AUTOMOBILE-DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1%17.
To all'wfiom 2'25 may concern:
. Be it known that I, CHARLES C. AnnL- f srnnonn, a citizen siding at Union of the United States, re- (lity, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have inuseful Automobile-Door, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a'neat and eflicient construction especially customary to attach said useful in the production of doors for automobiles, although, of course, not limited to that particular use.
The accompanying drawings invention. Figure 1 is a perspective face view of an automobile door constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section, on a larger scale on the plane indicated by line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but of a modified form; Fig. at is also a view similar to Fig. 2 but of another modified form; Fig. 5 is a section on the plane indicated by line 55 of Fig. l.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a Wooden or metal frame commonly used as afoundation for the door or other member to be constructed in accordance with my invention. The face of the door or other member is formed by a sheet of metal 11 extending across the frame 10 and it has heretofore been sheet directly to the frame thus leaving exposed the faste ing members in a manner which materially interfered with a. proper finish of the article and requiring considerable skilled labor. I, therefore,,propose, instead of fastening the face sheet 11 directly to the frame 10, to provide an intermediate member preferably illustrate my metal which is of convenient form for ready and easy attachment to the frame 10 and is provided with an extended edge or flange to which the sheet 11 In Fig. i I show the intermediate member as an angle piece 12 which is laid around the frame adjacent the face which is to be covered by the sheet 11 with its flange 13 projected so as to receive the plate 11, in Fig. 4 the connection being indicated as being accomplished by turning the edge 11' of the sheet 11 back of the flange 13. Instead of this connection, the sheet 1.1 could be attached to the flange 13 by welding as indicated in Fig. 2. The arrangement shown in Fig. 4, however, leaves exposed the fastening screws 14 by which it is most readily at may be easily attached.
tached to the frame 10 and I, therefore, preer the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 where the intermediate member '12 is a flat plate provided with an extended edge 13 extended beyond-the frame 10. The late 12 is secured by the fastening memers 14 to that face of the frame 10 which is to be covered by the plate 11, the edge 18 projecting beyond the frame, and, if desired, being laterally displaced from the main body of the plate, as indicated and 3. The main plate 11 is then laid upon the projecting edges 13 and'covers the plates 12 and the fastening members 14- not only hiding themv from view but protecting them from the weather and also overlying them in such way as to. prevent their removal by vibration. Plate 11 will be attached to the edges 13 either by welding, as indicated in Fig. 2-, or by turning over the edge 11 edge 13.
I claim as my invention: 4
1. A door comprising a main wooden frame, plates attached to one face of said main frame and provided with edges projecting beyond the main frame, and a face plate overlying said plates and their fastening means and attached to the said projecting edges by a returned overlap of the edge of the face plate embracing the projections of the first mentioned plates.
2. A door comprising a m'ain wooden frame, plates attached to one face of said main frame and provided with edges projecting beyond the main frame, and a face plate overlying said plates and their fastening means and attached to the said projecting edges.
3. A door comprising a main wooden frame, plates attached to one face of said main frame and provided with edges projecting beyond the main frame, and a face plate overlying said plates and attached. to the said projecting edges.
- structural member comprising a wooden frame intended to have one of its faces covered by a covering plate, attachment plates secured to the aforesaid face of the frame and having edges projecting beplate overlying their fastening 2 and in Figs. 2
said projecting 5. A structural member comprising $11 wooden frame intended to have one of its faces covered by a covering plate, attachment plates secured. to the aforesaid face of the frame and having edges projecting beyond the frame, and a cover plate overlying said attachment plates and attached to the said projecting edges.
6. In a vehicle door, a frame, a metallic strip secured'to the side of said. frame by fastening devices and projecting in substantially straight lines beyond the edge of the same, a metal panel also arranged at the side of said frame to completely'cover the some With. a portion thereof overlapping said strip and covering said fastening de vices, and means for securing said strip and panel together.
7. In a vehicle door, a door frame, metallic strips secured to one side of said frame by fastening devices and projecting in substantially straight lines beyond a plurality of the edges thereof, a metal panel arranged at the side of said frame so as to cover the same and also havinga plurality of its edges overlapping said strips and covering said hastening devices, and means for securing said panel and Si-lPS together.
8, Means for securing sheathing to frame embodying, in combination, a fiat metal. strip, means for securing said strip upon one face of the frame with one edge 01 the strip protruding beyond the edge of the frame, and a sheet of metal sheathing laid upon the same face of said frame to which the strip is attached, said sheathing being of greater area than the area of the frame, so that a portion of the sheathing extends oeyond the'edge of the frame and the free edge of the strip, the extended portion of said sheathing being bent over to embrace the projecting portion 01" the strip for the purpose of securing the sheathing to the frame, whereby both the sheathing and the devices for securing it into position are Wholly at one and the same side of the frame, With the securing devices entirely concealed.
In Witness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand at Union City, Indiana, this 2nd day of February, A. D. one thousand. nine hundred and fourteen.
