Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Braiding and Coating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide improved mechanism for continuously producing a coated textile product such as flexible tubing for conveying gas, and it consists in combining with suitable textile mechanism for making tubular fabric cooperating means adapted to simultaneously embody with the interlacing threads a coating composition, as hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention, the novel features being specifically pointed out in the claims. Figure 1 is a plan View of a braiding machine having our invention applied thereto in preferred manner. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. '3 is a sectional elevation on the lines 3-3 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the composition cup and cooperating braiding mandrel. Fig. 5 is a separate view of the composite tubingproduced, part of it being shown in section with the tubular braiding indicated in dotted lines.
The drawings indicate a well-known type of tubular braiding machine such as is preferably employed in carrying out the invention; 1 being the top plate, 2 the bottom plate, 8 the carrier drive gears, 4; the carrier race-way in the top plate and 5Uthe yarn carriers traversing said race-way. lhe carriers are driven through the driveshaft 6 and cooperating drive gears 7, 8 and 9, in the usual manner. Above the top plate 1 a frame 10 is mountedon posts 11 and carries a receptacle 12. This receptacle is provided with an inner lining 13 spaced from the receptacle wall so as to form a heating chamber 14: for a container 15 set within the lining 13. A-heating medium, such as steam or hot water, is admitted to said chamber by a pipe 16 running to a source of supply,
andan exit pipe 17 provided for proper C11- culation of said heating means. An outlet pipe .18 communicating with the container 15, passes through the .double walls of the receptacle and is provided with a valve 19 to control the flow from said container. Centrally mounted above the top plate, upon posts 25 is .a funnel-shaped cup 26, havmg a heating jacket 27 surrounding the same with pipes 28 and 29 to supply the heating medium, and also with a bottom Opening 30 in 'alinement with the axis of the braiding machine. The rounded top edge of the cup 26 is preferably set above the tops of the yarn carriers 5, so that the braiding yarn bends over this edge as shown.
Depending into the cup 26 is a mandrel 35, adgustably supported in a bracket 36 fixed to the frame 10, the lower reduced end 37 of which mandrel extends more or less into the bottom opening 30 of the cup 26. This withspray openings 38 in the end thereof for the passage of a fluid, such as compressed air, through said mandrel. A coating composition suitable for the purpose desired, which is plastic when heated and solidifies when cooled, is placed in the jacketed receptacle 12 and a regulated flow of said coating material is supplied to the composition cup- 26 through the valved outlet pipe 18. The braiding threads or yarn are carried from the carriers 5 over the edge of the cup 26 and pass through the coating ma terial contained therein, to the outlet 30, the tubular braid thus formed being made over; the reduced end 37 of mandrel 35. The braiding point of the tubular fabric is at a point on this mandrel regulated mainly by the speed of the take-01f mechanism. This take-off mechanism, indicated at 4.0, is of any well-known construction and is located below the bed-plate 2 of the machine, preferably a considerable distance below, so as to allow time for'the coated fabrio produced to sufliciently harden. The winding reel, not shown, may be placed on the same level with the machine and to one side thereof or at any convenient point. The tubular fabric thus formed is coated inside and outside with the plastic material, the threads thereof being individually covered by the coating material in the cup 26 before beinginterwoven, and being finally embedded in a coherent mass of the covering material as indicated in Fig. 5. To insure the free slippage of the formed tube from the mandrel is preferably hollow and provided mandrel 35 spray openings 38 may be provided therein so that a compressed fluid, such as air, may be forced through the hollow mandrel stem and said spray openings to loosen the plastic material from said mandrel. The size of the opening 30 of the cup, and the reduced end 37 0f the mandrel determine the outside and inside diameters of the formed tube. The mechanism employed for interlacing the threads may be varied in construction as known in the art Without departing from the essential features of the invention.
What We claim is 1. The combination with mechanism for making tubular fabric comprising revolving thread carriers and a take-off, of a centrally located composition cup having a cylindrical bottom opening, and fixed braiding mandrel having a reduced end portion located in said bottom opening and forming a braiding-point and an annular fabric-and-composition passage Way; the braiding threads being passed through the composition cup to the braiding point and the annular passage Way being adapted to permit the passage of the tubularly braided fabric in connection with a determined coating portion of the composition.
2. The combination with mechanism for making tubular fabric comprising revolving thread carriers and a take-oil, of a centrally located composition cup having a cylindrical bottom opening, and an adjustably fixed braiding mandrel having a reduced end portion located in said bottom opening and forming a braiding-point and an annular fabric-and-composition passage Way; the braiding threads being passed through the composition cup to the braiding point and the annular passageway being adapted to permit the passage of the tubularly braided fabric in connection with a determined coating portion of the composition.
