Description

H. L. VAUGHAN.
BOTTLE OPENER.
APPLICATION FJLED Aue.2|,, 1915.
1,207,100. Patented Dec. 1916.
Chicago, of Illinois, have invented certain new and HARRY Ia VAUGHAIROF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.-
'BorrLE-ornNER.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 21, v1915. Sena 1N0. 46,731.
To all whom it mag "concern Be it known that I, HARRY L. VAUGHAN, "a citizen of the United States, residing at in the county of Cook and State useful Improvements in Bottle-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in bottle openers and has for. its-object to provide a device of simple and cheap construction for removing crown caps. AIth6I' object of the invention is to prowhich 2o vide a combination tool embracing a crown .cap remover and cork screw. v I
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter be more fully explainedfI have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Figure l,'is an elevational view of my device shown in operative position, Fig. 2, is a'view showing the upper edge thereof, Fig. 3, is a similar view showing the lower edge thereof, Fig. 4, is a plan viewof a sheet metal blank from which the device is made, and Fig. 5, is an edge view of amodified form of the device.
Like reference characters indicate like J'pa'rts throughout the specification and inthe several views in the drawings in which- 1 indicates a sheet metal blank stamped in a shape so that when'it is bent upon itself onthe line A that a fulcrum point 2, a claw,
3, and a lever 4 is formed, the latter having an opening 5 at its end 6 for engagement with a key ring. By using a blank which must be doubled upon itself to form the device a perfectly smooth upper edge 7 is provided'thu's obviating polishing the edge to remove burs. I have found that the greatest difiiculty with sheet metal openers is the Y fact that the lower edge ofthe lever portion which is engaged by the users hand in operating the, opener cuts the hand and-therefore makes the device very unsatisfactory.
' In order to obviate this nuisance I have provided a cutaway portion 8, pressed the corend 11 of the spiral cork screw 12 which is held pivoted in the recess 13 formed by said which I claim to be new and spaced apart corners 9 and 10 by means of a pin or rivet 14. At the opposite end of the cut away portion 8 is an extension 15 having a recess 16 stamped thereon-to re ceive the point 17 of said cork screw 12.. The polnt 17 of the cork-screw is normally out of alinement with the recess 16 so that the cork screw must be sprung in order that the point 17 will enter the recess and'therefore the tension of the. cork-screw when sprung will hold said pointin place in said recess so that in operating the device as a crown cap remover the spiral body of the cork-screw will be engaged by the' fingers of the operator andform an enlarged bearfingers as would the edge In Fig. 5 I show a slight modification of the device in which I substitute a screwdriver 18 for the cork-screw the screw-driver;
blade being pivoted at 19 andthe screw en gaging end 20 thereof being adapted to seat in a recess 21. The side 22 of the member 18- is formed arcuate to form a; bearing for the hand of an operator when "the device is being used as a cap remover.
Having now described my invention that desire to procure by Letters Patent is A bottle cap remover consisting of a metal blank member terminating in a point for engaging the cap of a bottle andan upwardly curved claw, a cork-screw pivoted to said blank member intermediate its ends and having its longitudinal axis at an angle Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
to the longitudinal axis of said blank and a recess formed in the side and near one end of said blank, whereby the free end of said HARRY L. VAUGHAN.
