To all wibo/m t may 00n00rn Be it known that l, Anania R. HUNsicnnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of llilliamson School, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and mproved Jointer-Gruard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to ,sectional guards for use on jointer machines, or the like, to prevent injury to the operator by the knives of the cutter head, the guard sections being mounted to individually yield to an advancing board or other piece of work, the remaining guard sections maintaining their posi.- tions over the'cutter head at the opening in the table.
My invention contemplates a guard ofthe indicated character in which, in addition to the guard sections yielding to the advance of the work, follower guard sections will engage the rear end of the work and close the opening over the cutter head behind the board.
The invention has for its purpose provide new and improved means for yieldingly mounting the guard sections and automatically restoring them to positions closing the opening.
The invention will be particularly eX- plained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section showing my improved guard means in use; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the positions automatically assumed by the guard sections in the passage of a board over the cutter head; Fig. 8 is an end view on a reduced scale; Fig. 1 is a plan view; Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section of the machine showing my improved guard means in front view.
|The invention is applicable to any jointer, or like machine, having asuitable frame 10 and bed 11, with any approved revolving cutter 12, turning in iearings 13. 1n accordance with my invention curved guard sections 111 are provided at the back of the cutter 12 and similar curved guard sections at the front or forward side of the cutter. rFhe guard sections 14 are mounted to move in an arcuate path on vertically curved supporting bars 15 which are secured at their also, to
ends in any suitable manner on the frame 10 as by end brackets 17. The bars 16 range lengthwise of the cutter and are formed with vertical slots 18 and set screws, 19, or the like, extending through said slots and into the guard sections 111 from the under side slidably retaining said guard sections in place. The respective guard sections 14E are subject to a weight 20 on a cord or like flexible element 21, which has running engagement with the individual sections 14. The cord 21 passes over a sheave 22 on the frame 10 and then alternately over sheaves 23, 24, on said frame and on the individual guard sections, respectively, so that the said guard sections may yield individually or collectively to the advance of a board A. The upper front edges of the guard sections 1-1 have upturned lips 25 which present broad surfaces for contact of the board A.
"With the described arrangement as the board ad vances, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, the front end thereof will engage a number of the sections 11 in proportion to the width of the board as shown in Fig. .1. The engaged sections will be depressed as shown best at the left of Fig. y2. Upon the board passing beyond the depressed guard sections 14, the weighty 2O will restore the sections to the upper positions above the opening of the table over the cutter 12. In order that, when the"A guard sections 14; are depressed, the pressure thereof on the under side of the board A. will be relieved, 1 provide a resilient bar 26 ranging lengthwise of the cutter 12 outward from the path of movement of the guard sections. Said bar may be secured in any suitable manner at its ends as by screws, as at 27. To engage the resilient bar 26, knobs 28 are provided on the respective guard sections. The holding action of the bar 2G is overcome by the weight 20 after the board has passed beyond the guard sections. The guard sections 15, at the front of the cutter, that is to say, the side approached by the board A, are formed and supported similarly to the sections 14, there being a longitudinal supporting bar 29 having vertical slots 30 for the screws 31 that pass through said slots and secure the respective sections 15 slidably in position. The guard sections 15 are subject to a suspended weight 32 on a cord 33 which has running engagement with the respective guard sections. The cord 83 eX- tends over a sheave 34 on the frame and then alternately over sheaves 35 on the frame and sheaves 36 on the individual guard sections 15. At the upper edge of the guard sections 15, lips 37 are'formed.
In operation as the rear end of the board A passes beyond the upper edges of the guard sections 15, the weight 32 will cause a number of these sections, corresponding with the displaced sections 14, to follow the board A with the lipped upper edges 37 engaging the rear end of the board, as in F ig. 2, and thereby close the opening' above the cutter in the rear of the board 'as the latter advances over the cutter. It will be observed from Fig. 3 that the weight 32 is smaller than the weight 20 so that the pr'eponderating force of' the weight 20 will raise the depressed guard sections 14 after the board has passed from the same and in rising, the said sections 14 will Dengage the opposed edges of the guard sections 15 and depress the latter to the original positions. Thus, it will be seen that the respective guard sections, 11i, 15, are free to conform individually in their movements to the movement of the board A, while the sections 15 are subject to the return movement of the guard sections 1a.
The described guard, it will be seen, prevents the hand of the operator from being injured by the knives after the board being operated upon has passed over the cutter. Also, the guard allows the shavings to blow backward, and furthermore, the construetion overcomes the necessity of the side guard which is quite an obstacle on say, a 2li-inch machine. The described arrangement of the weights is advantageousl in giving greater certainty of action than a spring device. A further advantage is that no castings are employed of a. character that would likely be broken even by rough usage.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentz 1. A guard for cutters of jointer machines and the like, including a series of separate guard sections, means to mount the said sections side by side for rately or together to and from positions over the cutter, a flexible element common to all of the said sections and having running engagement with the several sections of the series and means acting on said common flexible element and tending to move the several guard sections of the series to positions over the cutter, said means being yieldable to pressure on any of the guard sections by an advancing piece of work.
2. A cutter guard attachment for jointer machines and the like, including guard sections, means to movably mount the guard movement` sepasections on the machine, means'to maintain the guard sections in positions over the cutter to be engaged by an advancing piece of work, said means being yieldable to the pressure of the work on the sections to perw mit the depression of the latter to expose the cutter, and holding means for the sections when depressed, said last-mentioned means including a yieldable bar, means to mount the same on the jointer adjacent to the path of movement of the guard sections, said guard sections each having a member adapted to engage said bar and be yieldingly held thereby in the depressedposition.
3. The combination with a machine having a revolving cutter, of guard sections mounted on the machine adjacent to the cutter and movable to and from positions over the cutter and in the path of movement of the work to be cut, sheaves on the machine in fixed positions, sheaves on the guard sections, a flexible element running alternately over the sheaves on the machine and the sheaves on the guard sections, and means acting on the said flexible element and tending to maintain the sections in positions over the cutter.
4. A guard for the cutters of jointer machines including guard sections for the rear side of the cutter, means to movably mount the separate sections for movement to and from a position above the cutter and in the path of movement of a piece of work to be cut, whereby said sections will be depressed by the work tofexpose the cutter, a flexible element havino' runnin engagement withy b g 23 b the several guard sections, a separate series of guardsections for the front of the cutter, means to yieldingly mountY the separate front sections for movement toward and from the back sections, whereby to-follow in the rear of the piece of work passing over the cutter, aV fiexible lelement having running engagement with the said front guard sections, a weight'acting on the ilexible element of the rear guard sections, and a smaller weight acting on the flexible element of the front guard sections, the respective weights tending to move "the respective guard sections toward each other, the return movement of the rear guard sections from a depressed position serving to give a return movement to the front guard sections.
