UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. y
FRANK PELO AND STEFANIA PELO, OF MCDONALD, PENNSYLVANIA.
Y BEEHIVE.
Application filed May 24,
" sylvania, and I, STEFANIA PELO, a citizen of Poland, residing at McDonald, county of Illasliington, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beehives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bee hives, such as are used by apiarists in which to gather honey.
'Ihe principal object of the invention is to provide a bee hive containing a plurality of plates upon which the bees may build their combs, means being provided whereby the plates are spaced uniformly one from another, and which may be readily removed from the hive when desired.
These and various objects of like character, which will be more fully apparent as the description progresses, are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view` showinga bee hive made in accordance with the invention, the walls being broken away in order to disclose the interior construction.
Fig. 2 is a partial vertical sectional view taken through the hive.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the plates as combined with the spacing elements.
Fig. 4: is a side elevational view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a in detail, and
Fig. 6 is an edge View thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the bee hive is shown to be formed rectangularly and comprised of double walls at the sides, back and bottom. The outer walls 10 are separated from the inner walls 12 by spaces 11, while the front side is normally covered by a double door 14, constructed in a similar manner, and disposed over the bee hive is a removable roof 15, which upon being raised gives access to the entire interior.
Extending longitudinally within the hive, and aliiXed to the inner side walls 12, at about the center of their height, are cleats 16, similar cleats 17 being secured parallel to the upper end walls of the structure and also near the bottom.
A plurality of rectangular plates 18 are plan view of one of the plates Specioaton of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29,1920. 1919. SeraI No. 299,483.
formed with recesses 19 in their edges adapted to engage with the cleats 16 so as to be suspended therefrom, the upper edge of the plates 18 containing central grooves 20, receptive of tongues 21, formed with short strips 22, carried in heads 23, adapted to rest upon the upper cleats 17, the corners at the lower edges of the plates being removed so as to permit engagement with the lower cleats.
In order to maintain the plates 18 lat a proper distance one from another, knobs or similar extensions 25 are formed substantially at their centers adapted to make contact with the adjacent plates when disposed in a row within the hive.
Used either in combination with the plate 18 or as fillers at the ends of the hive, are rectangular frames 28, having lateral proj ections 29 upon their lower elements while their upper elements are engaged by hin es 31, to strips 32, acting as spacers for t e A platform 36 extends outwardl from the door opening upon `which the bees may alight.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a bee hive containing a plurality of movable comb filling plates has been dislosed and the same may be adjusted to suit the number of bees inhabiting the hives, or, as they become filled, removed, the accumulations separated therefrom and then returned for further use.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
In a bee hive of the character described, the combination of a plurality of upper and lower cleats with a plurality of juxtaposed grooved plates, each comprising a head, tongues formed with short strips carried on said heads adapted to rest upon the upper cleats and the corners of the lower edges of said plates recessed or removed for permitting engagement with the lower cleats, and knob extensions formed in substantially the center of said plates adapted to make contact with the adjacent plate for spacing the several plates, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have alixed our signatures.
