AUGUST UNEY, OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION-Toor..
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented apr.. a, ieri.
Application filed May 5, 1915. Serial No. 25,959.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST UNEY, asub-` ject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to combination tools and more particularly to a combined level and square. The principal object of my invention is to provide a tool which has the form of an ordinary carpenters level, which may be readily and quickly converted into a square.
Another object of my invention is to so construct the .device that when not being used as a square the device occupies no more room than the ordinary level.
Another object of my invention is to provide means whereby the member which forms the square is rigidly held in position both when folded and when extended to complete the square.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein described and more pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved tool showing the saine in its folded condition, and also showing in dotted outlines the position of the member which is used to form the side arm of the square.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in side eleva tion of the end to which the extension is attached in order to form the square.
Fig. 8 is a view in end elevation of a part shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the under side of the removable part which forms the side arm of the square.
Fig. 5 is a view in section on the line 5 5, Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a view in section on .the line 6-6, Fig. 2, and the square arm being positioned thereon.
Referring to corresponding parts by the same numerals of reference, 1 denotes the `level body having the glasses 2 and 3, for
use in leveling horizontally and vertically.
specifically These glasses are constructed in the usual manner and I prefer to place them adjacent one end of the body in order to allow a greater length for the removable arm hereinafter described.
'Fhe side of the body 1 contains a longitudinal depression 4, in which the removable member 6 is adapted to lie. This de pression extends throughout the greater length of thebody and at the end adjacent the level glass is provided an under-cut abutment shoulder 5, the member 6 having a correspondingly shaped end so that when these two portions contact, member 6 is prevented from being liftedout of the depression. The cutting of the depression l in the side of the level forms two longitudinally disposed strips 7, which are cut off at a point 8 forming abutment shoulders which are at a distance from the end of the level body equal to the width of the strip 6 and are formed in order to enable this strip when placed at right angles to lie flush with the surface of the level body and be forced against these shoulders and so held square with the edges of the level.
This end of the level body is provided with a depression 9 and has seated therein an L-shaped member 10 having in the upper surface a T-shaped opening 11. This member is held in place by means of screws 12 and through the short side is a screw 13 used to hold the removable arm 6 in a rigid position, as hereinafter described. On the underside of member 6 are formed two projecting lugs 1K1 and 15, the former having angular sides 16 adapted to fit snugly against the sloping sides 17 of the t-slot l1 and against the side of which screw 13 is adapted to contact and thus press the edges of arm 6 in contact with the shoulder 8.
It will be noted that the slot 9 has a greater width than member 10 thus providing a space on each side thereof in which the lug 15 rests when the device is used as a square and it should also be noted that the arm may project from either side of the level though the direction shown in Fig. l is the more convenientgas it allows the level to be conveniently used as such. V
Both edge of the level and the edge of arm 6 are provided with graduations 18 and 19 which may be of any desired form. Lug 15 is provided with inclined faces 20, which faces are at right angles to those in lug 14 Y be madein detail' and design without departing-from the scope of the claims.
What I claimV as new and Wish to cover by Letters Patent isz-- i 1. A combination tool of the character described comprising a body having spaced apart longitudinal strips connected by an abutment shoulder, a movable strip shaped to fitbetween the longitudinal strips on said body, and complemental means carried by the body and said movable strip for selectively holding the latter against said abutment shoulder or against the ends of said longitudinal strips.
2. A combination tool of the character described comprising a body having spaced apart longitudinal strips connected at one end by an abutment shoulder, said body being provided with a recess located beyond the other ends of said strips, a movable strip shaped to fit lbetween the longitudinal strips of said body and provided with Vlugs extending into said recess, and means coperating with said lugs to selectively hold the movable strip against said abutment shoulder or against the ends of said longitudinal strips. Y
3. A combination tool of the character described comprising a body having spaced Yapart longitudinal strips connected at one 'i end by an abutment shoulder, said body j being provided with a recess located beyond ;the' other ends Vof said strips, a movable I 45' strip shaped to iit between the longitudinal strips of said body and provided with lugs extending intosaid recess, ay slotted plate extendingV over said recess and having undercut portions positioned to be selectively engaged byY said lugs, and means for engaging said lugs to prevent relative movement of said body and said movable strip.
Ll'. All combination; tool Yof the character described kcomprising a body having an abut- (lopies of this patent may be obtained for described comprising a body having an abutment shoulder and a recess spaced therefrom, spaced apart abutment shoulders contiguous to said recess, a slidable strip having lugs positioned to enter said recess, a slotted plate extending over said recess, and spaced apart lugs attached to said movable strip and positioned to selectively engage said slot, and means for engaging either lug to prevent relative movement of said movable strip and the said body.
6. A combination tool comprising a level having a recess in the surface thereof, a strip of rectangular section adapted to seat in said recess, lugs formed on one end of said strip, said lugs having divergent inclined edges and disposed at right angles to each other, a member having a T-slot seated in said recess adjacent the end of said level, said slot having inclined side walls adapted to iit the edges of said lugs and screw means for retaining one of said lugs in said slot.
7. A combination tool comprising a level having a recess in the surface thereof, a strip of rectangular section adapted to seat in said recess, lugs formed on one end of said strip, said lugs having divergent inclined edges and disposed at right angles to each other,
a member having a T-slot seated in said recess adjacent the end of said level, said slot having inclined side walls adapted to iit the edge of said lugs, shoulders formed in said level at right angles to the edges thereof, and screw means for engaging one of said lugs to force said strip against said shoulders and hold the same at right angles to the edges of said level.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
