Application filed July 8, 1916. Serial N 0. 108,207.
I Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to-the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fasteners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with boxes or the like for temporarily retaining a cover inapplied position; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be applied with convenience and facility and which serves to effectively maintain a lid or cover in applied position. a
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fastener whereby eertain important advantages are attained and-the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrafing a fastener constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position; Fig. 2'is a view in elevation of the fastener as disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the fastener as disclosed in the preceding figures; and Fig. 4 is a View in perspective illustrating a fastener constructed in accordance with a further embodiment of my invention and in applied position.
In practice it is desired to employ at least two of my improved fastenersin connection with a single lid or cover but as the construction of all of the fasteners is intended to be substantially the same, it is thought that a description of a single fastening dc vice is sufficient for the ,purposes of disclosure.
As disclosed in Figs. 1 to 3, 1 denotes an elongated plate provided at one end with the returned portion 2 whereby the same may straddle the upper edge of a box or thelike, and thereturned portion 2 is providedwith the inwardly directed penetrating points,
while'cthe'portion of the plate .opposed'to the returned portion 2 has struck therefrom the downwardly directed tongue 3 which is adapted to be forced inwardly in a manner which will hereinafter be more particularly set forth. The tongue 3 is also provided with an inwardly directed prong 4 for a purpose which is also believed to be selfevident.
The vertical marginal portions of the 5 the tongue 3 and which serve as supports for the cross pin or pintle 6 with which is operatively engaged a member M for forcing the tongue 3 inwardly in order to as sure an effective engagement of the device in itsentirety to a wall of a box or the like.
As herein embodied, the member Mcomprises an elongated plate of material having its longitudinal margins at one end portion thereof returned transversely, as indicated at 7 to afford an effective means whereby the requisite rocking movement may be imparted to the member, while the opposite longitudinal marginal portions of thcmemher are returned longitudinally, as at S, to afford knuckles through which the pin or pintlefi is directed, and whereby the member M is capable of rocking movement.
The portion of the member M between the eyes 8 and in advance thereof is inwardly directed to afford a cam 9 which, upon downward rocking movement being imparted to the outer end of the member M, serves to force the tongue 3 inwardly toward the side of the box or the like with which the device is engaged.
The upper portion of the plate 1 is provided at opposite sides of the returned portion 2 with the longitudinal marginal extensions 10 of predetermined length and which are bent upon the box B, while the vertical portions or feet 11 of said extensions 10 are adapted to bridge the adjacent edge of the lid or cover as is thought to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.
The form of invention illustrated in Fig. l is substantially the same as has hereinbefore been set forth except that each of the extensions 10 is substantially U-shaped in form with the upper stem thereof of a greater length than the lower stem and with the intermediate or base portion thereof positioned a predetermined distance in advance of the plate l With this form of my invention it will be perceived that a lid or cover L need not be of an area substantially equal to the area of the box B, but can be of a greater size.
It will be understood that my improved fasteners are adapted to be employed in connection with boxes containing merchandise which is susceptible to injury when the top or lid is removed and affords an effective medium whereby the lid or cover may be temporarily maintained in applied position upon the container.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my in vention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A fastener of the class described comprising a plate having an end portion returned, a tongue struck from the plate and opposed to the returned portion thereof, angular extensions carried by the end of the plate at opposite sides of the returned portion thereof, and means carried by the plate for forcing the tongue inwardly toward the returned portion thereof.
3. A fastener of the class described comprising a plate having an end portion returned, a tongue struck from the plate and opposed to the returned portion thereof, angular extensions carried by the endof the plate at opposite sides of the returned portion thereof, said plate being provided at opposite sides of the tongue with the returned portions afiording knuckles, a pin mounted in said knuckles and disposed transversely of the tongue, and a member pivotally engaged with said pin and coacting with the tongue for forcing the same inwardly.
4. A fastener of the class described comprising a plate having an end portion returned, a tongue struck from the plate and opposed to the returned portion thereof, angular extensions carried by the end of the plate at opposite sides of the returned portion thereof, a pin disposed transversely of the plate at a point substantially midway the length of the tongue, and an elongated member provided adjacent one end with returned portions affording knuckles through which the pin is directed and whereby said member is capable of rocking movement, the portion of the member inwardly of the knuckles being angularly disposed in a direction toward the tongue and adapted to contact with the tongue upon rocking movement of the member in one direction for forcing the tongue inwardly.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
