention will be disclosed by reference to the accompanying drawings in which-- I Figure 1 is an elevation of a collapsible tube provided with my improved closure, the
slidable cap being shown in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the slidable cap in delivery position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of my improved closure. Fig. 4 is an elevation on' an enlarged scale of the slidable cap. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4:.
In. the particular drawings selected for more fully disclosing the principle of my invention 10 is a. tube of tin or other flexible metal provided with the usual exteriorly threaded nozzle 11 arranged to be closed by the threaded cap 11'. The interior of' the nozzle is made of non-corrosive metal, and this may conveniently be done by inserting therein a non-corrosive bushing 11 and swaging the ends thereof over the ends of the nozzle. Located within said bushing is a removable longitudinally-slidable cap 12 having a flanged head 13 arranged to abut the end of the nozzle when said slidable cap is in closed position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The cap 12 is provided with a side delivery-opening 14 which when said cap is in closed position is preferably even with the top of the tube and when it is in delivery Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
position projects slightly beyond the end of the nozzle 11.
Preferably the inner end of the cap 12 is provided with small projections 15 arranged to contact with the inner surface of the nozzle and prevent the removal of the cap by the pressure of the paste. The. inner end of'the cap preferably is slotted in several places as shown at 16 to give a certain elasticity to the body of said cap, so that the user by grasping the head 13 may readily draw the cap out of the nozzle.
The bushing l1"-mnst be made of metal that is sufficiently hard to prevent the projections 15 from grooving the same and thereby permitting the paste to leak through the nozzle, there being at all times a perfect .fit between the cap 12 and said bushing.
It will be obvious that by squeezing the end of the tube between the thumb and forefinger as indicated in Fig. 2, the pressure thereby exerted on the paste will force the cap 12 outwardly and the paste will be delivered through the opening 14 in the form of a flat ribbon as indicated at 16. By removing the cap 12 the paste may be discharged through the nozzle in the form of a cylinder in the usual manner.
The slidable cap 12 preferably is made of nickel alloy or-some metal which will not be oxidized by the contents of the tube.
It will be apparent that by means of my improved closure the parts of the tube adjacent to the delivery opening cannot con- .taminate the paste as it discharges there from inasmuch as immediately after a portion of the paste has been forced from the tube, the cap 12 will be pushed back into closed position and it will be apparent also that the closure is complete and therefore that my tube is particularly adapted for pastes which become hardened upon exposure to the air.
Having thus described an illustrative embodiment of my invention without however limiting myself thereto what claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A collapsible tube, comprising a nozzle, a longitudinally-slidable cap located in-said nozzle, said cap having a side delivery-opening and a flanged head, and a cap threaded to said nozzle and arranged to lock the slid-.
able cap in closed position.
2. A collapsible tube, compr slng a nozzle, a removable longitudinally-slidable cap in said nozzle, said cap having a side deliveryopening and a flanged head, and a cap threaded to said nozzle and arranged to lock the slidable cap in closed position.
3. A collapsible tube, comprising a nozzle, a removable longitudinally-slidable cap in said nozzle, said cap having a side deliveryopening and a flanged head, the inner end of said cap being slotted and provided with projections arranged to engage the inner cap having a side delivery-opening and a flanged head, and a cap threaded to said nozzle and arranged to lock the slidable cap in closed position.
5. A collapsible tube, comprising a nozzle, a bushing of relatively hard, non-corrosive metal in said nozzle, a removable longitudinally-slidable cap in said nozzle, said cap having a side delivery-opening and a flanged head, and a cap threaded to said nozzle and arranged to look the slidable cap in closed position.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 17th day of February, 1920.
